How to Remove Shadows from Photos (2026): iPhone, Android, Lightroom and AI

How to remove shadows from photos: for soft shadows, raise the Shadows slider (+30 to +70) in your phone's editor or Lightroom. For hard shadows cast on a background, paint them out with a healing or Clean Up tool, or replace the background. Next time, diffuse your light and add a white card opposite it to fill shadows before you shoot.

Shadows are the most common reason a product photo looks amateur: a dark blob beside the item, a phone-shaped shadow across the top, or one side of the product falling into darkness. Some shadows are easy to lift in seconds; others, especially sharp shadows cast across a background, need a different approach. This guide covers how to prevent them, how to remove each type in the apps you already have, and which shadows you should keep.

The short version
  • Soft, dark areas on the subject: raise Shadows, then Blacks slightly. Works in iPhone Photos, Google Photos, Snapseed and Lightroom.
  • Hard shadow cast on the background: use a healing, Clean Up or Magic Eraser tool, or remove the background entirely.
  • Shadow across a face or product: a masked brush (Lightroom, Photoshop) or an AI edit prompt gives the cleanest result.
  • Prevention beats editing: diffuse the light, add a white fill card, and don't stand between the light and the product.
  • Keep a contact shadow: a faint shadow right under the product stops it looking like it's floating.

What kind of shadow are you removing?

The fix depends on the shadow, so identify it first.

How do you remove shadows from a photo on iPhone?

Raise the Shadows slider for dark areas, and use Clean Up for a shadow cast on a background.

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Under Adjust, choose Shadows and drag right (+30 to +70).
  3. If the image goes flat, add a little Contrast or Black Point back.
  4. For a cast shadow, tap Clean Up and brush over the shadow. It fills the area from the surroundings.
  5. Tap Done. You can revert any time.

Clean Up is part of Apple Intelligence and needs a supported iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro or newer) and a recent iOS version. Apple says it recognizes the shadows of objects you remove, but a shadow on its own can be hit-and-miss, so brush generously and try twice.

How do you remove shadows on Android?

In Google Photos, raise Shadows under Adjust, and use Magic Eraser on cast shadows.

  • Google Photos: Edit > Adjust > Shadows. Magic Eraser (under Tools) removes distractions and can catch shadows when you brush them; Google has made it free on most phones.
  • Samsung Gallery: Edit > Adjust > Shadows, plus the Object Eraser, which has a shadow-removal option on many Galaxy models.
  • Snapseed (free, Android and iPhone): Tune Image > Shadows for overall lift; Brush > Exposure for one area; Healing for small cast shadows.

Menu names change between versions, so if you can't see an option, look for it under Tools or Actions in the editor.

How do you remove shadows in Lightroom or Photoshop?

Use masks to lift only the shadow, and the Remove or healing tools for shadows on plain backgrounds.

  • Lightroom (mobile and desktop): Light > Shadows +40 to +80 for overall lift. For one area, Masking > Brush, paint over the shadow and raise Exposure and Shadows until it matches. Basic edits are free in Lightroom mobile; AI masking and Generative Remove are Premium.
  • Photoshop: Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights for a quick lift. For a cast shadow on a plain surface, select it with the Lasso tool and use Generative Fill or Content-Aware Fill, or paint over it with the Spot Healing Brush.
  • Match color, not just brightness. Shadows are often bluer than lit areas. After brightening, warm the masked area slightly with the Temperature slider.
Brightening has a cost

Pushing Shadows hard lifts noise and can leave a grey halo where shadow meets light. If you need more than about +70, the shot was too dark; use a masked brush on just the shadow, or reshoot. Our guide on fixing a dark photo covers noise in more detail.

Can AI remove shadows from photos?

Yes. AI edit tools let you type “remove the shadow on the left” or “remove harsh shadows, even lighting” and they redraw the image. They handle shadows across a background well. Because they regenerate pixels, check fine details such as label text afterwards, and keep your original.

  1. Upload the photo to an AI editor.
  2. Describe the shadow precisely: where it is and what should be there instead (“remove the dark shadow on the white table to the right of the bottle”).
  3. Compare the result with the original at full size, especially edges and text.
  4. If the product changed, use a cut-out and new background instead, which keeps the product untouched.

Type what you want gone, such as “remove the shadow behind the mug”, and the AI image editor applies it.

How do you prevent shadows when taking photos?

Make the light bigger and softer, fill the dark side, and keep yourself out of the light path.

  1. Diffuse: shoot by a window with indirect light, or hang thin white fabric, baking paper or a shower curtain between the light and the subject.
  2. Fill: place a white card, foam board or sheet of paper opposite the light, just out of frame. It bounces light into the shadow side.
  3. Raise the subject: move it 30–50 cm away from the backdrop so its shadow falls behind it, out of view.
  4. Avoid overhead room lights mixed with daylight; they add a second shadow and a color cast.
  5. Shoot flat-lays at an angle or zoom in from a little higher so your body and phone don't block the light.
  6. Use two lights for products: one on each side at 45° cancels most shadows.

A shoebox or folding lightbox with white sides does most of this for you; our DIY lightbox guide shows how to build one.

When should you keep a shadow?

Keep the small contact shadow directly under a product; remove shadows that fall across the background or hide details. A product with no shadow at all can look cut out and pasted.

ShadowKeep or remove?Why
Soft contact shadow under the productKeepGrounds the product, looks real
Long cast shadow across the backgroundRemoveDistracting, looks messy in thumbnails

If you remove all shadows by cutting the product out, add a soft one back. Our guide on how to add a shadow to a product photo covers drop, contact and reflection shadows.

Removing shadows from product photos at scale

For product listings, replacing the background is usually faster than retouching each shadow, because the shadow goes with the old background.

  • Clean white with a soft shadow (4 credits). AiArter's product photo tools cut the product out of your photo, place it on pure white or another plain color, and add an even, soft shadow if you want one, instead of the messy original.
  • Transparent cut-out (4 credits). The background remover drops the background and its shadows entirely.
  • AI edit (8 credits) for shadows across the product itself, using a plain-words prompt.
  • Bulk: up to 50 photos per batch; failed photos aren't charged.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove shadows from a photo for free?

Raise the Shadows slider in iPhone Photos, Google Photos or Snapseed, all free. For a shadow cast on a background, use Clean Up on a supported iPhone, Magic Eraser in Google Photos, or Snapseed's Healing tool.

How do I remove a shadow from my face in a photo?

Use a brush or mask over the shadowed area and raise Exposure and Shadows until it matches the lit side. Lightroom and Snapseed both have brush tools. Warm the area slightly if it looks blue.

Can I remove a hard shadow from a background?

Yes. On a plain background, healing or AI erase tools fill it from the surrounding area. On a busy background, an AI edit prompt or replacing the background works better.

How do I take product photos without shadows?

Use soft, diffused light from a window or through fabric, put a white card opposite the light, and keep the product 30–50 cm from the backdrop. Two lights at 45° on each side remove almost all shadows.

Why does my photo look grey after removing shadows?

Lifting shadows also lifts the darkest tones. Bring Blacks or Black Point back down and add a little Contrast so the image has true darks again.

Should product photos have shadows?

A soft contact shadow under the product usually looks more natural than none. Amazon allows natural shadows on white main images; avoid long, dark cast shadows.
