1:1 Aspect Ratio (2026): Square Pixel Sizes for Every Platform

1:1 aspect ratio, in short: a square, where the width equals the height. The most used 1:1 sizes are 1080×1080 px for Instagram and Facebook, 2000×2000 px for Amazon, Etsy and most marketplaces, 1600×1600 px for eBay and 2048×2048 px for Shopify. Any matching pair, from 500×500 to 3000×3000, is still 1:1; only the sharpness changes.

More on this topic: Photo editing how-tos, every guide in one place.

Square is the shape most product grids are built around, so it's the one sellers need most often. This page goes deeper than our general aspect ratio chart: it lists the 1:1 size each platform expects, compares the common square pixel sizes from 500 to 3000, and shows how to square up a tall or wide photo without slicing off the product. If you just want a square file now, the free square image maker pads or crops any photo in your browser.

The short version
  • What 1:1 means: one unit wide for every one unit tall. 1080×1080 and 2000×2000 have the same shape.
  • Marketplace default: 2000×2000 px covers Amazon zoom, Etsy and TikTok Shop; Shopify recommends 2048×2048.
  • Social default: 1080×1080 px for Instagram and Facebook square posts.
  • Profile pictures: square uploads of 320–800 px, shown as circles, so keep the logo centered.
  • Getting there: pad (white, color or blur) to keep the whole photo; crop only when there's room around the product.

What is a 1:1 aspect ratio?

A 1:1 aspect ratio means the image is exactly as wide as it is tall. Both numbers in the ratio are the same, so the decimal (width ÷ height) is 1.00. A 500×500 thumbnail and a 3000×3000 print file are both 1:1; the bigger one simply holds more detail. You'll see 1:1 written as “1 1 aspect ratio”, “1x1”, “square” or “1:1 ratio”; they all mean the same shape.

To check whether an image is square, compare the two pixel numbers. If they differ, it isn't 1:1, and a platform that displays squares will crop or pad it. The free aspect ratio calculator reads a photo's size and tells you its ratio and the nearest standard one.

What size is a 1:1 image on each platform?

Each platform names its own square size. These are the numbers from our researched platform guides:

Platform square sizes, taken from our Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, eBay, TikTok Shop, Instagram and Facebook guides, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Two of these need care. Etsy crops the first photo to a landscape thumbnail in search, so a square with the product hugging the top or bottom edge loses it there; see the Etsy listing photo size guide. And Instagram square posts still work, but since 2025 the profile grid shows 3:4 tiles, which trim the left and right of a square slightly. The Instagram post size guide covers that change.

What size should a square profile picture be?

Profile pictures are 1:1 uploads that display as circles, so the corners never show. Upload a larger square than the display size and keep your logo or face in the middle with some margin.

A quick test: draw the largest circle that fits in your square. Anything outside it, including text in the corners, will be hidden.

What are the common 1:1 sizes in pixels?

The common 1:1 pixel sizes are 500, 800, 1080, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2048 and 3000 pixels square. Pick by where the image goes: small squares for icons and email, 1080 for social, 1600–2048 for store zoom, and 3000 when you also want to print.

Bigger isn't automatically better online. A 3000×3000 product photo is about 2.25 times the pixels of a 2000×2000 one, so it's a heavier file that most store pages shrink anyway. Use 2000 or 2048 for listings unless a platform asks for more. If you're curious how pixels map to print, photo print sizes in pixels has the full table.

How do I make a 1:1 image without cutting off the product?

Pad it instead of cropping it. Padding places the whole photo on a square canvas and fills the empty sides, so the product keeps its full height and nothing is stretched. Cropping only works when there's spare background around the product.

Your photoBest way to square itWhy
Product on white, tall (3:4, 4:5)Pad with whiteSeamless; marketplaces expect white
Product on white, wide (4:3, 16:9)Pad with white top and bottomKeeps the full width
Lifestyle photo with room around itCrop to 1:1Plenty of background to spare
Lifestyle photo, product fills the frameAI extend or blurred padCropping would cut the product
Social post, any backgroundBlurred padLooks intentional, no plain bars

Here's the padding route in the free square image maker:

  1. Open the square image maker and add your photo. It stays on your device.
  2. Choose a fill: white for marketplaces, your brand color, or a blurred copy of the photo for social.
  3. Or choose crop and slide the frame to keep the part you want.
  4. Pick the output size: 1080, 1600, 2000 or 2048 px square.
  5. Download the JPG and check that the product has a small margin on every side.

Want to crop by hand? The free image cropper locks the box to 1:1 and shows the output size in pixels as you drag. For a step-by-step on iPhone, Android and desktop, see how to make an image square.

The crop math for phone photos

An upright phone photo is 3:4. Cropping it to 1:1 removes a quarter of its height (3024×4032 becomes 3024×3024). A 9:16 screenshot loses 44%. If your product runs close to the top or bottom of the frame, that crop will cut it, so pad instead.

When should I use AI to extend a photo to square?

Use AI extending when the photo has a real scene, such as a kitchen counter or a shelf, and white or blurred bars would look like a mistake. An extender generates more of the same background into the empty space, so the square looks like it was shot that way. AiArter's AI image extender includes a Shopify 2048×2048 square preset, keeps your original photo untouched in the middle, and costs 8 credits per size.

Turn a tall lifestyle photo into a 2048×2048 square, with AI continuing the scene instead of adding bars.

If the square comes out too small for zoom (say a 900×900 crop from an old photo), AI upscaling enlarges it 4× for 3 credits, which takes 900 px to 3600 px; then size it down to 2000. For exact non-AI resizing to a marketplace preset, the free marketplace image resizer does it in the browser.

Is 1:1 the best aspect ratio for product photos?

For store and marketplace listings, yes: 1:1 is the safest default. Search grids, collection pages and zoom viewers are built around squares, and mixing shapes makes a grid look ragged. For social feeds, 1:1 works but taller shapes win screen space:

  • Listings (Amazon, Shopify, eBay, TikTok Shop): 1:1 at 2000–2048 px.
  • Etsy: 1:1 or 5:4 at 2,000 px or more, product centered for the cropped thumbnail.
  • Instagram and Facebook feed: 4:5 or 3:4 get more attention; 1:1 for carousels and catalogs.
  • Stories, Reels, TikTok: 9:16. A square here leaves big empty bands.
  • Banners and YouTube: 16:9; see the 16:9 aspect ratio guide.

The practical approach: shoot loose at your phone's default 3:4, then make a square master for listings and other shapes from the same photo.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 1:1 aspect ratio?

A square image: the width and height are equal. 1080×1080, 2000×2000 and 3000×3000 are all 1:1.

What size is a 1:1 image in pixels?

Any equal pair. The common ones are 1080×1080 for social posts, 1600×1600 for eBay, 2000×2000 for Amazon, Etsy and TikTok Shop, and 2048×2048 for Shopify.

What is the 1:1 aspect ratio size for Instagram?

1080×1080 pixels. Instagram also accepts 4:5 (1080×1350) and 3:4 (1080×1440), which fill more of the screen.

Is 1080x1080 a 1:1 ratio?

Yes. Both sides are 1080 pixels, so the ratio is 1:1. It's the standard square size for Instagram and Facebook.

Is 1x1 the same as 1:1?

Yes. “1x1”, “1 1 aspect ratio” and “1:1” all mean a square image.

What is the best 1:1 size for product photos?

2000×2000 pixels suits most marketplaces and gives Amazon's zoom room to work. Use 2048×2048 for Shopify.

How do I make a photo 1:1 without cropping?

Pad it onto a square canvas with white, a color or a blurred copy of the photo. The free square image maker does this in your browser, or an AI extender can generate matching background.

Does a 1:1 image look smaller on Instagram?

A little. A 1080×1080 square is shorter on screen than a 1080×1350 portrait post, and the 3:4 profile grid trims its sides slightly.
