3:4 aspect ratio, in short: a portrait shape 3 units wide for every 4 tall (0.75:1). The everyday 3:4 size is 1080×1440 pixels. Other 3:4 sizes are 768×1024, 1200×1600, 1536×2048, 2250×3000 and 3024×4032, the full size of a 12-megapixel phone photo held upright. 3:4 and 3×4 mean the same shape, and 4:3 is the same shape turned sideways.

Wrong shape? The AI image extender fills in extra background for story, ad, banner and shop sizes instead of cropping into your product.
3:4 is the shape most phone cameras already shoot in when you hold them upright, which is why it keeps turning up: Instagram's profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles, and Instagram now accepts 3:4 feed photos. This guide lists every common 3:4 size, the formula, how 3:4 compares with 4:5 and 2:3, and how to turn a square or landscape product photo into 3:4 without cutting the product off. The free aspect ratio calculator works out any 3:4 size for you.
- The ratio: width ÷ height = 0.75. Height = width × 4 ÷ 3.
- Everyday size: 1080×1440 for Instagram portrait posts and phone-shaped images.
- Phone photos: a 12 MP photo held upright is 3024×4032, already 3:4.
- Prints: 6×8, 9×12, 12×16 and 18×24 inches are all 3:4.
- 3:4 vs 4:5: 3:4 is a little taller (1080×1440 vs 1080×1350).
What are the 3:4 sizes in pixels?
Any size whose width is exactly three quarters of its height is 3:4. These are the common ones:
| 3:4 size | Megapixels | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 600×800 | 0.48 | Small web images, email |
| 768×1024 | 0.79 | Tablet-shaped images held upright |
| 1080×1440 | 1.56 | Instagram portrait posts, phone-shaped social images |
| 1200×1600 | 1.92 | Portrait product images on stores and resale apps |
| 1536×2048 | 3.15 | Sharp zoom on portrait product galleries |
| 2250×3000 | 6.75 | Large portrait product images |
| 3024×4032 | 12.2 | Full-size 12 MP phone photo, upright |
How do you calculate 3:4 dimensions?
Multiply the width by 4 and divide by 3 to get the height, or multiply the height by 0.75 to get the width. To check a size, divide width by height: 0.75 means it's 3:4.
| You have | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Height = width × 4 ÷ 3 | 1080 wide → 1440 tall |
| Height | Width = height × 3 ÷ 4 | 2000 tall → 1500 wide |
| Any size | Is width ÷ height = 0.75? | 1500×2000 = 0.75, so it's 3:4 |
If the width doesn't divide by 3 cleanly, round the height to the nearest pixel; a one-pixel difference won't be visible. For other shapes, see our aspect ratio guide.
Is 3x4 the same as 3:4?
Yes, as a shape. “3×4” is just another way of writing the 3:4 ratio, and a 3×4 inch print has the same proportions as a 1080×1440 image. The one thing to watch is units: if a form asks for a 3×4 cm photo, it means a small physical size. At 300 dpi, 3×4 cm is about 354×472 pixels (3 cm is 1.18 inches, × 300).
| Written as | Means | Pixels at 300 dpi |
|---|---|---|
| 3:4 or 3x4 (ratio) | Any portrait image 0.75 wide to 1 tall | Depends on size |
| 3×4 inch print | A small portrait print | 900×1200 |
| 6×8 inch print | The same shape, larger | 1800×2400 |
| 3×4 cm photo | A small photo on a form or card | About 354×472 |
Where is the 3:4 aspect ratio used?
Phone photos, Instagram and other places that show portrait images at phone shape.
- Phone cameras: the default photo shape on most phones is 4:3, so every upright photo is 3:4 before you crop it.
- Instagram: the profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 tile, and Instagram added 3:4 uploads for single photos and carousels in 2025, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. Square and 4:5 posts still work. See Instagram post size.
- Clothing and resale listings: some marketplaces and resale apps show apparel in portrait frames; check the current rules in Temu product image requirements and Poshmark photo tips.
- Prints: 6×8, 9×12, 12×16 and 18×24 inch prints. Our photo print sizes in pixels guide lists the rest.
- Cameras with 4:3 sensors, such as Micro Four Thirds, also give 3:4 when turned upright.
What is the difference between 3:4, 4:5 and 2:3?
All three are portrait shapes; they differ in how tall they are for the same width. At 1080 pixels wide:
| Ratio | Width ÷ height | At 1080 wide | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 1.00 | 1080×1080 | Marketplace listings, square posts |
| 4:5 | 0.80 | 1080×1350 | Instagram feed posts, feed ads |
| 3:4 | 0.75 | 1080×1440 | Phone photos, Instagram grid tiles |
| 2:3 | 0.67 | 1080×1620 | Pinterest pins, 4×6 prints |
| 9:16 | 0.56 | 1080×1920 | Stories, Reels, TikTok |
3:4 sits between 4:5 and 2:3. A 3:4 photo shown in a 4:5 frame loses a little from the top and bottom; a 4:5 post shown in a 3:4 grid tile loses a sliver from each side. Read 4:5 aspect ratio for the slightly shorter shape and 9:16 aspect ratio for full-screen vertical.
How do you turn a square photo into 3:4?
Add background above and below, or crop the sides. A 1080×1080 square becomes 1080×1440 by adding 360 px of height, or 810×1080 by cropping 135 px from each side.
| Method | Result | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Extend top and bottom | 1080×1440, nothing lost | The product fills the square edge to edge |
| Crop the sides | Loses 25% of the width | There's empty background beside the product |
| Pad with a solid color | 1080×1440 with bands | Plain white or grey backgrounds |
- Work out the target size with the aspect ratio calculator (for example 1500 wide → 2000 tall).
- If there's room beside the product, crop to that size in the free image cropper.
- If the product touches the edges, extend the background instead of cropping.
- Export a JPEG and check that nothing important sits right at the top or bottom edge.
AiArter's AI image extender generates matching background around a product photo for channel sizes such as the 4:5 Instagram post and 9:16 story. It has no 3:4 preset, so extend to 4:5 or 9:16 and crop the result to 3:4.
Extend a tight product photo so you have room to crop it to any portrait shape.
Extend a photo7 days free · 50 credits · No credit cardHow do you crop a photo to 3:4 on iPhone and Android?
On iPhone, open the photo in Photos, tap Edit, then the crop tool, open the aspect ratio menu, choose the vertical option and pick 4:3, which is 3:4 when upright. On Android, Google Photos and most gallery editors have a crop tool with ratio presets; pick 4:3 in portrait, or crop freely to the pixel size the calculator gives you. Menu names move between versions, so look for the ratio icon if you can't see the list. If your photo came straight from the camera upright, it's probably 3:4 already.
Same shape, different direction. 3:4 is portrait (1080×1440); 4:3 is landscape (1440×1080). A phone held sideways shoots 4:3; held upright, 3:4. See 4:3 aspect ratio for the landscape sizes.
Should you use 3:4 for product photos?
Shoot in 3:4 or 4:3 at full resolution, then crop for each channel. Most marketplaces show square tiles, so a 3:4 photo needs margin above and below the product to survive a square crop. Use 3:4 as the final shape when the place you post shows portrait frames, such as the Instagram grid or apparel listings, and keep every image of a product the same shape so a gallery doesn't jump.
For square listing images, see 1:1 aspect ratio and how to make an image square. Every guide on sizes and editing is collected in our photo editing how-tos.
