Amazon Handmade image requirements, in short: Handmade listings follow Amazon's standard image rules. The main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), the product filling about 85% of the frame, and no props or text. Files are JPEG, PNG, TIFF or non-animated GIF, 500–10,000 px on the longest side; 1,000 px or more turns on zoom, and 2000×2000 is the safe target.

Many makers move to Amazon Handmade from Etsy and expect the same freedom with photos: a wooden table, a styled flat lay, a hand holding the piece. On Amazon, that only works in the extra image slots. Amazon's own Handmade program page says approved artisans list through the standard listing process, so the main image is held to the same white-background rule as every other Amazon product. An older Handmade style guide from 2016 allowed neutral backgrounds, which is why advice online conflicts. This guide gives the current rules, what the other slots can show, and how to turn a styled Etsy photo into a compliant main image. AiArter's Amazon white background tool does that last step for 4 credits.
- Same rules as Amazon: Handmade listings use the standard Amazon product image requirements.
- Main image: pure white background, product fills 85%, whole product shown once, no props, text, logos or watermarks.
- Size: 500–10,000 px on the longest side; 1,000+ px for zoom; 2000×2000 is the safe target.
- Formats: JPEG (preferred), PNG, TIFF, non-animated GIF.
- Other images: lifestyle, scale, process and personalization shots are all fine.
- Count: Amazon recommends at least 6 images plus a video.
What are the image requirements for Amazon Handmade?
The same as for any Amazon listing. Amazon's Handmade program page says approved makers create listings through the standard listing process and add the Handmade classification, and Amazon's product image guide in Seller Central sets the rules for every listing. We read both in October 2026.
| Rule | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| File formats | JPEG (recommended), TIFF, PNG, non-animated GIF | Amazon product image guide |
| Minimum size | 500 px on the longest side | Amazon product image guide |
| Size for zoom | 1,000 px or more on the longest side | Amazon product image guide |
| Maximum size | 10,000 px on the longest side | Amazon product image guide |
| Color | RGB preferred; at least 72 dpi | Amazon product image guide |
| Main image background | Pure white, RGB 255,255,255 | Amazon product image guide |
| Product fill | About 85% of the frame | Amazon product image guide |
| Number of images | At least 1 compliant main image; 6+ images and a video recommended | Amazon product image guide |
| AI-generated people | Photorealistic synthetic people must be tagged in image metadata | Amazon product image guide |
Amazon's product image rules for Handmade listings were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
The full rules, with examples, are in our Amazon product image requirements guide; the free Amazon image checker tests a file against them in your browser.
Does Amazon Handmade require a white background?
Yes, for the main image. Amazon's current image guide requires a pure white background for main images and allows lifestyle main images only for a limited number of product types. Handmade isn't listed as an exception.
Amazon's Handmade Seller Style Guide from 2016 said a white background was preferred but a neutral one (grey, beige, wood, watercolour paper) was acceptable. That guide is still online but predates the current rules, and sellers on Amazon's forums report Handmade listings suppressed for non-white main images. Use pure white to be safe.
What size should Amazon Handmade photos be?
2000×2000 pixels, square, saved as a high-quality JPEG. That clears the 1,000-pixel zoom threshold with room to spare, matches the square image block on the detail page, and stays well under the 10,000-pixel maximum.
| Image | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main image | 2000×2000, pure white | Product fills about 85% |
| Lifestyle and detail images | 2000×2000 | Square keeps the gallery even |
| Infographic or size chart | 2000×2000 | Text large enough to read on a phone |
| Minimum accepted | 500 px on the longest side | Too small to zoom; avoid |
Etsy-sized photos (often 2000×1600 or 3000×2250) are a different shape. Crop or extend them to square before uploading; the free Amazon image resizer does it in your browser.
What can the other Amazon Handmade images show?
Almost anything that helps a buyer understand a handmade piece: the item in use, its scale, the materials, the making process and personalization options. The extra slots are where Handmade sellers show what makes the piece handmade.
| Slot | Shot | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main image on pure white | Required; shows in search |
| 2 | Lifestyle: the piece styled in a real setting | Emotion and context |
| 3 | Scale: in a hand, on a person or next to a known object | Prevents size returns |
| 4 | Close-up of materials, grain, stitching or glaze | Shows the craft |
| 5 | Personalization options (fonts, colors, sizes) | Fewer messages and mistakes |
| 6 | Process: the piece being made in your workshop | Builds trust in handmade |
| 7 | Packaging or gift wrap, if offered | Gift buyers look for it |
All images still can't show reviews or star ratings, unsupported claims, or Amazon logos and badges. Our Amazon lifestyle images and Amazon secondary images guides cover the extra slots in more detail.
Can you use Etsy photos on Amazon Handmade?
For the extra slots, usually yes once they're resized to square. For the main image, only if it's already on pure white; a styled Etsy thumbnail on wood or linen will need a white-background version.
- Pick your clearest photo of the whole piece.
- Replace the background with pure white (RGB 255,255,255).
- Crop so the piece fills about 85% of the square frame.
- Export at 2000×2000 as a JPEG.
- Use your styled Etsy photos as slots 2 onward, resized to square.
AiArter's white background tool does steps 2 to 4 in one go: it cuts out the product, places it on pure white, centres it and returns a 2000×2000 image for 4 credits. Going the other way, its AI background generator puts a white-background product into a styled scene for 8 credits, keeping the product itself exactly as photographed.

Frequently asked questions
Do Amazon Handmade listings need lifestyle photos?
They aren't required, but they help. Handmade buyers want to see scale, texture and the piece in a real setting, so use at least one lifestyle image after the white main image.
Can I use the same photos for each variation?
Each color or size should have its own main image showing that exact variation on white.
Does Amazon Handmade have its own image rules?
No. Amazon says Handmade products are listed through the standard listing process, so the standard Amazon image requirements apply.
Does the Amazon Handmade main image need a white background?
Yes. The main image needs a pure white (RGB 255,255,255) background. Lifestyle shots go in the other slots.
What size should Amazon Handmade images be?
2000×2000 px square. The minimum is 500 px on the longest side and 1,000 px turns on zoom.
How many photos should an Amazon Handmade listing have?
Amazon recommends at least 6 images plus a video. Use them for lifestyle, scale, detail, personalization and process shots.
Can I show my workshop or process on Amazon Handmade?
Yes, in the extra image slots. Process shots help show the piece is handmade.
Can Amazon Handmade images include text?
Not the main image. Extra images can include short labels, such as personalization options or dimensions.
What file formats does Amazon Handmade accept?
JPEG (recommended), PNG, TIFF and non-animated GIF.
