How to Remove Background in Canva (2026): Steps, Plans and Free Alternatives

How to remove background in Canva: select your photo, click BG Remover in the editor toolbar (under Edit on some versions), wait a few seconds, then fix edges with the Erase and Restore brushes. It's a paid feature on Canva Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits, works on photos under 9 MB, and larger photos are downscaled to 10 MP.

Canva's background remover is one of the easiest in any design app, which is why so many people search for it. The catch is that it isn't on the free plan, and neither is downloading a PNG with a transparent background. This guide gives the exact steps on desktop and mobile, what each plan includes, the limits that trip people up, tips for cleaner cut-outs, and honest free alternatives if you don't want to pay.

The short version
  • Steps: select photo > BG Remover > refine with Erase and Restore > download.
  • Plans: Canva Pro, Business (formerly Teams), Education and Nonprofits. Not Canva Free.
  • Limits: photos under 9 MB, no vector images, output downscaled to 10 MP.
  • Transparent PNG downloads are also a paid feature.
  • Free alternatives: iPhone and Samsung built-in cut-outs, Adobe Express, and free trials of AI tools (most add a watermark or limit resolution).
  • Many photos? A batch tool that handles dozens at once is faster than Canva's one-at-a-time editor.

How to remove background in Canva, step by step

On canva.com or the desktop app it takes three clicks: select the photo, click BG Remover, and wait.

  1. Open or create a design and add your photo (drag it in, or upload it from the Uploads tab).
  2. Click the photo to select it.
  3. In the toolbar above the design, click BG Remover. If you don't see it, click Edit or Edit image first and find BG Remover in the side panel.
  4. Wait a few seconds while Canva processes the photo.
  5. Use the Erase brush to remove leftover background and the Restore brush to bring back parts of the subject that were cut off. Adjust brush size for fine areas.
  6. Click Done or click outside the panel to apply.
  7. To save a cut-out with no background, delete the page background color, go to Share > Download, choose PNG and tick Transparent background.

On the Canva mobile app

Tap the photo, tap Edit in the bottom toolbar, then tap BG Remover. Canva's help center notes that the Erase and Restore brushes are only on canva.com and the desktop app, so if the mobile result needs fixing, open the design on a computer.

Removing the background without opening a design

Canva's help center also describes running BG Remover on a photo from the Projects tab, which saves opening it in a design first. It's still built for a handful of images, not a catalog of hundreds.

Is Canva's background remover free?

No. BG Remover is included with Canva Pro, Canva Business, Canva for Education and Canva for Nonprofits. On Canva Free the button is visible but asks you to upgrade or start a Pro trial.

Canva's plan features and background remover limits were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Canva Pro pricing in the US has been reported at around $15–18 a month, depending on billing and when you signed up, with a discount for yearly billing. Prices vary by country and change from time to time, so check canva.com/pricing. Canva usually offers a free Pro trial to new accounts; if you only need a few cut-outs, that trial covers them, but set a reminder to cancel if you don't want to pay.

What are the limits of Canva's BG Remover?

The main limits are file size (under 9 MB), resolution (output capped at 10 MP) and file type (photos only, not vector images).

  • 9 MB file limit. Large camera files or HEIC photos from a new phone can exceed it. Export a smaller JPG first, or convert and shrink it with a free image compressor that takes HEIC files.
  • 10 MP output. Photos above 10 megapixels (about 3650×2740) are downscaled after removal. Fine for social posts and most product images; not ideal for large print.
  • No vectors. SVGs and other vector elements can't use BG Remover.
  • Brushes on desktop only. Erase and Restore aren't on the mobile app.
  • Fine detail. Hair, fur, glass and transparent packaging are where results vary most.

How to get a cleaner cut-out in Canva

The cleaner the original photo, the cleaner the cut-out: strong contrast between subject and background matters more than anything you do afterwards.

  1. Shoot on a plain, contrasting background. A dark product on a light wall, or the reverse.
  2. Use even light. Soft window light avoids deep shadows that the remover may treat as part of the subject.
  3. Crop first. Trim away clutter at the edges so the remover has less to guess about.
  4. Zoom in to refine. Use a small Restore brush on thin parts such as straps, handles and hair.
  5. Add a shadow afterwards. A cut-out with no shadow looks like it's floating; Canva's Shadows effect adds a soft one.
  6. Check on dark. Put a black rectangle behind the cut-out to spot leftover pale edges.

About the AiArter trial

Trial images carry a small “Made with aiarter” mark; paid plans export clean files you can use commercially. That's fine for testing a cut-out or a mockup, but not for marketplace listings, which reject watermarked images.

When is a batch tool better than Canva?

Use a batch tool when you have more than a dozen photos, need the same treatment on all of them, or need marketplace-ready product images rather than design elements.

  • Volume. Canva is built around editing one design at a time. A batch tool takes 50 photos in one go and returns a single ZIP.
  • Consistency. Product catalogs need the same frame, centering and background on every image. Batch tools apply one setting to all of them.
  • Marketplace main images. Amazon wants pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling about 85% of the frame. A tool built for that gets it right every time; in Canva you'd size each one by hand.
  • Resolution. Canva caps BG Remover output at 10 MP; product tools usually export at a fixed marketplace size such as 2000×2000.

AiArter's bulk background remover handles up to 50 photos per batch, at 4 credits per transparent PNG or white-background image, and failed photos aren't charged. The product photo tools add brand-color and lifestyle backgrounds. Our guide to removing backgrounds from multiple images compares batch options. Canva is still the better place to build the finished design: banners, social posts and thumbnails.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see BG Remover in Canva?

You may be on the free plan, have a video or vector element selected instead of a photo, or be on a version where it sits under Edit or Edit image. Photos over 9 MB also won't process.

How do I download a transparent PNG from Canva?

Remove the page background color, go to Share, then Download, choose PNG and tick Transparent background. That option is only available on paid plans.

Can I remove a background in Canva on my phone?

What is the best free alternative to Canva's background remover?

For a single photo, the built-in cut-out on an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy is free and quick. Adobe Express also removes backgrounds for free. For many product photos, a batch tool with a free trial is faster, though trial output is often watermarked.

Background removal for whole product catalogs

Upload up to 50 product photos at once and get transparent PNGs or pure white backgrounds in one ZIP, then finish your designs wherever you like.
