4:3 aspect ratio, in short: a slightly wide rectangle, 4 units wide for every 3 tall (1.33:1). Common 4:3 sizes are 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1440×1080, 1600×1200, 2048×1536 and 4032×3024, the size of a 12-megapixel phone photo. Height = width × 0.75. Held upright, the same shape is 3:4.

4:3 is the shape most phone cameras shoot by default, which makes it the starting point for most product photos, whether or not it ends up as the final shape. It was also the shape of old TVs and computer monitors, which is where the classic pixel sizes (VGA, SVGA, XGA) come from. This guide lists every common 4:3 size, how to calculate one, where sellers use it and how to convert a 4:3 photo into the square, 4:5 and 9:16 shapes marketplaces and social apps want. The free aspect ratio calculator works out any 4:3 size for you.
- The ratio: width ÷ height = 1.333. Height = width × 3 ÷ 4.
- Phone photos: 4032×3024 (12 MP) and 8064×6048 (48 MP) are 4:3; held upright they're 3:4.
- Classic screens: 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768 and 1600×1200.
- For sellers: crop to 1:1 for marketplaces, 4:5 or 3:4 for Instagram, 9:16 for Stories.
- 4:3 vs 16:9: 4:3 is boxier; a 16:9 frame is a third wider at the same height.
What are the 4:3 sizes in pixels?
Any size whose height is exactly three quarters of its width is 4:3. These are the common ones:
| 4:3 size | Megapixels | Name or typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 640×480 | 0.3 | VGA; old webcams and screens |
| 800×600 | 0.48 | SVGA; small web images |
| 1024×768 | 0.79 | XGA; classic iPad and laptop screens |
| 1280×960 | 1.23 | Web and email images |
| 1440×1080 | 1.56 | 4:3 HD video frame; social posts |
| 1600×1200 | 1.92 | UXGA; product pages |
| 2048×1536 | 3.15 | Retina iPad screens; sharp zoom |
| 4032×3024 | 12.2 | 12 MP phone camera photo |
| 8064×6048 | 48.8 | 48 MP phone camera photo |
How do you calculate 4:3 dimensions?
Multiply the width by 0.75 to get the height, or multiply the height by 1.333 to get the width.
| You have | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Height = width × 3 ÷ 4 | 2000 wide → 1500 tall |
| Height | Width = height × 4 ÷ 3 | 1080 tall → 1440 wide |
| Any size | Is width ÷ height = 1.333? | 1600×1200 = 1.333, so it's 4:3 |
Rounding matters at small sizes: 4:3 needs a width divisible by 4 to give a whole-number height. 1000 px wide gives 750 tall; 1001 px gives 750.75, which rounds and drifts slightly off 4:3.
Where is the 4:3 aspect ratio used?
| Where | How 4:3 is used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone cameras | Default photo shape on iPhone and most Android phones | Upright photos are 3:4 |
| Micro Four Thirds cameras | Native sensor shape | Most other interchangeable-lens cameras shoot 3:2 |
| Classic iPad and older screens | 1024×768, 2048×1536 | Many newer tablets are wider |
| Etsy search thumbnails | Cropped to roughly 4:3 landscape | Keep the product centered with margin |
| Facebook Marketplace | Square or 4:3 photos display well | Browse grid shows square crops |
| Presentations | The older default slide shape | PowerPoint and Google Slides now default to 16:9 |
| Prints | 6×8 and 9×12 inch are exactly 4:3 | 4×6 (3:2) and 8×10 (4:5) are different shapes |
Platform uses of 4:3 were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

What is the difference between 4:3 and 3:4?
They're the same shape turned 90 degrees. 4:3 is landscape (1440×1080); 3:4 is portrait (1080×1440). A phone photo is 4:3 if you hold the phone sideways and 3:4 if you hold it upright. Instagram's profile grid now uses 3:4 tiles, and Poshmark shows listing photos in 3:4, so upright phone photos fit both without cropping.
3:4 (0.75) is portrait and a little taller than 4:5 (0.8). 4:3 (1.33) is landscape. If a platform asks for 4:5 and you upload a 3:4 phone photo, it trims a sliver from the top and bottom. See 4:5 aspect ratio for the details.
Is 4:3 or 16:9 better?
It depends on where the image goes. 16:9 is the shape of TV, YouTube, laptops and website banners; 4:3 is boxier and shows more height, which suits products and still photos. At the same height, a 16:9 image is a third wider than a 4:3 one.
| Use | Better ratio | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Product photos to crop later | 4:3 (or 3:4 upright) | Phone default; keeps the most pixels |
| Marketplace listings | 1:1 | Amazon, Walmart and eBay show square tiles |
| YouTube, banners, slides | 16:9 | Fills widescreen without bars |
| Instagram and Threads feed | 4:5 or 3:4 (portrait) | Takes more of the screen |
| Stories, Reels, TikTok | 9:16 | Full screen vertical |
For widescreen sizes, see 16:9 aspect ratio; for vertical, 9:16 aspect ratio.
How do you convert a 4:3 photo to square, 4:5 or 9:16?
Crop if there's space around the product; extend the background if there isn't.
| From 4032×3024 (4:3) | Crop to | Or extend to |
|---|---|---|
| Square 1:1 | 3024×3024 (trim 504 px from each side) | 4032×4032 (add height) |
| Portrait 4:5 | 2419×3024 | 4032×5040 (add height) |
| Vertical 9:16 | 1701×3024 (loses 58% of the width) | 4032×7168 (add height) |
| Widescreen 16:9 | 4032×2268 (trim top and bottom) | 5376×3024 (add width) |
- Decide the final shape from where the image is going.
- If the product has room around it, crop with the free image cropper or make a square with the square image maker.
- If cropping would cut the product, extend the background instead.
- Resize for the platform; the free marketplace image resizer has presets for the main stores.
- Check the product isn't too small in the new frame.
AiArter's AI image extender turns a 4:3 photo into a Shopify square, Instagram 4:5, Story 9:16 or Pinterest 2:3 for 8 credits per size, generating matching background so nothing is cropped.

Use the 4:3 preset in your editor's crop tool, or type the exact pixel size. Every major phone and desktop editor has one.
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| iPhone Photos | Edit → Crop → aspect ratio button → 4:3 (or 3:4 for portrait) |
| Google Photos | Edit → Crop → aspect ratio → 4:3 |
| Windows Photos | Edit → Crop → aspect ratio → 4:3 |
| Photoshop and Lightroom | Crop tool → ratio 4:3 |
| Any browser | The free image cropper, ratio 4:3 |
- Crop, then resize. Set the shape first, then scale to 1440×1080, 2048×1536 or whatever the platform asks for.
- Don't stretch. Forcing a 16:9 image into 4:3 by changing width and height squashes the product.
- Check the thumbnail. If a marketplace shows square tiles, preview the center square of your 4:3 image too.
What is the 4:3 resolution for video?
640×480 for standard-definition 4:3 video and 1440×1080 for HD 4:3. Most social video is now 9:16 or 16:9, so 4:3 video shows with bars on the sides in a 16:9 player. If you have 4:3 product clips, crop them to 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds, or 9:16 for Reels and TikTok.
Should you shoot product photos in 4:3?
Yes, usually. 4:3 uses the whole phone sensor, so you get the most pixels and can crop to any other shape afterwards. Square or 16:9 camera modes simply crop the sensor, throwing pixels away before you've decided how you'll use the photo.
- Leave space around the product so you can crop to square, 4:5 or 9:16 later.
- Shoot upright (3:4) for social and resale apps, sideways (4:3) for banners and Etsy thumbnails.
- Avoid digital zoom; move closer or crop afterwards instead.
