Photo Print Sizes in Pixels (2026): 4x6 to 24x36 and A4 at 300 and 150 PPI

Photo print sizes in pixels, in short: multiply each side in inches by 300 for a sharp print. A 4×6 needs 1200×1800 px, 5×7 needs 1500×2100, 8×10 needs 2400×3000, 11×14 needs 3300×4200 and A4 needs 2480×3508. At 150 PPI, fine for posters seen from a distance, you need half of each number.

Print labs sell sizes in inches or millimeters, but your photo is measured in pixels, and each print size has its own picture ratio. This reference gives every standard size from wallet to 24×36 and A6 to A3 in pixels at 300 and 150 PPI, the aspect ratio of each, and how much of a phone or camera photo you lose when you crop to fit. To set the PPI value a print shop asks for without touching a pixel, use the free DPI changer.

The short version
  • The formula: pixels = inches × PPI. For metric sizes, pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × PPI.
  • 300 PPI for prints viewed up close; 150 PPI is acceptable for large posters viewed from a meter or more.
  • Each size has a ratio: 4×6 is 2:3, 8×10 is 4:5, 18×24 is 3:4 and A sizes are 1:1.414.
  • Phone photos are 4:3, camera photos 3:2. Only matching print ratios print without cropping.
  • Short on pixels? Changing the DPI number doesn't add detail; upscaling does.

What are the standard photo print sizes in pixels?

Here is every common print size with the pixels needed at 300 PPI (sharp up close) and 150 PPI (the lower limit for posters seen from a distance), plus the picture ratio of each.

Wallet prints vary by lab; 2.5×3.5 is the most common, and some labs use 2×3 (600×900 at 300 PPI). The sizes are written short side first; turn the numbers around for a landscape print.

What are A4, A5, A6 and A3 in pixels?

A-series paper is measured in millimeters, so convert with pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × PPI. Every A size has the same 1:1.414 ratio (1 to the square root of 2), which is why folding an A4 in half makes an A5.

Print sizes and the ISO 216 A-series paper dimensions were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

A6 is close to a 4×6 postcard but not the same shape, and A4 is narrower and taller than US Letter. If you sell printables to buyers in both regions, export the same design at both ratios rather than letting the printer shrink one to fit.

What picture ratio does my photo have?

Most phone photos are 4:3 (3024×4032 for a 12 MP photo held upright) and most DSLR and mirrorless photos are 3:2 (6000×4000 for 24 MP). The “picture ratio” of a print is its width divided by its height, and when the two ratios don't match, something gets cropped or you get white borders. The free aspect ratio calculator reads a photo's size and names its ratio.

The percentage is how much of the photo falls outside the print. Camera photos fit the 2:3 sizes perfectly and lose the most at 8×10; phone photos fit 18×24 perfectly and lose little at 8×10 and A4. That's why the same picture can look fine as a 4×6 and cut off as an 8×10: the 4:5 shape is much squarer than 3:2.

Crop it yourself before you order

If you leave cropping to the lab, it trims from the center, which can cut off a head or the edge of a painting. Crop to the print's ratio first and decide what goes. The free image cropper locks to 2:3 and 4:5 (and 1:1, 3:2, 5:4); for 5:7 or 11:14 use its free crop and match the pixel numbers from the tables above.

How do I crop a photo to a print size?

  1. Find the print's ratio in the table, for example 4:5 for 8×10.
  2. Open the photo in the image cropper and lock it to 4:5 (turn it to 5:4 for a landscape print).
  3. Drag the box so nothing important touches the edge. Leave a few millimeters of margin; labs trim slightly when they cut.
  4. Check the output size: for a sharp 8×10 it should be at least 2400×3000 pixels.
  5. Export, then set the file to 300 DPI in the DPI changer if the lab asks for it. The pixels don't change; only the print-size label does.

How big can I print my photo?

Divide the pixels by the PPI. A 4032×3024 phone photo gives 13.4×10 inches at 300 PPI, so it covers an 8×10 or an A4 comfortably and an 11×14 at about 275 PPI. At 150 PPI the same photo stretches to about 27×20 inches for a poster.

How sharp is sharp enough depends on viewing distance; what DPI for printing breaks that down by print type. If the photo falls short, typing a bigger DPI number won't help. The fix is more pixels.

Upscaling works best one or two print sizes up, say a 4×6-sized file printed at 8×10. It can't rescue a blurred or badly focused photo. Our guide on how to change image DPI explains when a DPI change is enough and when you need to upscale.

What resolution should I send to a print lab?

  • Pixels: at least the 300 PPI numbers above for anything held in the hand; 150–200 PPI for large posters.
  • Shape: cropped to the print's ratio, so the lab doesn't decide what to cut.
  • Format: a high-quality JPG is standard; use TIFF or PNG only if the lab asks.
  • Color: sRGB unless the lab gives you a profile to use.
  • DPI tag: set to 300 if requested; it's a label and costs nothing in quality.

Always follow your lab's own file guidelines if they differ; they know their printers.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 4x6 photo?

1200×1800 pixels at 300 PPI, or 600×900 at 150 PPI. The ratio is 2:3, the same as most camera photos.

What is 8x10 in pixels?

2400×3000 pixels at 300 PPI, or 1200×1500 at 150 PPI. Its ratio is 4:5.

What is 5x7 in pixels?

1500×2100 pixels at 300 PPI and 750×1050 at 150 PPI, a 5:7 ratio.

What is A4 size in pixels?

2480×3508 pixels at 300 PPI and 1240×1754 at 150 PPI. A4 is 210×297 mm.

What is 11x14 in pixels?

3300×4200 pixels at 300 PPI and 1650×2100 at 150 PPI.

What picture ratio is 8x10?

4:5. It's squarer than a 3:2 camera photo, so about 17% of the photo's length is cropped away.

Can I print a phone photo at 16x20?

A 12 MP photo gives about 190 PPI at 16×20, which looks fine on a wall at a normal distance. For close viewing, upscale it first.

Does changing DPI make a bigger print possible?

No. It only changes how large the print is labeled. A bigger sharp print needs more pixels.
