16:9 aspect ratio, in short: a widescreen shape 16 units wide for every 9 tall (1.78:1). The standard 16:9 pixel sizes are 1280×720 (720p), 1920×1080 (1080p), 2560×1440 (1440p), 3840×2160 (4K) and 7680×4320 (8K). Smaller 16:9 sizes include 640×360 and 1600×900. Sellers use it for YouTube, website heroes, store banners and slides.

16:9 is the shape of every TV, most monitors and most video, so sooner or later a seller who mostly shoots square product photos needs one. This guide lists every common 16:9 resolution, shows where sellers actually need the shape, and explains how to turn a square or portrait product photo into a 16:9 image without stretching it. For any odd size, the free aspect ratio calculator tells you whether it's really 16:9 and fills in the missing side.
- The ratio: width ÷ height = 1.78. Height = width × 9 ÷ 16.
- Everyday sizes: 1280×720 (thumbnails), 1920×1080 (video, website heroes), 2560×1440 (YouTube banners).
- High resolution: 3840×2160 is 4K UHD; 7680×4320 is 8K.
- Not 16:9: link preview images (1.91:1) and laptop screens (16:10) are close but different.
- From a square photo: extend the background with AI or place the product on a designed canvas. Never stretch it.
What are the 16:9 resolutions in pixels?
Every 16:9 resolution keeps width and height in a 16-to-9 proportion. The named ones below come from video and display standards; the small ones are handy for previews and web images.
| 16:9 size | Common name | Megapixels | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 640×360 | 360p / nHD | 0.23 | Small previews, email images; YouTube thumbnail minimum width is 640 |
| 854×480 | 480p | 0.41 | Low-bandwidth video |
| 1280×720 | 720p / HD | 0.92 | YouTube thumbnails, light web banners |
| 1600×900 | HD+ | 1.44 | Blog and website images, mid-size banners |
| 1920×1080 | 1080p / Full HD | 2.07 | Video, website hero banners, Amazon video, slides |
| 2560×1440 | 1440p / QHD | 3.69 | YouTube channel banners, sharp heroes on large screens |
| 3840×2160 | 4K UHD | 8.29 | 4K video, YouTube's TV-sharp recommendation |
| 7680×4320 | 8K UHD | 33.18 | 8K video; rarely needed for seller images |
Each step up the table doubles or more the pixel count. 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p, and 8K four times the pixels of 4K. For still images on a website, anything past 2560 wide mostly adds file weight: a 3840×2160 hero shown in a 1440 px wide browser window is shrunk before anyone sees it.
Divide width by height. 1.78 is 16:9. 1.60 is 16:10 (1920×1200, many laptops), 1.91 is a link-preview image (1200×628), and 2.37 is “21:9” ultra-wide (2560×1080). 1366×768 works out to 1.779, close enough to call 16:9.
Where do sellers need 16:9 images?
Sellers need 16:9 for video and anything shown full-width on a screen. Here are the places it comes up, with the sizes from our platform guides:
| Placement | 16:9 size to use | Rule to know |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube video | 1920×1080, or 3840×2160 | 16:9 is YouTube's standard player shape |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280×720 | Minimum width 640 px; 16:9 |
| YouTube channel banner | 2560×1440 | Minimum 2048×1152; 6 MB max; small central safe area |
| Website hero banner | 1920×1080, up to 2560 wide | Aim for under 300 KB |
| Shopify slideshow or image banner | 2880×1620 | Under 20 MB and 20 megapixels; 3000×1200 (5:2) is the wider option |
| Amazon product video | 1920×1080 | MP4 or MOV, 16:9 preferred, under 5 GB |
| Presentation slides | 1920×1080 | The default slide shape in PowerPoint and Google Slides |
YouTube, Shopify, website and Amazon video sizes, taken from our researched platform guides, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Details for each are in the YouTube banner size, YouTube thumbnail size, Shopify banner size, Kickstarter image size and website image sizes guides. One trap: link previews on Facebook, X and LinkedIn use 1.91:1 at 1200×628, not 16:9. A 16:9 image still works there but loses a thin strip at the top and bottom.
The YouTube banner is the odd case. It's a 16:9 file, but on phones and laptops only a thin strip through the middle shows, about 1546×423 on a 2560×1440 banner. So treat it as a wide strip with extra background, not as a normal 16:9 picture.
How do I calculate 16:9 dimensions?
Multiply the width by 9 and divide by 16 to get the height; multiply the height by 16 and divide by 9 to get the width. For a 1440 px wide image, 1440 × 9 ÷ 16 = 810, so the size is 1440×810.
| Width | 16:9 height | Height | 16:9 width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 800 | 450 | 500 | 889 |
| 1000 | 563 | 720 | 1280 |
| 1200 | 675 | 900 | 1600 |
| 1440 | 810 | 1080 | 1920 |
| 2000 | 1125 | 1440 | 2560 |
| 2880 | 1620 | 2160 | 3840 |
Round to the nearest whole pixel. If you're cropping an existing photo, the free image cropper locks the box to 16:9 and shows the output size as you drag.
How do I turn a square product photo into 16:9?
Extend the background or build a wide layout around the product; don't crop or stretch. A 16:9 frame is 78% wider than a square of the same height, so a 2000×2000 photo needs about 3556 px of width to become 16:9 at full height. That space has to come from somewhere.
| Method | What you get | Good for | Problem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop the square to 16:9 | Keeps 56% of the height | Wide shots with lots of headroom | Cuts the top and bottom of most products |
| Stretch to 16:9 | A distorted product | Nothing | Buyers spot a squashed bottle at once |
| Pad with a color | Product in the middle, plain sides | Simple banners with text beside the product | Looks unfinished without a layout |
| Design a layout | Product cut-out plus text on a wide canvas | Store banners, thumbnails | Takes design time |
| AI extend | The scene continued left and right | Lifestyle photos, heroes, YouTube art | Check the new area for odd details |
AI extending is the fastest way to keep a photo looking like a photo. AiArter's AI image extender has a website banner preset at 1920×1080 (16:9). It keeps your original photo untouched in the middle and generates new background around it, for 8 credits per size.
- Pick a photo with some background around the product; a tight cut-out on white extends less naturally.
- Open the AI image extender and upload it (JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 15 MB).
- Choose the 1920×1080 banner size.
- Check the new left and right areas for repeated patterns or stray objects, and leave room for any text you'll add.
- Download. For a 2560×1440 YouTube banner, upscale the result and resize it to 2560 wide.

How do I make a portrait photo 16:9?
A portrait (3:4 or 9:16) photo is the hardest to convert, because the product is tall and the frame is short. You have two realistic choices: extend it with AI so the product sits in a much wider scene, or use it as one panel of a layout, for example the product photo on the right third and text on the left. Cropping a 3:4 phone photo to 16:9 keeps only about 42% of its height, which almost always cuts the product.
- Shoot for it next time: turn the phone sideways and leave plenty of space either side of the product. A 4:3 landscape photo crops to 16:9 losing only a quarter of its height.
- Too small after cropping? AI upscaling enlarges 4× for 3 credits, so a 960×540 crop becomes 3840×2160.
- File too heavy for a website hero? The free image compressor brings it under 300 KB in the browser.
Is 16:9 the same as 1920x1080?
No. 16:9 is a shape and 1920×1080 is one size with that shape. 1280×720, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 are all 16:9 too. The ratio tells you whether the image will be cropped; the pixel size tells you whether it will look sharp. Our aspect ratio guide explains the difference for every common ratio, and the 1:1 aspect ratio guide covers the square sizes you'll use alongside 16:9.
Its vertical twin is 9:16 (1080×1920), used by Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts. If a video comes out sideways or squashed, the two numbers were swapped.
