To compress an image to 1MB, save it as JPG at quality 80–90 and, if it's still too big, cap the longest side at about 2500–3000 px. Most phone photos fit at near-full size. For 500KB, aim for 2000 px at quality 75–85. Our free compress image to 1MB tool finds the highest quality that fits, and has an Under 500 KB setting too.

1 MB and 500 KB are the “roomy” limits. You meet them on email builders, marketplace and store uploads, document portals and contact forms, and as the sensible ceiling for any photo on a fast website. Unlike a 20 KB or 100 KB limit, they leave enough space to keep a product photo sharp enough to zoom, so the job is to shrink the file without throwing away pixels you need. This guide covers where these limits come from, the pixel sizes that fit, and the free ways to get there on any device.
- 1 MB: most photos fit at 3000–4000 px as JPG quality 80–90; busy, noisy shots may need 2500 px.
- 500 KB: about 2000 px on the longest side at quality 75–85, which still zooms well on a marketplace.
- Free tools: the compress to 1MB tool has Under 1 MB preselected and Under 500 KB in the same menu; nothing is uploaded.
- Save as JPG or WebP. A PNG photo can be 3–8 MB at 2000 px and has no quality setting.
- Leave a margin: aim for about 950 KB or 480 KB if the site counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes.
How do I compress an image to 1MB online for free?
Use a target-size compressor: add the photo, keep the 1 MB target and download the result.
- Open the compress image to 1MB tool. Free, no account.
- Drop in up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC files at once.
- Keep Under 1 MB selected, with JPG output for forms and marketplaces or WebP for a website.
- The tool tests quality levels and keeps the highest that fits (up to 92). Only if quality 60 is still too big does it shrink the image, 15% at a time.
- Check each file's new size and pixel dimensions, then download them singly or as a ZIP.
A JPG that's already under 1 MB is kept exactly as it is rather than re-compressed. The tool runs in your browser, so photos never leave your device, and saved copies drop EXIF data such as GPS location. It only ever makes images smaller, never larger.
How do I compress an image to 500KB?
Open the same tool and choose Under 500 KB from the Target file size menu; there's no separate 500 KB page because the option sits in the one compressor.
- Open the compress to 1MB tool or the general free image compressor.
- Under Target file size, pick Under 500 KB. The menu also has 20, 50, 100 and 200 KB, 1 MB and 2 MB.
- Optional: set Max size (longest side) to 2000 px. The menu offers 4096, 2560, 2048, 2000, 1600, 1200, 1080 and 800 px. Capping the size first means the quality search starts from a sensible size and usually lands higher.
- Download. Each file shows the quality it used, and whether it had to be resized to fit.
The max-size cap is the useful extra here. Without it, a 4000 px photo might squeeze into 500 KB at a mediocre quality; capped at 2000 px it fits at a high one, and 2000 px is all a marketplace or store page needs. If you'd rather set the quality yourself, turn the target off and use the slider instead.
All 33 of our own product photos (about 1000 px) were under 1 MB as JPG, even at quality 95 (median 111.0 KB). Saved as optimized PNG, 5 of the 33 were over 1 MB. See the format study
What pixel size fits in 1MB and in 500KB?
Roughly full phone resolution for 1 MB and about 2000 px for 500 KB, depending on how much detail the photo holds.
| Image | Fits in 500 KB at | Fits in 1 MB at |
|---|---|---|
| Product on a white background | 2000–2500 px, quality 85 | 3000+ px, quality 90 |
| Lifestyle product shot | 2000 px, quality 80 | 2500–3000 px, quality 85 |
| Everyday phone photo | 1800–2000 px, quality 75–80 | 3000–4000 px, quality 80–85 |
| Busy scene (foliage, fabric, crowds) | 1600–1800 px | 2500 px |
| Low-light photo with grain | 1500–1800 px | 2000–2500 px |
| Scanned A4 page in color | 2000 px tall | 2500–3000 px tall |
These are typical figures, not promises. Plain backgrounds compress very well, which is why a white-background product photo at 2000×2000 often lands at 300–600 KB. Grain, texture and busy patterns push the size up at the same pixel count. For a deeper look at quality settings and formats, see how to reduce image file size.
Where do 1MB and 500KB limits come from?
Mostly from email builders, upload forms and page-speed advice. Few marketplaces set a hard 1 MB cap; it's more often a recommendation or a habit that keeps uploads reliable.
| Where | What the limit is | What to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp, Klaviyo email images | 1 MB or less recommended per image (Klaviyo's hard limit is 10 MB) | A few hundred KB; see the email header guide |
| Etsy listing photos | No hard 1 MB rule; around 1 MB uploads most reliably | Under 1 MB at 2000 px+ on the shortest side |
| Amazon images | Up to 10 MB accepted | 1–3 MB is fine; 500 KB–1 MB is plenty at 2000 px |
| Shopify product images | Up to 20 MB and 5000×5000 px | Under 1 MB; Shopify serves smaller copies to shoppers |
| Shopify banners and theme images | Up to 20 MB and 20 megapixels | Under about 1 MB |
| Squarespace images | 20 MB per image | 500 KB or less loads faster |
| Job, visa and document portals | Often 1 MB, 500 KB or less per file | 950 KB or 480 KB to be safe |
The email, marketplace and store limits in this table, taken from our platform guides, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
For a website, the upload limit is rarely the issue; speed is. A store page with eight 4 MB photos makes shoppers on mobile data wait. Shopify and most builders resize images for delivery, but they still start from your upload, so keeping originals under 1 MB costs nothing visible. Our Shopify product image size and website image sizes guides give the dimensions to use.
How to compress an image to 1MB on iPhone and Android
- iPhone: save the photo to Files, press and hold, choose Quick Actions > Convert Image > JPEG and pick Large for a 1 MB limit or Medium for 500 KB. Check the result with Get Info.
- iPhone Mail: when you attach large photos, Mail can offer Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size. Large is usually under 1 MB.
- Samsung: Gallery > three-dot menu > Resize image, pick a percentage, then check the size in Details.
- Any phone: open the 1MB tool in the browser and pick photos from your library. HEIC works, and so does the 500 KB option.
The built-in phone sizes vary from photo to photo, so they don't guarantee a specific limit; a target-size tool does. To stop new iPhone photos saving as HEIC, set Settings > Camera > Formats to Most Compatible, or convert existing ones with the HEIC to JPG converter.
How to compress an image to 1MB on Windows and Mac
Windows
- Right-click the photo > Open with > Photos, then the three-dot menu > Resize image.
- Set the longer side to about 3000 px for 1 MB or 2000 px for 500 KB, and quality around 80–85 if your version shows a slider.
- Save a copy and check its size under Properties.
Mac
- Open the image in Preview and choose File > Export.
- Pick JPEG and drag the quality slider while watching the File Size readout.
- If the slider has to go very low, cancel, use Tools > Adjust Size to set the width to about 2500 px, and export again.
Finder counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, Windows as 1,024. Our tool uses 1,024, so “under 1 MB” means under 1,048,576 bytes. If a portal says “max 1 MB” and rejects a file the tool made, it's probably counting 1,000,000 bytes: use the 500 KB target or cap the size at 2560 px and run it again.

At 1 MB you barely lose anything visible if the photo starts clean and you save it once. The few things that matter:
- Resize to where it's shown. A photo displayed at 1000 px gains nothing from 4000 px; cap the size and spend the bytes on quality.
- Crop first. Trim empty background with the free image cropper so the file holds the product, not the table around it.
- Compress once from the original. Each re-save of a JPG adds new artifacts.
- Shoot in good light. Low-light grain is random detail that JPG can't simplify, so noisy photos come out bigger and blotchier.
- Pick WebP for your own website where it's supported; it usually keeps more detail at the same size. Keep JPG for marketplaces such as Amazon.
If a marketplace or form asks for, say, a 2000×2000 square, set that first with the free image resizer. At 2000 px most photos fit under 1 MB on quality alone, so the compressor won't need to change the dimensions you just set.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to 1MB?
Save it as JPG at quality 80–90; most photos are then under 1 MB. If not, cap the longest side at about 2500–3000 px. A free compress-to-1MB tool does both and shows the final size.
How do I compress an image to 500KB?
Resize it to about 2000 px on the longest side and save as JPG at quality 75–85. In our compress-to-1MB tool, choose Under 500 KB from the Target file size menu and it finds the best quality that fits.
Is there an image compressor under 1 MB that's free?
Yes. The compress-to-1MB tool is free with no sign-up, handles up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC files at once, and runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Does compressing to 1MB reduce quality?
Very little. A 1 MB JPG at 3000 px looks the same as the original on any screen and is fine for small prints. Quality only suffers if a very large or noisy photo is forced to fit without resizing.
Why is my photo still over 1MB?
It may be a PNG, which has no quality setting, or a very large, grainy photo. Convert to JPG or WebP and cap the longest side at 2500 px. Also check whether the site counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes.
What resolution is a 1MB image?
There's no fixed number, because file size depends on detail and quality. As a guide, a typical JPG photo at quality 80–85 fits in 1 MB at 3000–4000 px, and a 500 KB file at about 2000 px.
What file size should product photos be?
Around 500 KB to 1 MB at 2000 px works for Amazon, Etsy, eBay and Shopify. Etsy uploads are most reliable around 1 MB, and Amazon accepts up to 10 MB.
How many KB is 1 MB?
1,024 KB in the binary convention Windows and our tool use, or 1,000 KB in the decimal one Mac Finder uses. Aim for 950 KB when a form is strict.
AiArter turns your phone shots into clean white-background and lifestyle images at 2000 px, so they stay sharp whichever limit you compress them to.
