Etsy Listing Photo Size (2026): Thumbnail Cropping, Requirements and the Photos That Sell

On Etsy, your first photo does most of the selling. It's the image shoppers see in search, in category pages and in ads, and it's shown as a cropped thumbnail long before anyone opens the listing. If the crop cuts off the top of your mug or the edge of your print, the listing looks careless at exactly the moment a buyer is deciding whether to click.

This guide covers the Etsy listing photo size to aim for in 2026, how thumbnail cropping works and how to plan around it, the photo set that sells handmade and vintage items, and how to keep a whole shop looking consistent.

The short version
  • Size: Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side. A 2000×2000 square or a 2500×2000 (5:4) image gives a sharp zoom and crops well.
  • Thumbnails are cropped. Your first photo appears as a landscape thumbnail in search (roughly 4:3). Keep the product centered with margin, and use Etsy's thumbnail adjust tool.
  • Photo count: Etsy now allows up to 20 photos (previously 10) plus a video. Check your listing form for the current limit.
  • File size: keep uploads around 1 MB or less; they upload most reliably.
  • Lifestyle matters more on Etsy than on Amazon. Buyers want to see the item in a real setting and feel the maker behind it.

Etsy listing photo size: the numbers

Etsy is less rigid than Amazon. There's no required background and no fixed aspect ratio. There are a few numbers worth knowing, though, because they decide how sharp and how well framed your photos look:

ItemEtsy guidanceWhat to aim for
Recommended sizeAt least 2,000 px on the shortest side2000×2000 px (1:1) or 2500×2000 px (5:4)
First-photo minimumAbout 635 px wideNever this small; it will look soft
Search thumbnailCropped to a landscape shape, roughly 4:3Product centered with margin on every side
Aspect ratioAny; landscape or square display best5:4 or 4:3 landscape, or square
Photos per listingUp to 20 (previously 10)At least 5–10 strong photos
Video1 per listing5–15 seconds, no sound needed
File sizeSmaller files upload more reliablyAround 1 MB per image
File formatJPG, PNG, GIFJPG for photos

Etsy's photo size, thumbnail and photo-count guidance were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Sources disagree on some details, especially the exact photo limit, because Etsy rolled changes out gradually. What doesn't change: big, sharp images with the product safely in the middle of the frame survive every crop. To get a photo to that shape quickly, the free Etsy image resizer outputs a 5:4 listing photo in your browser, padding or cropping as you choose, with nothing uploaded.

Why the shortest side matters

Etsy measures the shortest side because it crops and resizes images for different places. A 3000×1200 panorama has plenty of pixels in width but only 1,200 in height, so it zooms poorly and crops badly. A 2500×2000 image keeps enough resolution in both directions for zoom on large screens and for the thumbnail crop.

How Etsy thumbnail cropping works

Your first photo is shown in several shapes depending on where it appears: a landscape thumbnail in search results, a square-ish crop in some app views and in the shop grid, and the full image on the listing page. You can't control every crop, so plan for the tightest one.

  1. Center the product. Most crops trim from the edges inward, so the center is safe.
  2. Leave margin on every side. About 10–15% empty space around the product means a landscape or square crop won't touch it.
  3. Avoid text near the edges. If you add a small label or text overlay, keep it in the middle of the frame.
  4. Use the thumbnail adjust tool. When you upload the first photo, Etsy lets you drag and zoom the thumbnail crop. Use it on every listing, especially for tall products.
  5. Preview on a phone. Most Etsy traffic is mobile. Open your shop in the app and look at the search thumbnails at their real size.
Tall products need extra care

Bottles, vases, plant stands and framed prints are the products most often cut off by a landscape crop. Shoot them with extra space above and below, or place them in a wider scene so the landscape thumbnail still shows the whole item.

The photo set that sells on Etsy

Etsy buyers are often shopping for something personal: a gift, a piece for their home, something made by hand. They want to know what the item is like to own, who made it and whether it's worth the price over a mass-produced alternative. Photos carry most of that. A strong set for most handmade and vintage listings:

#PhotoWhy it matters on Etsy
1Hero shot, styled or cleanWins the click in search. Clean or lightly styled, product centered.
2Lifestyle in a real settingShows the piece in a home, on a person or in use.
3Close-up of texture or craftProves it's handmade: glaze, grain, stitching, brush marks.
4Scale referenceAnswers "how big is it?", the top reason for disappointed buyers.
5VariationsColors, sizes or personalization options side by side.
6Back, inside or undersideShows the parts buyers can't see in the hero shot.
7Packaging or gift-ready shotImportant for gift buyers.
8Process or maker shotHands at work, the studio, raw materials. Builds trust.
9Flaws or wear (vintage)Honest close-ups of marks or patina prevent returns.
10VideoA short clip of the item being turned, worn or used.

You don't need all twenty slots. Ten good photos beat twenty repetitive ones. But listings with only one or two photos give buyers too little to go on.

Clean or styled first photo?

Unlike Amazon, Etsy doesn't require a white background for the first photo. Many successful shops use a lightly styled hero: the product on a neutral surface with soft daylight and one or two props that don't compete. Clean white backgrounds work well for jewelry, small accessories and anything where detail matters most. Whichever you choose, use it consistently across the shop.

Lifestyle photos matter more on Etsy

On Amazon, the main image is functional and the lifestyle shots support it. On Etsy, the lifestyle photo often is the reason someone buys. A ceramic mug on a white background is a mug. The same mug on a wooden table next to a book, with morning light, is a slow Sunday. Buyers on Etsy respond to that.

Good lifestyle shots for Etsy:

  • Match the scene to the buyer. A minimalist print belongs in a bright, simple room; a rustic candle belongs on wood with warm light.
  • Keep scale believable. Small items on huge tables look strange. Pick settings where the size makes sense.
  • Don't let props steal the shot. If a buyer can't tell which item is for sale, simplify.
  • Show it worn or used for jewelry, clothing and bags. A hand, a wrist or a shoulder gives instant scale.
  • Stay honest. The scene can be styled, but the product must look exactly as it will arrive. Etsy buyers leave detailed reviews.

Keep your shop consistent

Shoppers who land on one listing often click through to your shop. A grid where every first photo uses different light, backgrounds and framing looks like a jumble of items rather than a brand. A few habits fix that:

  • Pick one aspect ratio for every first photo, for example 5:4 landscape, so the shop grid lines up.
  • Use the same background family: all white, all the same wood, or all one brand color.
  • Keep the product at a similar size in each frame.
  • Shoot at the same time of day or with the same lighting so color temperature matches.
  • Process photos in batches with the same settings instead of one at a time.

A simple Etsy photo workflow

  1. Shoot each product near a window with soft daylight, on a plain surface, with space around it. Our guide to taking product photos with your phone covers the setup.
  2. Take the angles you need: front, back, detail, scale and any variations.
  3. Clean up or replace backgrounds so every hero shot matches the rest of the shop.
  4. Create one or two lifestyle scenes per product.
  5. Export the first photo at 2000×2000 or larger, with the product centered. A free marketplace image resizer can pad or crop it to that exact size.
  6. Compress files to around 1 MB without visible quality loss; our free image compressor lets you cap the file size for a whole batch.
  7. Upload, then use the thumbnail adjust tool and check the result on your phone.

Making Etsy photos with AiArter

AiArter keeps your product as you photographed it and only changes what's around it, which matters for handmade work where the details are the point.

  • Etsy size (8 credits). Resize any image to exactly 2000×1600 (5:4). If the original is square or tall, AI fills the extra space so nothing is stretched, and the product stays centered for the thumbnail. That gives a sharp zoom, though its 1,600 px short side is under Etsy's 2,000 px recommendation; if you want to meet it exactly, use the 2000×2000 white-background or color-background output instead.
  • Lifestyle scenes (8 credits). Choose from ten presets including Wooden table, Marble counter, Living room, Pastel color and Holiday, or describe your own setting. The product is cut out of your photo and kept as it is.
  • Clean backgrounds (4 credits) in pure white, a brand color or a gradient with a soft shadow. Save your colors in a brand kit and they appear as one-click swatches, which keeps the shop consistent.
  • Upscale (3 credits) a sharp close-up that's a little small with the AI image upscaler.
  • Whole collections at once. The bulk background remover processes up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download.
  • Video. Animate a still photo into a 5-second clip for the listing video slot.

Selling on Amazon too? The rules there are much stricter; see Amazon product image requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side. 2000×2000 (square) or 2500×2000 (5:4) works well, gives a sharp zoom and leaves room for the thumbnail crop.

What is the Etsy thumbnail size?

The first photo is cropped to a landscape thumbnail in search, close to a 4:3 shape, and to other shapes in the app and shop grid. Keep the product centered with margin and adjust the crop with Etsy's thumbnail tool when you upload.

How many photos can I add to an Etsy listing?

Etsy now allows up to 20 photos, up from 10, plus one video. The rollout was gradual, so check the photo section of your listing form for your current limit.

Why are my Etsy photos blurry?

Usually the image is too small or was compressed too heavily. Upload at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, start from a sharp photo and keep files around 1 MB rather than squeezing them much smaller.

Does Etsy require a white background?

No. Etsy has no background rule. Many shops use a lightly styled first photo; white works well for jewelry and small items. Consistency across your shop matters more than the specific choice.
