Favicon Size (2026): Every Size, File Name and HTML Tag You Need

Favicon size, in short: make a square icon and export it at 16×16 and 32×32 for browser tabs (both inside a favicon.ico, often with 48×48), 180×180 for the Apple touch icon, and 192×192 plus 512×512 for the web app manifest. Google needs a square of at least 8×8 px and recommends larger than 48×48.

This is the spec page: every size, what uses it, the file names and the HTML that points to them. Our free favicon generator makes the whole set from one logo, letter or emoji in your browser. If you want step-by-step design tips and how to add the icon in Shopify, WordPress or Wix, read how to make a favicon next.

The short version
  • Tabs: 16×16 and 32×32 px, usually packed into favicon.ico with 48×48.
  • Apple: apple-touch-icon.png at 180×180 px, solid background, no transparency.
  • Android and installed sites: 192×192 and 512×512 px PNGs listed in site.webmanifest.
  • Google Search: square, at least 8×8 px, larger than 48×48 recommended; ICO, PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP, TIFF or PPM.
  • Master file: design once at 512×512 px or larger and scale down.

What size should a favicon be?

A favicon should be a square made in several sizes: 16, 32 and 48 px for browsers, 180 px for Apple devices and 192 and 512 px for Android and installed web apps. Each place picks the size closest to what it draws, so one tiny file isn't enough and one huge file gets scaled badly.

Size (px)Usual fileWhere it's used
16×16favicon.ico, favicon-16x16.pngBrowser tabs and bookmarks on standard screens
32×32favicon.ico, favicon-32x32.pngTabs on high-density (retina) screens, taskbar and shortcuts
48×48favicon.icoWindows desktop shortcuts; a safe size for Google Search
180×180apple-touch-icon.pngiPhone and iPad home screen when someone adds your site
192×192android-chrome-192x192.pngAndroid home screen and app launcher
512×512android-chrome-512x512.pngSplash screen when an installed site opens; store-builder uploads

Google's favicon guidelines (developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/favicon-in-search, last updated 28 August 2026) and web.dev's web app manifest guide were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

If you can only produce one file, make it a 512×512 PNG. Store builders take that and scale it down, and you can turn it into every other size later.

What favicon size does Google Search need?

Google needs a square favicon (1:1) of at least 8×8 px and recommends one larger than 48×48 px so it looks good everywhere it appears. The icon shows next to your site name in search results, so a blurry 16 px file is a poor first impression.

  • Formats Google lists: BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF. SVG isn't on the list, so serve a raster icon too.
  • rel values Google reads: icon, shortcut icon, apple-touch-icon and apple-touch-icon-precomposed.
  • One favicon per hostname. A shop at shop.example.com and a blog at example.com/blog are treated differently: the subdomain gets its own icon, the folder shares the site's.
  • Crawlable and stable. Googlebot-Image must be able to fetch the file, and the URL shouldn't change often.

Older Google guidance asked for a multiple of 48 px (48, 96, 144). The current page no longer says that, but 48, 96 or 192 px files still meet every version of the rule, and Wix still asks for multiples of 48 for uploaded PNGs. Meeting the guidelines doesn't guarantee Google shows your icon; it can also replace one it considers inappropriate.

Should a favicon be ICO, PNG or SVG?

Use favicon.ico as the default, PNGs for Apple and Android, and SVG only as an optional extra for modern browsers.

FormatSizes it holdsBest forWatch out for
ICOSeveral in one file (16, 32, 48)favicon.ico at the site root; every browser reads itNeeds a converter or generator to make
PNGOne per fileApple touch icon, manifest icons, store-builder uploadsMake each size separately
SVGAny (vector)A crisp tab icon that can switch colors for dark modeNot in Google's format list and not used by every browser, so keep ICO or PNG as fallback

An SVG favicon can include a prefers-color-scheme media query so a dark logo turns light in dark tabs. It's a nice touch, not a requirement. If your logo only exists as SVG, convert it with the free SVG to PNG converter first, or load it straight into the favicon generator, which accepts PNG, SVG, JPG and WebP.

Upload a logo, or type a letter or emoji, and download favicon.ico, the 16 and 32 px PNGs, the 180 px Apple icon, 192 and 512 px Android icons, site.webmanifest and the HTML in one ZIP.

What are the favicon file names and HTML tags?

Name the files as below, put them in your site's root folder and add the matching tag to the <head> of every page.

android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png192, 512Listed inside site.webmanifest, no tag of their own

Browsers also request /favicon.ico from the root by default, so keep that file there even if you list others. In site.webmanifest, the icons array names each PNG with its sizes and type; Chromium browsers need at least the 192 and 512 px icons there for a site to be installable, and scale them for other screens.

Store builders do this for you

Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce and Wix ask for one uploaded image in a settings page and write the tags themselves. Shopify recommends a 32×32 square and scales larger uploads down; WordPress asks for at least 512×512; Wix wants a multiple of 48 px. The exact clicks for each are in how to make a favicon. Marketplace shop pages such as Etsy and Amazon show the marketplace's own icon, not yours.

What size is an Apple touch icon?

An Apple touch icon is 180×180 px, the size iPhones use when someone adds your site to the home screen. iPad uses smaller versions, but they're scaled from the 180 px file, so one is enough.

  • Solid background. iOS doesn’t keep transparency, so see-through areas turn into a solid fill that can look wrong. Put the mark on your brand color.
  • No rounded corners of your own. iOS rounds the corners for you.
  • A little padding. Keep the mark off the edges so the rounding doesn't clip it.

What size are Android and web app manifest icons?

Android and installed web apps use 192×192 and 512×512 px PNGs listed in the web app manifest. The 192 px file appears on the home screen and launcher; the 512 px one is used for the splash screen and larger displays.

Some Android launchers crop icons into circles or rounded squares. If you mark an icon as maskable in the manifest, keep the important part in the central area (about 80% of the width) so the crop never touches it. A favicon with generous padding on a solid color works as both.

How do you design a favicon that reads at 16 pixels?

Use one simple mark in two high-contrast colors: a 16 px icon is 256 pixels in total, so words and fine lines disappear.

DoAvoid
First letter or monogram of the brandThe full logo with small text
Bold shape filling most of the squareThin outlines with wide margins
Brand color background with a light markLow-contrast pastels on white
Checking it in a light and a dark tabTesting only at 512 px

If your logo has a white box around it, cut it out with the free remove white background tool, and pad a wide logo to a square with the square image maker so nothing gets squashed. For colors that match the rest of your store, see how to choose brand colors.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a favicon?

There isn't one size. Make 16, 32 and 48 px (in favicon.ico), 180 px for the Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 px for the manifest, all from a 512 px or larger square master.

Is 32x32 or 16x16 better for a favicon?

Include both. Browsers use 16×16 on standard screens and 32×32 on high-density screens, and favicon.ico can hold both in one file.

What favicon size does Google recommend?

Google's guidelines say the favicon must be square and at least 8×8 px, and recommend one larger than 48×48 px. 48, 96 or 192 px all work.

Do favicons still need to be a multiple of 48px?

Google's current page doesn't require it, though older versions did. Using 48, 96, 144 or 192 px satisfies both, and Wix still asks for multiples of 48.

What size is favicon.ico?

favicon.ico is a container that usually holds 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 images. The file itself is typically a few KB to a few dozen KB.

Can I use a PNG as a favicon?

Yes. All modern browsers accept PNG favicons, and Google lists PNG as a supported format. Keep a favicon.ico at the root too, because browsers request it by default.

What size favicon should I upload to Shopify?

Shopify recommends a 32×32 px square and scales larger images down to that, so a bold 512 px PNG uploads cleanly.

Can a favicon be an SVG?

Yes, most modern browsers support an SVG favicon, but Google Search doesn't list SVG as a format and not every browser uses it. Serve it alongside an ICO or PNG.
