How to Compress an Image to 50KB (2026): Free Steps for Phone and PC

To compress an image to 50KB, resize it to roughly 600–900 px on the longest side and save it as JPG at quality 65–80; a clean photo on a plain background can stay near 1000 px. Our free compress image to 50KB tool does it in one step, keeping the highest quality that fits.

50 KB is a common ceiling on application forms (photos and scanned documents), forum avatars, email signatures and older websites. It's tight enough that a full-size phone photo can't reach it by lowering quality alone, but roomy enough to keep a face or product sharp if you size it right. Below: the free tool, step-by-step methods on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, a size chart, and how to stop text and faces from going blotchy.

The short version
  • Sweet spot: 600–900 px longest side, JPG quality 65–80.
  • One-step option: the compress to 50KB tool searches quality, then reduces pixels in small steps if needed. Free, nothing uploaded.
  • Crop before compressing so the bytes go to the subject.
  • PNG won't shrink by quality. Save photos as JPG.
  • Stay a little under: 45–48 KB is safe for forms that measure in 1,000-byte KB.

How do I compress an image to 50KB for free?

Drop the image into a target-size compressor and download the result; it works the same on a phone or a computer.

  1. Open the compress image to 50KB tool (no sign-up).
  2. Add up to 20 images: JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC straight from an iPhone.
  3. Leave Under 50 KB selected. Choose JPG for forms, or WebP for your own website.
  4. The tool finds the highest quality that fits, up to 92. If even quality 60 is too big, it shrinks the image 15% at a time and tries again.
  5. Each file shows its new size, quality and dimensions. Download one at a time or as a ZIP.

The compression happens on your device, so private documents stay private. The saved copy has its EXIF data removed, including any GPS location from your phone camera.

What size image is 50KB?

For a typical JPG photo, about 600–900 px on the longest side. The exact figure depends on how much detail and noise the image has.

ImagePixels that usually fit in 50 KBJPG qualityGood for
Product on white900–1100 px75–85Thumbnails, catalog pages

If a form gives exact pixel dimensions, size the image to those with the free image resizer first. Common form sizes, such as a few hundred pixels wide, fit under 50 KB at high quality without the compressor needing to touch the dimensions.

How to compress an image to 50KB on iPhone and Android

Phone galleries can make photos smaller but can't aim for 50 KB, so pair them with a browser tool or use the browser tool alone.

  • iPhone, quickest: open the 50KB compressor in Safari, tap to add photos and pick from your library. HEIC is handled for you.
  • iPhone, built in: save the photo to Files, press and hold, Quick Actions > Convert Image > JPEG > Small. Check the size with Get Info.
  • Samsung: in Gallery, open the photo, three-dot menu > Resize image, choose the smallest percentage, then check Details.
  • Any Android: open the tool in Chrome; results save to Downloads.

Crop in the phone's photo editor first so the face or document fills the frame. On iPhone, setting Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG, which every form accepts.

How to compress an image to 50KB on Windows and Mac

Windows

  1. Open the image in Paint, press Ctrl+W, choose Pixels and set the longer side to about 800.
  2. File > Save as > JPEG picture.
  3. Right-click the file > Properties. If it's over 50 KB, resize smaller and save again (Paint has no quality control).

Recent versions of the Windows 11 Photos app have a Resize image option with a quality slider, which gets there faster.

Mac

  1. Open the image in Preview, choose Tools > Adjust Size and set the width to around 800 px.
  2. File > Export, choose JPEG and lower the quality slider until the File Size readout drops under 50 KB.

Remember that Finder counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and Windows counts 1,024. A file Finder calls 50 KB is about 49 KB on Windows, so it's fine; stay at 45–48 KB if the form is fussy.

Why do images lose quality when compressed to 50KB?

JPG compression throws away fine detail, and the less room it has per pixel, the more it throws away. Too many pixels in too few bytes gives blocky skin, halos around letters and banded walls.

So the order matters: crop, then resize, then compress at a reasonable quality. Going the other way, keeping 3000 px and dropping quality to 20, looks far worse at the same 50 KB. Our main guide to how to reduce image file size explains compress versus resize and formats in more depth, and how to resize an image without losing quality covers the resizing step.

Keeping faces and text readable

  • Crop tight with the free image cropper: head and shoulders for a portrait, just the page for a document.
  • Light it well. Window light, no flash glare, no harsh shadows. Grain from a dark room wastes bytes.
  • Scan documents in grayscale unless color is required; it saves space and keeps text crisp.
  • Lift contrast slightly in the free photo editor so text is dark and paper is white.
  • Compress from the original, not from a copy that was already shrunk.
  • Zoom to 100% before uploading and read the smallest text. If you can't, raise the pixel size a little or split a long document into pages.
Read the minimum and the format too

Forms often say "JPG only, 20–50 KB". A PNG under 50 KB or a JPG under 20 KB can both be rejected. If yours comes out too small, use the tool's quality slider mode or pick a larger target and resize to the form's maximum pixel size.

Which target should you choose: 20KB, 50KB or 100KB?

Always the one the form asks for, because more bytes means more detail.

20 KB300–450 pxCompress to 20KB
50 KB600–900 pxCompress to 50KB

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a JPEG to 50KB?

Resize it to about 600–900 px on the longest side and save at quality 65–80. A free compress-to-50KB tool does both automatically and shows the final size, so you don't need to guess.

How do I reduce photo size to 50KB on my phone?

Open a browser compressor in Safari or Chrome, select the photo and download the result. Built-in options such as iPhone's Convert Image or Samsung's Resize image make photos smaller but don't target 50 KB, so check the size afterwards.

What resolution is a 50KB image?

It depends on detail and quality, but a typical JPG photo fits 50 KB at around 600–900 px on the longest side. Simple images on plain backgrounds can be closer to 1000 px.

Is 50KB enough for a passport-size photo?

Usually, yes. A head-and-shoulders photo on a plain light background fits under 50 KB at several hundred pixels wide with good quality. Follow the pixel size and background rules in the form's own instructions.

Why can't I get my PNG under 50KB?

PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting to lower. Convert the image to JPG (or WebP where accepted) and it will compress much further.

Does compressing to 50KB change the image dimensions?

Only if it has to. A compress-to-size tool first lowers quality; if that isn't enough it reduces the pixel size. Resize to the form's exact dimensions first if they're fixed.
