How to Convert HEIC to JPG (2026): iPhone, Mac, Windows and Free Online

How to convert HEIC to JPG: on an iPhone, press and hold the photo in the Files app and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image > JPEG. On a Mac, right-click in Finder and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image. On Windows 11, use Photos > Save as > JPG. Or set Camera > Formats to Most Compatible.

HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in by default. It keeps files roughly half the size of a JPG at similar quality, which is great for your phone's storage and a nuisance everywhere else: many marketplaces, website builders, print shops and older Windows PCs won't open it. This guide covers every free way to convert HEIC to JPG in 2026, on iPhone, Mac, Windows and the web, plus how to convert a whole batch at once and how to stop the problem at the camera. If you just want it done, our free HEIC to JPG converter turns up to 20 photos into JPGs in your browser without uploading them.

The short version
  • iPhone: Files app > press and hold > Quick Actions > Convert Image > JPEG. Select several files first to convert a batch.
  • Mac: select files in Finder > right-click > Quick Actions > Convert Image, or open in Preview and choose File > Export > JPEG.
  • Windows 11: install HEIF Image Extensions (and HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store, then Photos > Save as > JPG.
  • Any device: a browser converter such as our free image compressor converts up to 20 HEIC files to JPG without uploading them.
  • Prevent it: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible makes the iPhone shoot JPG from now on.

What is a HEIC file, and why won't it open?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's version of the HEIF image format, and iPhones have used it by default since iOS 11. It compresses photos better than JPG, so a 12-megapixel iPhone photo is often 1–2 MB as HEIC versus 2–4 MB as JPG. The catch is support. Apple devices open HEIC natively, but plenty of other software still doesn't.

Marketplace file format lists were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

If you sell online, JPG is the format every channel accepts, so converting before you upload saves rejected uploads and blank thumbnails. Our JPG vs PNG vs WebP guide explains which format suits which job.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone

Use the Files app's Convert Image action, which has been built into iOS since iOS 16 and makes a new JPG next to the original.

  1. In the Photos app, select the photos, tap Share and choose Save to Files. Pick a folder.
  2. Open the Files app and go to that folder.
  3. Press and hold one photo and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image. For a batch, tap the three-dot menu > Select, choose the photos, then tap the three-dot menu at the bottom and choose Convert Image.
  4. Pick JPEG as the format, then a size. Choose Original to keep full resolution.
  5. The JPG copies appear in the same folder. The HEIC originals stay untouched.

Menu wording can shift between iOS versions, so if you don't see Quick Actions, look for Convert Image directly in the long-press menu. Sharing a photo by Mail or Messages also often sends a JPG copy, but it may be resized, so don't rely on it for listing photos.

Stop your iPhone saving HEIC in the first place

  1. Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
  2. Choose Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG (and videos as H.264).
  3. Optional: under Settings > Apps > Photos (just Settings > Photos on older iOS), set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic so photos copied to a computer by cable arrive as JPG.

Most Compatible files take more storage, and some video modes such as 4K at 60 fps need High Efficiency. Many sellers keep HEIC for everyday shots and switch to Most Compatible for product shoots.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

Finder's Convert Image Quick Action is the fastest way, and it handles a batch in one go.

  1. Select one or more HEIC files in Finder.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image.
  3. Set the format to JPEG and the image size to Actual Size.
  4. Untick Preserve Metadata if you don't want location data in the copies.
  5. Click Convert to JPEG. New files land in the same folder.

This action has been in Finder since macOS Monterey. On any macOS version you can also open the photo in Preview, choose File > Export, pick JPEG and set the quality slider (about 80–90% is a good balance). To export many at once, open them all in Preview, select every thumbnail in the sidebar and choose File > Export Selected Images. If the photos are in the Photos app, drag them to the desktop or use File > Export > Export Photos and choose JPEG.

iCloud photos must be downloaded first

If you use Optimize Mac Storage, some originals live only in iCloud. Finder and Preview can't convert a placeholder, so let the photo download fully before converting.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 11

Install Microsoft's HEIF support, then save the photo as a JPG from the Photos app or Paint.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extensions (free). If photos still won't open, also install HEVC Video Extensions; there is a free "from Device Manufacturer" version on many PCs and a paid version from Microsoft for about $0.99.
  2. Right-click the HEIC file and choose Open with > Photos.
  3. Click the three-dot menu and choose Save as.
  4. Set the file type to JPG, name the file and click Save.

Paint works too once the extensions are installed: open the file, choose File > Save as > JPEG picture. Both apps convert one photo at a time. For a folder of photos, use a browser converter (next section) or a free desktop tool such as IrfanView or GIMP. Store names and prices change, so check the listing before you pay for anything.

Can you convert HEIC to JPG online for free?

Yes. Browser converters work on any computer or phone, and the best ones convert on your device instead of uploading your photos to a server.

  1. Open our free image compressor and converter. No sign-up.
  2. Drop in up to 20 HEIC or HEIF photos (JPG, PNG and WebP work too).
  3. Choose JPG as the output format and a quality; 80 is the default and suits listings.
  4. Optionally cap the longest side, for example at 2000 px, to shrink file size.
  5. Download each file or all of them as one ZIP.

The conversion runs in your browser, so the photos never leave your device, and saving a new copy drops EXIF data such as location. Whatever converter you use, check its privacy policy if it uploads files, especially for photos of your home or family.

What about Google Photos?

Google Photos stores and displays HEIC files, but downloads usually come back as the original HEIC, not JPG. Some guides suggest right-clicking the open photo in a browser and saving the displayed image, which can produce a JPG, but that copy may be smaller than the original. If you need full-resolution JPGs, download the originals and convert them with one of the methods above.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, but at quality 80–90 the difference is invisible on a listing. JPG compression is lossy, so converting re-encodes the image, and the JPG file will usually be larger than the HEIC even though it holds no extra detail. Convert once from the original, don't convert a JPG back and forth, and keep the HEIC originals until you're sure the copies look right. If file size matters, see how to reduce image file size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on my iPhone for free?

Save the photos to the Files app, press and hold one, and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image > JPEG, then pick Original size. Select several files first to convert them together. The originals are kept.

How do I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so convert those separately.

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows 11 needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, and sometimes HEVC Video Extensions, to read HEIC. Install them from the Microsoft Store, then open the file in Photos and use Save as > JPG.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, because JPG is lossy, but at quality 80 to 90 the change isn't visible on screen. The JPG is usually larger than the HEIC even though it holds no extra detail.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files to JPG at once?

Yes. Use the Files app's Convert Image on iPhone, Finder's Convert Image Quick Action on a Mac, or a browser converter that takes a batch, such as AiArter's free image compressor, which handles 20 files at a time.

Does Amazon accept HEIC images?

No. Amazon accepts JPEG, PNG, TIFF and non-animated GIF, and recommends JPEG. Etsy also doesn't accept HEIC, so convert iPhone photos to JPG before listing.
