How to remove background from a picture in PowerPoint: select the picture, go to Picture Format > Remove Background; the background turns magenta. Use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove to fix it, then click Keep Changes. It works in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, 2021 and 2024 on Windows and Mac.
PowerPoint's background remover is free with the app, already on most work computers, and good enough for a headshot, a product on a plain wall or a logo on white. It struggles with hair, fur and busy backgrounds. This guide covers the exact steps on Windows and Mac, the one-click Set Transparent Color trick for solid backgrounds, how to save the cut-out as a PNG, what to do in PowerPoint for the web and Google Slides, and when an AI cut-out saves time.
- Main tool: Picture Format > Remove Background, then Mark Areas to Keep or Remove, then Keep Changes.
- Solid backgrounds: Picture Format > Color > Set Transparent Color removes one color in a single click.
- Save the cut-out: right-click the picture > Save as Picture > PNG.
- Not for vectors: Remove Background is grayed out for SVG, WMF and similar files.
- Google Slides: has a Remove background option, but only with an eligible Gemini or Google AI subscription; otherwise insert a transparent PNG made elsewhere.
- Hair, fur, glass or many photos: an AI background remover gives cleaner edges, faster.
How to remove background from a picture in PowerPoint on Windows
Select the picture, open Picture Format, click Remove Background, adjust, and keep the changes.
- Insert the picture (Insert > Pictures) and click it to select it.
- Go to Picture Format > Remove Background. If you don't see the Picture Format tab, double-click the picture.
- PowerPoint colors the parts it plans to remove in magenta and leaves the subject in its normal colors.
- If part of the subject is magenta, click Mark Areas to Keep and draw over it with the pencil. Short strokes work better than careful outlines.
- If part of the background is still showing, click Mark Areas to Remove and draw over it.
- Click Keep Changes (or Discard All Changes to start again).
Crop the picture tightly before you start. The less background PowerPoint has to analyze, the fewer corrections you'll make.
How to remove a picture background in PowerPoint on Mac
The Mac steps are almost identical; the tab may be called Picture Format or just Format, depending on your version.
- Click the picture.
- Go to Picture Format > Remove Background (or Format > Remove Background).
- Check the magenta area, then use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove to correct it.
- Click Keep Changes.
| Version | Remove Background | Set Transparent Color | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 (Windows) | Yes | Yes | Picture Format tab |
| PowerPoint 2021 / 2024 (Windows) | Yes | Yes | Same steps |
| PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac, 2021, 2024 | Yes | Yes | Tab may read Format |
| PowerPoint for the web | Varies | Varies | Not covered by Microsoft's main help article; use the desktop app if missing |
| Vector images (SVG, WMF) | No | No | Option is grayed out |
Microsoft's Remove Background steps and version support were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
How to use Set Transparent Color in PowerPoint
For a logo or product on a solid, single-color background, Set Transparent Color removes the background in one click.
- Select the picture.
- Go to Picture Format > Color > Set Transparent Color.
- Click the background color in the picture. Every pixel of exactly that color turns transparent.
It only removes one exact color, so it works on a flat white or flat blue background and fails on photos, where the "white" wall is really dozens of shades. It also removes that color inside the subject: a white logo element on a white background disappears too. For a logo you'll reuse, see our guide on making a logo background transparent.
How do you save the picture without its background?
Right-click the picture and choose Save as Picture, then pick PNG so the transparent area is kept.
PowerPoint doesn't delete the background pixels; it hides them, which is why you can reopen Remove Background later and change your marks. Saving as PNG gives you a cut-out you can use in Word, Canva or on a website. Don't choose JPG: it can't store transparency and the background turns white. Our guide to JPG vs PNG vs WebP explains why.
- The picture is a vector (SVG, WMF, EMF). Convert it to a shape or use a PNG version.
- You selected a shape, chart or SmartArt rather than a picture.
- Several pictures are selected. Select just one.
- The file is open in an older format or in a viewer that doesn't support editing.
Can you remove a background in PowerPoint for the web?
Sometimes. Microsoft's main help article covers the Windows and Mac apps, and support in the browser version has varied over time, so look for Remove Background on the Picture tab and open the file in the desktop app if it isn't there.
On Windows 11, the Paint app also has a one-click Remove background button, and Microsoft suggests its Designer app for images outside Office. Either gives you a PNG to insert into a web presentation.
How to remove a picture background in Google Slides
Google Slides has a built-in Remove background option, but it needs an eligible Google Workspace plan with Gemini or a Google AI subscription for personal accounts.
- Click the image on your slide.
- Click Edit image, then Remove background. You can also use Format > Image > Edit image > Remove background.
- If you need the original back, use Undo or Version history. Reset image won't restore it.
If you don't have that subscription, the workaround is to remove the background elsewhere and insert the PNG with Insert > Image. On an iPhone, touch and hold the subject in Photos and copy it; our guide to removing a background on iPhone has the steps. Google Slides keeps transparency in PNGs, so the cut-out sits straight on your slide color.
When are AI cut-outs cleaner than PowerPoint?
Use an AI background remover when the edges are complex, the background is busy, or you have more than a few pictures. PowerPoint's tool works by color contrast and your pencil marks; AI tools recognize the subject itself.
| Picture | PowerPoint Remove Background | AI background remover |
|---|---|---|
| Logo or product on plain white | Good; Set Transparent Color may do it in one click | Good |
| Headshot on an office wall | Usable; hair edges look choppy | Clean, including loose hair |
| Pet or fluffy product | Fur gets clipped or blotchy | Much cleaner |
| Glass, bottles, clear packaging | Struggles | Better, still worth checking |
| Product on a busy table | Many manual marks | One step |
| 20 product photos for a catalog deck | 20 rounds of marking | One batch upload |
AiArter's AI background remover returns a transparent PNG for 4 credits per image, and failed results aren't charged. For a deck full of product shots, the bulk background remover takes up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download. Insert the PNGs into PowerPoint and they sit cleanly on any slide color. If you're building sales sheets or social graphics rather than slides, design templates can be a quicker starting point.

- Start with a large, sharp picture. Small images give jagged edges once the background is gone.
- Crop first to cut out as much background as possible.
- Zoom in (View > Zoom, or Ctrl/Cmd + scroll) before marking areas.
- Add a soft shadow (Picture Format > Picture Effects > Shadow) so the subject doesn't look pasted on.
- Test on the slide color you'll actually use. Leftover pale edges show up on dark slides.
- Compress pictures last. Compressing with Delete cropped areas checked makes the background removal permanent. If big camera photos are bloating the deck, shrink their file size before you insert them with a free image compressor.
If the picture is a product you sell, the same cut-out can become a store image. See how to make a product photo background white.
