JFIF, in short: a .jfif file is an ordinary JPEG image with a different file extension. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format, the standard way JPEG data is stored, so the picture inside is identical to a .jpg. Windows and Chrome sometimes save web images as .jfif, and upload forms that only look for .jpg or .jpeg then reject them. Renaming or converting fixes it.

For sellers this usually shows up at the worst moment: you save a supplier photo or your own image from a browser, go to list it, and the marketplace greys the file out. The quick fix is our free JFIF to JPG converter, which runs in your browser. This guide explains what JFIF actually is, why your computer keeps making these files, which marketplaces say they accept them, and when renaming is enough.
- Same image data: a .jfif file is a JPEG; only the extension is unusual.
- Why it happens: Windows maps the JPEG type to .jfif on some PCs, so Chrome and Edge save web images that way.
- Marketplaces: none of the help pages we checked list .jfif by name; they say JPEG or .jpg, so a .jpg file is the safe route.
- Quick fix: rename .jfif to .jpg, or convert it to a fresh JPG with the JFIF to JPG converter.
- No quality loss from renaming; converting at quality 92 or higher looks the same.
What is a JFIF file?
A JFIF file is a JPEG image saved with the .jfif extension. JFIF, the JPEG File Interchange Format, is the format that defines how compressed JPEG data is packed into a file so any program can open it. It's been around since the early 1990s and was later standardized as ITU-T T.871.
Here's the part that confuses people: most .jpg files on the web are already JFIF files inside. Open one in a hex viewer and you'll see the letters “JFIF” near the start. Photos straight from a camera or phone usually use a sibling layout called Exif, which adds camera details and location. Either way the image data is JPEG, and the extension is just a label.
| Extension | What's inside | Opens in |
|---|---|---|
| .jpg / .jpeg | JPEG data, usually JFIF or Exif layout | Everything |
| .jfif | JPEG data, JFIF layout | Most image viewers and editors; some upload forms refuse it |
| .jpe / .jif | JPEG data with rare older extensions | Most viewers; many forms refuse it |
| .webp | A different format (Google's WebP) | Browsers and newer apps; see WebP to JPG |
| .heic | A different format (Apple's HEIF) | Apple devices, newer apps; convert with the HEIC to JPG tool |
So a .jfif file isn't low quality, unsafe or a special kind of image. It's only a problem when a website or app checks the extension and doesn't recognise it.
Why does my computer save images as JFIF?
Because Windows tells the browser that JPEG images should use the .jfif extension. When you choose “Save image as” in Chrome or Edge on Windows, the browser asks the system which extension belongs to the image/jpeg file type. On many PCs a setting in the Windows registry answers .jfif instead of .jpg, often after some software changed it.
- Browsers: Chrome and Edge on Windows are where most .jfif files come from. Saving the same image on a Mac or phone usually gives a .jpg.
- Copy and paste: some apps save pasted images as .jfif for the same reason.
- It's not the website. The site sent an ordinary JPEG; the name was chosen on your computer.
As an aside, the permanent fix on Windows is a change to that registry value so JPEGs default to .jpg again. It works, but editing the registry can break things if you get it wrong, so most people are better off renaming or converting files as they come. If a web image comes down as .webp rather than .jfif, that's a different format; see how to convert WebP to JPG.
Do eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Shopify, Vinted and Poshmark accept JFIF?
None of their help pages lists .jfif by name. eBay, Amazon and Shopify list JPEG; Etsy lists JPG; Vinted and Poshmark don't publish a format list. Because the data is JPEG, a site may accept the file anyway, but uploading a .jpg is the only route their rules clearly cover.
| Platform | Formats its help page lists | JFIF mentioned? | Safe route |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay | JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC, AVIF | No | Rename or convert to .jpg |
| Etsy | JPG, PNG, GIF | No | Rename or convert to .jpg |
| Amazon | JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF (.tif), PNG, non-animated GIF; JPEG preferred | No | Convert to .jpg (the listed extensions don't include .jfif) |
| Shopify | JPEG, progressive JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC, WebP | No | Rename or convert to .jpg |
| Vinted | No format list published in its help centre | No | Upload .jpg from your phone or computer |
| Poshmark | No format list published in its help pages | No | Upload .jpg from your phone |
eBay's “Adding pictures to your listings”, Amazon's “Technical image file requirements” and Shopify's theme images help pages, plus the Etsy, Vinted and Poshmark help centres, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Amazon is the one to be strictest about: its requirements page names the extensions it accepts, and .jfif isn't one of them. For eBay's full photo rules (size, borders, text), see eBay photo requirements, and for which format suits which channel, JPG vs PNG vs WebP for product images.
How do I convert JFIF to JPG?
Either rename the file to .jpg or save a fresh JPG copy. Renaming is instant and lossless; converting also lets you shrink the file and handles many files at once.
Option 1: convert with a free tool
- Open the JFIF to JPG converter. Free, no sign-up.
- Drop in one or many .jfif files.
- Keep the default quality of 92 (raise it to 100 for the closest match, or lower it for smaller files).
- Download each .jpg or all of them as a ZIP.
The conversion happens in your browser, so supplier photos and personal images never leave your device. If a marketplace also has a file-size limit, the free image compressor can cap the size at the same time.
Option 2: rename the extension
- Windows 11: in File Explorer choose View > Show > File name extensions, then rename
photo.jfiftophoto.jpgand confirm the warning. - Windows 10: tick File name extensions on the View tab, then rename the same way.
- Mac: select the file, press Return, change the ending to .jpg and choose Use .jpg.
- Paint or Photos on Windows: open the file and use Save as JPEG for a converted copy.
Renaming works because the data inside is already JPEG. It won't help if a file was mislabelled in the first place, for example a WebP saved with a .jfif name; if a renamed file won't open, convert it instead.

Renaming loses nothing, because the file isn't changed. Converting re-saves the JPEG, which compresses it once more; at quality 92 or higher the difference isn't visible, and at 100 it's as close as JPEG gets.
Saving a fresh copy in the browser drops hidden metadata. That's useful for supplier or downloaded images, which can carry someone else's camera or editing details. If you only want to strip metadata from your own photos, the free remove photo metadata tool does just that.
Images saved from websites can also arrive as WebP or AVIF, newer formats that many upload forms reject; see what is an AVIF file.
How do I stop images saving as JFIF?
The simplest habits avoid the problem without touching system settings:
- Type the extension yourself. In the Save dialog, change the name to
product.jpgand choose “All files” as the type if it's offered. - Use the original file. Ask suppliers for the original images rather than saving them from a web page, which also gets you a larger, sharper file.
- Convert in batches. Keep a folder for downloads and run everything through the converter before listing.
- Save on another device. Saving the same image on a Mac or phone usually gives a .jpg.
Saving images you don't own from other sites can also break a marketplace's image rules, quite apart from the file type. Use supplier images you have permission for, or your own photos.
Frequently asked questions
What is a JFIF file?
A JPEG image with the .jfif extension. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format, the standard way JPEG data is stored, so the image is the same as a .jpg.
Is JFIF the same as JPG?
The image data is the same; only the extension differs. Most .jpg files from the web are JFIF inside. Some upload forms check the extension, so they accept .jpg and refuse .jfif.
Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?
Usually yes. Show file extensions, change .jfif to .jpg and confirm. Nothing about the image changes. If the renamed file won't open, it wasn't really JPEG, so convert it instead.
Why does Chrome save images as JFIF?
On Windows, Chrome asks the system which extension belongs to JPEG images, and on many PCs a registry setting answers .jfif. The website sent a normal JPEG.
Does eBay accept JFIF files?
eBay's help page lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF, and doesn't mention .jfif. Rename or convert to .jpg to be safe.
Does Amazon accept JFIF?
Amazon's image requirements list JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF, and prefer JPEG. .jfif isn't listed, so convert to .jpg before uploading.
Is a JFIF file safe to open?
A .jfif file is a normal image format. As with any download, only open files from sources you trust, and check that the file really is an image and not something renamed to look like one.
How do I convert JFIF to JPG on iPhone or Android?
Open a browser-based JFIF to JPG converter, pick the file and download the .jpg. It runs on the phone, so nothing is uploaded.
