4:5 aspect ratio, in short: a portrait shape 4 units wide for every 5 tall (0.8:1). The everyday 4:5 size is 1080×1350 pixels, the standard Instagram portrait post. Other 4:5 sizes are 800×1000, 1440×1800, 2000×2500 and 2400×3000 (an 8×10 inch print at 300 dpi). Sellers use it for feed posts, portrait product galleries and feed ads.

4:5 is the tallest shape that most social feeds show without cropping, which is why it became the default for Instagram portrait posts and many feed ads. It's only a little taller than a square, so a square product photo converts to 4:5 easily, either by adding a strip of background or by cropping a little off the sides. This guide lists every common 4:5 size, where it's used, how to calculate it and how to convert photos. The free aspect ratio calculator works out any 4:5 size, and the free Instagram image resizer turns a photo into 1080×1350 in your browser.
- The ratio: width ÷ height = 0.8. Height = width × 5 ÷ 4.
- Everyday size: 1080×1350 for Instagram, Threads and portrait feed posts.
- Print: 8×10 and 16×20 inch prints are 4:5.
- Close but different: 3:4 (1080×1440) is slightly taller; 2:3 (Pinterest) taller still.
- From a square: add 270 px of height to a 1080 square, or crop 20% off the width.
What are the 4:5 sizes in pixels?
Any size whose width is 80% of its height is 4:5. These are the common ones:
| 4:5 size | Megapixels | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 800×1000 | 0.8 | Web images, email |
| 1080×1350 | 1.46 | Instagram portrait posts, Threads, feed ads |
| 1440×1800 | 2.59 | Higher-resolution feed ads |
| 1600×2000 | 3.2 | Portrait product galleries |
| 2000×2500 | 5 | Sharp zoom on portrait product pages |
| 2400×3000 | 7.2 | 8×10 inch print at 300 dpi |
| 4800×6000 | 28.8 | 16×20 inch print at 300 dpi |

Feed posts and portrait product images. The platform details below come from each platform's own help pages, read in October 2026.
| Where | How 4:5 is used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed | Portrait posts at 1080×1350 | Instagram now also accepts 3:4 (1080×1440); feed photos are shown up to 1080 px wide |
| Pinterest video | One of four recommended shapes | 1:1, 2:3, 4:5 or 9:16 |
| Threads | Portrait images | Accepts 320–1440 px wide, up to 8 MB |
| Facebook and Instagram feed ads | Common portrait ad shape | Takes more screen than square |
| Shopify and other stores | Portrait product galleries | Popular for fashion and beauty |
| 8×10 and 16×20 inch | Frames and art prints |
Platform uses of 4:5 were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
For Instagram specifically, our Instagram post size guide explains when to choose 4:5 and when 3:4.
How do you calculate 4:5 dimensions?
Multiply the width by 1.25 (5 ÷ 4) to get the height, or multiply the height by 0.8 to get the width.
| You have | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Height = width × 5 ÷ 4 | 1080 wide → 1350 tall |
| Height | Width = height × 4 ÷ 5 | 2500 tall → 2000 wide |
| Any size | Is width ÷ height = 0.8? | 1200×1500 = 0.8, so it's 4:5 |
Should you use 4:5 or 1:1 for product photos?
Use 4:5 for social feeds and portrait-style stores, 1:1 for marketplaces. Most marketplaces show products in square tiles, while a 4:5 post takes about 25% more screen height in a feed than a square one at the same width.
| Use | Better ratio | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon, Walmart, eBay listings | 1:1 | Square image blocks and search tiles |
| Etsy | Square or 4:3 thumbnail | Etsy crops thumbnails; keep the product centred |
| Instagram and Threads feed | 4:5 | More screen space than square |
| Fashion and beauty stores | 4:5 | Fits people and tall products |
| Pinterest pins | 2:3 | Pinterest's recommended image shape |
See 1:1 aspect ratio for square sizes and Pinterest product pin size for 2:3.
How do you turn a square photo into 4:5?
Either add background above and below, or crop a little off each side. A 1080×1080 square becomes 1080×1350 by adding 270 px of height, or 864×1080 by cropping 108 px from each side (then scale up to 1080 wide).
| Method | Result | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Extend top and bottom | 1080×1350, nothing lost | The product fills the square edge to edge |
| Crop the sides | Loses 20% of the width | There's empty background beside the product |
| Pad with a solid color | 1080×1350 with bands | Quick posts; less polished |
- Open your square product photo.
- If there's space beside the product, crop to 4:5 with the free image cropper.
- If the product touches the edges, extend the background instead.
- Export at 1080×1350 (or 2000×2500 for product pages).
- Check the product isn't cut off at the top or bottom.
AiArter's AI image extender has an Instagram preset that returns 1080×1350 for 8 credits, generating matching background so nothing is cropped.

Most phones shoot 4:3 (3024×4032 held upright), which is slightly taller than 4:5. Crop a little off the top and bottom: 3024×3780 is 4:5. Some phones also offer a 4:5 or square mode in the camera app.
- Portrait 4:3 photo: crop the height to 1.25 × the width.
- Landscape photo: crop a vertical slice, or extend above and below.
- 9:16 photo or video frame: crop the top and bottom; 1080×1920 becomes 1080×1350.
They look similar but aren't the same. 4:5 is 0.8; 3:4 is 0.75, so it's a little taller (1080×1440 versus 1080×1350). Instagram's profile grid now uses 3:4 tiles, so a 4:5 post loses a sliver from each side there. Turned sideways, 3:4 becomes 4:3; see 4:3 aspect ratio.
Is 4:5 the same as 8x10?
Yes. 8×10 inches is the same proportion as 4:5, as is 16×20. At 300 dpi, an 8×10 print needs 2400×3000 pixels. A 1080×1350 social image is only 135 dpi at 8×10, so export a larger file for print.

What 4:5 size should product pages use?
2000×2500 pixels, or at least 1600×2000, so zoom stays sharp. Social posts only need 1080×1350, but a product page shows the image larger and lets shoppers zoom, so it needs more pixels.
| Use | 4:5 size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram, Threads, feed ads | 1080×1350 | Shown at up to 1080 px wide |
| Store product gallery | 1600×2000 to 2000×2500 | Sharp zoom on desktop |
| Print, 8×10 inch | 2400×3000 | 300 dpi |
- Keep every image of a product the same ratio so the gallery doesn't jump.
- Leave a little space above and below the product so themes that crop to square on collection pages don't cut it off.
- Export JPEG at high quality; a 2000×2500 photo is usually well under 1 MB.
Frequently asked questions
How do I crop a photo to 4:5 on an iPhone?
In Photos, tap Edit, then the crop tool, open the aspect ratio menu, choose the vertical option and pick 8:10, which is the same shape as 4:5, then drag to frame the product.
Does a 4:5 image work on Pinterest?
Yes, but Pinterest recommends 2:3 for standard pins, so a 4:5 pin shows a little shorter in the feed.
