How to convert PNG to JPG: on Windows, open the PNG in Paint and choose File > Save as > JPEG picture. On a Mac, open it in Preview, choose File > Export and pick JPEG at 80–90% quality. A photo usually shrinks 3–10×. Any transparent background turns solid, usually white, so keep PNG for logos and cutouts.
PNG is lossless, which makes it perfect for graphics, screenshots and transparent cutouts, and wasteful for photos: a 2000×2000 product photo is often 3–8 MB as PNG and well under 1 MB as JPG. This guide covers how to convert PNG to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone and online, how to do a batch, what happens to transparency, and the cases where you should not convert at all. For a quick batch, our free PNG to JPG converter handles up to 20 files in your browser and fills transparent areas with white.
- Windows: Paint > File > Save as > JPEG picture, or Photos > Save as > JPG.
- Mac: Preview > File > Export > JPEG, or select files in Finder > Quick Actions > Convert Image for a batch.
- Online: our free image compressor converts up to 20 PNGs to JPG in your browser and fills transparency with white.
- Transparency is lost. JPG has no alpha channel; see-through areas become white or black.
- Don't convert logos, text graphics, screenshots or cutouts you'll place on other backgrounds.
Should you convert PNG to JPG?
Convert when the image is a photo and file size matters; keep PNG when it has transparency, sharp text or flat graphics.
| Image type | Convert to JPG? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Product photo on a solid background | Yes | Much smaller file, no visible quality loss at 80–90 |
| Amazon or Walmart main image on white | Yes | JPEG is the recommended format |
| Transparent product cutout | No | The background would turn solid |
| Logo or icon | No | Edges blur and transparency is lost |
| Screenshot or graphic with small text | Usually no | JPG adds fuzzy artifacts around text |
| Infographic with photos and text | Depends | JPG at quality 90 is often fine; check the text |

What happens to transparency when you convert PNG to JPG?
It's replaced with a solid color, because JPG can't store transparency. Most tools fill it with white, some with black, and a few let you choose. A cutout bottle on a transparent background becomes a bottle on white, which is exactly what you want for an Amazon main image and exactly what you don't want for a logo you plan to drop onto a colored banner.
- Paint (Windows): usually fills it with white, and may warn you first.
- Preview (Mac): usually fills with white, but results vary by version; check the file.
- Photoshop: flattens onto a matte color you choose in the Export or Save a Copy dialog.
- Our free compressor: fills with pure white.
Some apps and older converters fill transparency with black. Convert again with a tool that fills white, or in Photoshop or GIMP add a white layer underneath before exporting.

How much smaller is a JPG than a PNG?
For photos, usually 3 to 10 times smaller; for flat graphics, sometimes not smaller at all.
| Image | Typical PNG | Typical JPG (quality 80–90) |
|---|---|---|
| 2000×2000 product photo | 3–8 MB | 300 KB–1 MB |
| 1080×1350 social photo | 1.5–3 MB | 150–400 KB |
| Logo, flat colors | 20–100 KB | Similar or larger, with blurry edges |
| Screenshot with text | 200 KB–1 MB | Smaller, but text looks fuzzy |
These are typical ranges, not guarantees; detail, noise and dimensions all change the result. If the file is still too big after converting, our guide on how to reduce image file size covers resizing and quality settings.
Which format do marketplaces want?
JPG is the safest choice for listing photos; PNG is accepted almost everywhere too.
| Platform | Accepts PNG? | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Yes | JPEG |
| Etsy | Yes | JPG |
| eBay | Yes | JPEG |
| Shopify | Yes | PNG or JPEG; Shopify serves WebP/AVIF itself |
| Walmart | Yes | JPEG |
Marketplace format recommendations were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Uploading a PNG isn't wrong; it's just larger. The exception is a transparent PNG as a main image: marketplaces that require a white background may display transparency as white, grey or black, so flatten it onto pure white first.

- Resize to the channel's size with the free marketplace image resizer.
- Export as JPG at quality 80–90.
- Check edges at 100% zoom for halos left by the cutout.
AiArter's white background tool (4 credits) does the cutout and the pure white background in one step, with the product centered at about 85% of a 2000×2000 frame. The transparent PNG cutout is also 4 credits if you want the master file. Background techniques are covered in how to make a product photo background white and how to make a product image transparent. For other formats, see WebP to JPG.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?
Export at JPG quality 85 to 95 from Preview, Photoshop or a converter with a quality slider. JPG is always slightly lossy, but at that range the difference isn't visible in photos. Keep the PNG as a master copy.
Why does my PNG get a black background when converted to JPG?
JPG can't store transparency, so the converter fills transparent areas with a color, and some choose black. Use a tool that fills white, or add a white layer behind the image before exporting.
Is JPG or PNG better for product photos?
JPG for most product photos: smaller files and accepted everywhere. PNG for transparent cutouts, logos and graphics with small text, where JPG would blur edges or lose transparency.
How do I convert PNG to JPG on Windows 10 or 11?
Open the PNG in Paint and choose File > Save as > JPEG picture. The Photos app's Save as option also works. For many files, use a batch converter or a browser tool.
Does converting PNG to JPG reduce file size?
For photos, yes, often by 3 to 10 times. For logos and flat graphics, the JPG can be about the same size or larger and will look worse, so keep those as PNG.
Can I convert multiple PNG files to JPG at once?
Yes. Use Finder's Convert Image Quick Action on a Mac, the Files app on iPhone, IrfanView or XnConvert on Windows, or AiArter's free compressor, which converts up to 20 files at a time in the browser.
