To compress an image to 20KB, first shrink it to a small pixel size, about 300–450 px wide for a face photo or 400–600 px wide for a signature, then save as JPG at quality 60–80. Our free compress image to 20KB tool does both automatically, finding the highest quality that fits.
20 KB is one of the tightest limits you'll meet, and it's almost always on government, exam, visa or job application forms asking for a photo or a scanned signature. A phone photo is 100 to 200 times bigger than that, so quality alone can't get you there: you have to reduce the pixel count. This guide shows the dimensions that fit, the free ways to do it on a phone or computer, and how to keep a face recognizable and a signature crisp at such a small size.
- Pixels first. 20 KB holds roughly 300–450 px wide for a photo and 400–600 px for a signature on white.
- Free and automatic: the compress to 20KB tool tries quality levels, then shrinks the image in small steps if it has to.
- Signatures: dark ink on plain white paper, cropped tight, compresses to well under 20 KB.
- Watch the minimum. Many forms want 10–20 KB, so a 4 KB file can fail too.
- If the form gives pixel dimensions, resize to those exactly first; the KB limit is then easy.
How do I compress an image to 20KB online?
Use a compress-to-size tool that is allowed to reduce pixel dimensions, because at 20 KB it nearly always has to.
- Open the compress image to 20KB tool. It's free and needs no account.
- Add your photo or signature scan (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC; up to 20 files at once).
- Keep Under 20 KB and JPG selected. Most forms want JPG.
- The tool searches for the best quality that fits. If quality 60 still doesn't fit, it shrinks the image by 15% at a time until it does; below 480 px it will go down to quality 30 before giving up.
- Read the result line: new size, quality and whether it was resized. Download the file.
Your photo never leaves your device, because the compression runs in the browser. If the form fixes exact pixel dimensions, resize first (below) so the tool can hit 20 KB on quality alone without changing them.
What dimensions do you need to get a photo under 20KB?
As a rule of thumb, about 100,000–200,000 pixels in total for a photo, which is roughly 300×400 to 400×500. Plain backgrounds let you go bigger.
| What you're uploading | Pixel size that usually fits 20 KB | Typical JPG quality |
|---|---|---|
| Signature, black or blue ink on white | 400–600 × 150–250 px | 75–90 |
| Face photo on a plain white background | 300–400 × 385–500 px | 65–80 |
| Face photo, busy background | 250–350 px wide | 60–70 |
| Thumb impression scan | 250–350 px square | 70–80 |
| Product on white (thumbnail) | 400–500 px square | 70–80 |
| Outdoor or detailed photo | 250–350 px | 60–70 |
These are typical results, not promises; grain, texture and color all add bytes. If your form names exact dimensions, such as a small passport-style photo around 200×230 px or a signature around 140×60 px, those sizes fit under 20 KB at high quality with room to spare.
How to compress a signature to 20KB
Sign on plain white paper, photograph or scan it in good light, crop tight and save as JPG; a clean signature is usually 5–15 KB.
- Sign with a black or dark blue pen on plain white paper, larger than you need. A thicker pen survives shrinking better than a fine one.
- Photograph it flat from directly above in daylight, with no shadow from your phone, or scan it.
- Crop tight around the signature with the free image cropper, leaving a small white margin.
- Raise brightness and contrast in the free photo editor until the paper is white and the ink is solid. Grey, shadowy paper costs bytes and looks bad.
- If the form gives dimensions, resize to them with the free image resizer (custom width and height, JPG).
- Run it through the 20KB compressor and check the result.
Signature fields often say "10 KB to 20 KB". A tightly cropped, very clean signature can come out at 4–6 KB and be rejected. If that happens, resize it larger (keeping the form's pixel limit) or save at a higher quality to add a few KB.
How to compress a photo to 20KB on a phone
Built-in phone tools can't target 20 KB, so a browser tool is the most reliable option on both iPhone and Android.
- iPhone: open the 20KB tool in Safari and choose the photo from your library; HEIC photos are converted for you. Files > Convert Image > Small reduces size, but usually not as far as 20 KB.
- Samsung: Gallery > three-dot menu > Resize image shrinks by percentage. Pick the smallest option, then check the size under Details; you may still need a compressor.
- Other Android phones: open the tool in Chrome; the file saves to Downloads, ready to attach in the form.
Crop on the phone first (the Photos or Gallery edit screen has a crop tool) so the face or signature fills the frame. Every pixel of empty background is a byte the face can't use.
How to compress a photo to 20KB on Windows or Mac
- Windows Paint: Ctrl+W, choose Pixels, set the width (say 350), then Save as > JPEG picture. Paint has no quality slider, so if it's still over 20 KB, resize smaller.
- Windows Photos: three-dot menu > Resize image; recent Windows 11 versions let you set pixels and quality together.
- Mac Preview: Tools > Adjust Size to about 350 px wide, then File > Export as JPEG and drag the quality slider while watching the file size readout.
- GIMP (free): Image > Scale Image, then File > Export As JPG; tick Show preview in image window to see the size as you change quality.
Mac shows sizes with 1 KB = 1,000 bytes; Windows and most forms use 1,024. A file Finder calls 20 KB is about 19.5 KB elsewhere, so it passes. Aim for 17–19 KB to be safe either way.

At 20 KB the JPG encoder has very few bytes per pixel, so if the image is too large it smears detail and creates blocky edges. Shrinking the pixel size first keeps quality high where it counts.
- Fill the frame with the subject. Head and shoulders, or just the signature, cropped close.
- Use a plain, light background. A white wall behind a face can halve the file size compared with a patterned room.
- Avoid low light. Grain looks like detail to the encoder and wastes bytes.
- Don't sharpen heavily. Strong sharpening adds edge detail that is costly to store; a light touch is enough.
- Compress once from the original. Re-compressing a 20 KB file to fix it compounds the damage.
- Try WebP only if the form accepts it; it keeps more detail at the same size, but most forms require JPG.

20KB vs 50KB: which should you pick?
Use exactly what the form asks for. If it says "maximum 50 KB", there's no reason to squeeze to 20 KB; the 50 KB tool keeps a lot more detail. Our guides on compressing to 50KB and resizing photos for online application forms cover the other common limits, pixel sizes and DPI fields.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce my photo size to 20KB?
Crop the photo to head and shoulders, resize it to about 350–400 px wide, and save it as JPG at quality 65–80. A free compress-to-20KB tool does the resizing and quality search for you and shows the final size.
How do I make my signature 20KB?
Sign in dark ink on white paper, photograph it flat in daylight, crop tight and boost contrast so the paper is pure white. Saved as JPG at 400–600 px wide, it will usually be 5–15 KB.
What dimensions are needed for a 20KB image?
There's no fixed size, but about 100,000–200,000 pixels in total, such as 350×450, fits most face photos at decent quality. Signatures on white can be wider because blank paper costs almost nothing.
Can I compress a photo to 20KB on my phone without an app?
Yes. Open a browser-based compress-to-size tool in Safari or Chrome, pick the photo and download the result. Nothing needs installing, and with a browser tool like ours the photo isn't uploaded.
Why is my 20KB photo rejected?
The usual reasons are the wrong format (PNG instead of JPG), a file under the minimum such as 10 KB, pixel dimensions outside the allowed range, or a form that counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. Recheck each rule in the form's instructions.
Will a 20KB photo look blurry?
It will look soft if the pixel size is too large for 20 KB. At around 350×450 px it looks clear on screen, which is all an application form needs.
