How to make an image square: crop it to 1:1 in your phone's photo editor (fast, but it cuts the sides), or pad it onto a square canvas with white, a color or a blurred fill so nothing is lost. For stores, export at 2000×2000 or 2048×2048 px; for Instagram, 1080×1080. AI extending fills the gap with matching background.
Square images are the default shape for product grids. Shopify collection pages, eBay search, Amazon zoom and most marketplace thumbnails look tidiest when every photo is 1:1. The trouble is that phones shoot at 3:4 or 9:16, so every photo needs converting. This guide compares the three ways to do it, gives exact steps on iPhone, Android and desktop, and explains when a square image is required and when it's only recommended.
- Crop when the subject sits in the middle with room around it. It's built into every phone.
- Pad when you can't lose any of the photo. White suits marketplaces; a blurred fill suits social posts.
- AI extend when the photo has a real background (a table, a room) and borders would look odd.
- Store size: 2000×2000 px (Amazon, Etsy, eBay zoom) or 2048×2048 px (Shopify's recommendation). Social: 1080×1080 px.
- Square is recommended, rarely required. But mixing shapes makes product grids look uneven.
Crop, pad or extend: which way should I make an image square?
Crop if you can spare the edges, pad if you can't, and extend if padding would look like a border. Here's how they compare:
| Method | What happens | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop | Trims the long side to match the short side | Centered subjects with space around them | Cutting off the top of a bottle or the ends of a shoe |
| Pad (solid color) | Places the whole photo on a square canvas | Marketplace photos on white | Visible bands if the photo background isn't the same color |
| Pad (blurred fill) | Fills the bands with a blurred copy of the photo | Instagram, Facebook posts | Looks out of place on marketplaces with white grids |
| AI extend | Generates new matching background in the gap | Lifestyle and in-context photos | Check for repeated patterns or odd objects |
How to make an image square on iPhone
Use the crop tool's Square preset in the Photos app.
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap the Crop icon at the bottom.
- Tap the aspect ratio icon (stacked rectangles) at the top and choose Square.
- Drag the photo inside the frame to position the subject, then tap Done.
This crops, so part of the photo is removed. Tapping Revert later restores the original. To keep the whole photo, use a padding tool instead (below).
How to make an image square on Android
In Google Photos, crop with the Square aspect ratio.
- Open the photo in Google Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Crop, then the aspect ratio icon.
- Choose Square, position the subject and tap Save copy.
Samsung Gallery works the same way: Edit, the crop icon, then the 1:1 ratio. Menu names vary a little by phone and app version. On a computer, our free image cropper has a 1:1 preset and shows the crop's size in pixels as you drag.
How to make an image square without cropping
Pad it. Padding puts the full photo on a square canvas and fills the empty sides, so nothing is cut and nothing is stretched.
- Open our free square image maker in any browser, phone or desktop. No sign-up.
- Add your photo.
- Pick a fill: white, your own color, or a blurred copy of the photo. Or choose crop and set the position.
- Choose an output size: 1080, 1600, 2000 or 2048 px square.
- Download.
You can do the same in Canva or Adobe Express by creating a 2000×2000 design, setting the background color and fitting the photo inside. It takes longer per photo, but works if you're already designing there.
If your product was shot on an off-white wall and you pad with pure white, the seams show as faint bands. Either sample the background color for the pad, or put the product on a clean pure-white background first so the photo and the padding match.
How to make a photo square with AI
Use an AI image extender (outpainting), which draws more of the scene into the empty space. A mug on a wooden table gets more table; a candle on a shelf gets more shelf. That beats padding for lifestyle photos, where a white or blurred band would look like a mistake.
Our AI image extender fills the extra space to a channel size such as Shopify 2048×2048 for 8 credits per size, without cropping or redrawing the product. Simple backgrounds extend cleanly; busy scenes are worth a quick check for repeated patterns. Our AI image extender guide shows what extends well and what doesn't.

Few platforms strictly require square images, but most product grids are built around them. Here's where square matters most:
| Platform | Square? | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Recommended; many themes crop or pad to the first image's shape | 2048×2048 px |
| Amazon | Not required, but square fills the zoom and gallery best | 2000×2000 px |
| eBay | Square displays best in search | 1600×1600 px or larger |
| Etsy | Thumbnails are cropped in search; a centered subject crops safely | 2000 px on the shortest side, or 2000×1600 (5:4) |
| Walmart Marketplace | Square recommended | 2200×2200 px |
| Instagram feed | Allowed; 4:5 takes more screen | 1080×1080 px |
| Facebook / Instagram catalog ads | 1:1 is the standard catalog shape | 1080×1080 px or larger |
Platform image shape recommendations were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Etsy is the odd one: listing thumbnails in search are cropped to a wider shape on many pages, so a square photo still loses a little top and bottom there. Keep the item centered with space around it and use Etsy's thumbnail adjust tool. Details are in our Etsy listing photo size guide. For Shopify, the Shopify product image size guide covers how themes handle mixed shapes.
Why do my product photos look uneven in my store?
Because they're different shapes. When one photo is square, the next is 3:4 and another is landscape, a collection grid shows different-sized tiles, or the theme crops some of them unevenly. Converting every photo to the same square size, with the product filling a similar share of each frame, fixes it. For marketplaces that want pure white main images, a cutout on a centered square does both jobs at once.
- Same canvas: every product image at the same square size.
- Same fill: product taking up roughly 80–90% of the frame.
- Same background: all white, or all one brand color.
- Same angle for the main photo: front-facing or the same three-quarter view.
AiArter's white background tool cuts the product out and centers it at about 85% of a 2000×2000 frame on pure white for 4 credits, and the product photo studio runs up to 50 photos in a batch. Our guide to consistent product photos covers the rest.
What size should a square image be?
2000×2000 px for marketplaces, 2048×2048 px for Shopify, and 1080×1080 px for social media. Larger squares give shoppers sharper zoom; there's little benefit beyond about 2500 px except for print. If your photo is smaller than the target, padding or cropping won't add detail, so upscale it first. For other shapes, see the aspect ratio guide; to resize a photo to any exact size, the free marketplace image resizer has channel presets.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a picture square without cropping it?
Pad it onto a square canvas instead of cropping. A square image maker or a design app like Canva places the whole photo on a 1:1 canvas and fills the sides with white, a color or a blurred copy of the photo.
How do I make an image square on my iPhone?
Open the photo in Photos, tap Edit, then the Crop icon, then the aspect ratio icon, and choose Square. This crops the photo; use a padding tool if you need to keep the whole image.
What size is a square image for Instagram?
1080×1080 pixels. Instagram also accepts 4:5 portrait (1080×1350), which takes up more of the feed, so many brands post 4:5 instead of square.
Do Shopify product images have to be square?
No, but Shopify recommends 2048×2048 px square images, and many themes size the product grid from the first image, so mixed shapes look uneven. Using square images for every product keeps collection pages tidy.
Can AI make a photo square?
Yes. An AI image extender adds new, matching background to the short sides so the photo becomes square without cropping. It works best on simple backgrounds; check busy scenes for repeated details.
Does making an image square reduce quality?
Cropping reduces the number of pixels but not their sharpness, and padding adds pixels without changing the photo. Quality only drops if you stretch the image to fit or enlarge it a lot.
Put products on clean square backgrounds, or extend lifestyle shots to 2048×2048, without redrawing the product itself.
