How to Reduce Image File Size (2026): Compress, Resize and Free Tools

How to reduce image file size: resize the image to the pixel size you actually need (2000 px on the longest side covers almost every marketplace), then save it as JPG or WebP at quality 70–85. Together these usually cut a phone photo from 3–5 MB to 200–800 KB with no visible difference. Avoid PNG for photos.

Big image files bounce off email limits, fail marketplace uploads and slow your store pages down. The fix is rarely a special app; it's two settings most people already have: pixel dimensions and compression quality. This guide explains compress versus resize, which quality to choose, which format is smallest, the free tools on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and the upload limits worth knowing in 2026.

The short version
  • Resize first. Halving the width and height cuts the pixel count by 75%, and the file size roughly with it.
  • Then compress. JPG or WebP at quality 70–85 looks the same as 100 on screen at a fraction of the size.
  • Pick the right format. WebP is smallest, JPG is accepted everywhere, PNG is several times larger for photos.
  • Free tools: Mac Preview, Windows Photos, iPhone Files, or our free image compressor for 20 files at once.
  • Targets: about 1–3 MB for marketplace uploads, under 1 MB for Etsy and email, 100–300 KB for web pages.

What's the difference between compressing and resizing an image?

Resizing reduces the number of pixels; compressing stores the same pixels in fewer bytes. Both shrink the file, and they work best together.

ResizeCompress

Visible effectNone, if the new size still fits the useNone at 70–85; blocky below ~60
When to useThe image is bigger than where it's shownAlways, as the last step

A modern phone shoots 12 to 48 megapixels, yet a marketplace zoom needs about 4 (2000×2000) and a phone screen shows about 1. That gap is where most of the file size goes.

What quality setting should you use?

Use 70–85 for JPG and WebP. Below about 60, edges get blocky and smooth gradients band; above about 90, files grow fast with no visible gain.

QualityTypical 2000×2000 JPGLooks likeUse for

60–70200–400 KBSlight softness in fine textureBlog and thumbnails
Below 60Under 200 KBBlocky edges, bandingAvoid for products

These are typical ranges; detailed, noisy photos compress less than clean ones on white. Every app numbers quality slightly differently, so compare the result at 100% zoom rather than trusting the number.

Which image format has the smallest file size?

WebP, then JPG, with PNG far behind for photos.

  • WebP: about 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, and supports transparency. Ideal for your own website; not accepted by Amazon or Etsy.
  • JPG: small and accepted everywhere. The default for listings and email.
  • PNG: lossless, so a photo is often 3–10× larger than a JPG. Keep it for transparent cutouts, logos and text graphics. For PNG photos, our free PNG to JPG converter switches up to 20 at a time.
  • HEIC: small, but many sites and PCs can't open it. See how to convert HEIC to JPG.

Our JPG vs PNG vs WebP guide covers the trade-offs in detail, and how to convert PNG to JPG shows the quickest saving for oversized PNG photos.

How to reduce image file size for free

In your browser (any device)

  1. Open our free image compressor. No sign-up.
  2. Drop in up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC files.
  3. Choose JPG or WebP and a quality (80 is the default).
  4. Set a max size, such as 2000 px for listings or 1200 px for email.
  5. Download the files or a ZIP. Each shows how much it shrank.

Compression runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded, and the new copies drop EXIF data such as GPS location.

On a Mac (Preview)

  1. Open the image in Preview and choose Tools > Adjust Size.
  2. Set the width or height in pixels (keep Scale proportionally ticked) and click OK.
  3. Choose File > Export, pick JPEG and move the quality slider to about 75–85%. Preview shows the file size as you drag.
  4. Save as a new file.

For a batch, select the files in Finder, right-click and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image, then pick JPEG and a size such as Large.

On Windows 11 (Photos)

  1. Open the image in Photos, click the three-dot menu and choose Resize image.
  2. Enter a new width or height in pixels or a percentage, and adjust quality if your version shows the slider.
  3. Save a copy.

Older versions of Photos only offer fixed presets. For a batch, Microsoft's free PowerToys adds an Image Resizer to the right-click menu, and IrfanView or XnConvert handle hundreds of files with a quality setting.

On iPhone and Android

  • iPhone: save the photos to Files, press and hold (or select several), choose Convert Image, pick JPEG and a size: Small, Medium or Large instead of Original.
  • Mail on iPhone: when you attach large photos, Mail can offer Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size.
  • Android: many gallery apps include a resize option, but it varies by maker; a browser compressor works on all of them.

What are the email and upload size limits?

Most email services cap attachments at 20–25 MB per message, and marketplaces at 10–20 MB per image, but smaller files upload faster and fail less.

ServiceLimitAim for
Gmail (personal)25 MB per message; larger files go as a Drive linkUnder 10 MB total
Outlook.comAbout 20–25 MB depending on account; OneDrive link for moreUnder 10 MB total
Yahoo Mail25 MB per messageUnder 10 MB total
Amazon listing imagesCommonly cited as 10 MB1–3 MB
eBay12 MB per photo1–3 MB
Shopify20 MB per imageUnder 1 MB
EtsySmaller files upload more reliablyAbout 1 MB

Email attachment and marketplace upload limits were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Attachments are bigger than they look

Email encodes attachments, which adds roughly a third to their size. Five 4 MB photos (20 MB) can bounce off a 25 MB limit. Resize to about 1200–2000 px first.

Common mistakes that keep files big, or ruin them

  • Saving photos as PNG. Switch to JPG or WebP for an instant 3–10× saving.
  • Compressing without resizing. A 48-megapixel photo at quality 60 is still big and now looks worse.
  • Re-compressing the same JPG. Each save loses a little quality. Always export from the original.
  • Shrinking below the platform minimum. Amazon wants at least 1,000 px on the longest side for zoom; don't go under it.
  • Overwriting the original. Keep full-size masters; you can't get pixels back.

If you've already shrunk an image too far, enlarging it in a normal editor only makes it blurry. An AI upscaler such as our AI image upscaler (3 credits) rebuilds detail at 4× the size, which is useful when the original is gone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce the file size of an image without losing quality?

Resize it to the pixel dimensions you need, then save as JPG or WebP at quality 75 to 85. On screen that looks the same as the original while cutting the file by 70 to 90 percent. Keep the original as a master.

How do I make a photo smaller to email it?

Resize it to about 1200 to 1600 pixels on the longest side and save as JPG at quality around 80. Each photo ends up around 200 to 500 KB, so several fit well under Gmail's 25 MB limit.

What is a good file size for product images?

About 500 KB to 2 MB for 2000 by 2000 marketplace images, under 1 MB for Shopify and Etsy, and 100 to 300 KB for images on your own web pages.

Does reducing file size reduce image quality?

Resizing reduces detail only if you go below the size it's displayed at. Compression at quality 70 to 85 isn't visible on screen; below about 60 you'll see blocky edges and banding.

How do I reduce image file size on iPhone?

Save the photo to the Files app, press and hold it, choose Convert Image, pick JPEG and a size like Medium or Large. You can also use a browser compressor, which works on iPhone without an app.

Is WebP smaller than JPG?

Usually yes, by about 25 to 35 percent at similar quality. Use it on your own website, but upload JPG to Amazon and Etsy, which don't accept WebP.
