Amazon Lifestyle Images: What They Are, the Rules and Ideas by Category

Amazon lifestyle images are secondary photos that show your product in a real setting or in use, instead of on white. They can't be the main image; they go in slots 2 to 9. Use two or three per listing at 2000×2000 px, show true scale with hands or people, and keep props clearly separate from the product.

The main image tells shoppers what the product is. Lifestyle images answer the next question: what will it look like in my kitchen, on my desk, in my hand? This guide covers what counts as a lifestyle image, which slots to use, the rules that still apply, scene ideas by category, how to show scale, and how to make them without a full photo shoot. For the slot-by-slot plan of the whole gallery, see our guide to Amazon secondary images.

The short version
  • Secondary slots only. The main image must be the product alone on pure white.
  • Two or three per listing is usually right: one early (slot 2 or 3) and one or two later.
  • Show scale honestly with hands, people or familiar objects next to the product.
  • Accuracy rules still apply: the right color and variant, no fake badges, no claims you can't support, and no props that look included.
  • Size: 2000×2000 px square, the same as the rest of the gallery, with the product large in the frame.

What are Amazon lifestyle images?

Photos of the product in a realistic context, either placed in a setting (a lamp on a bedside table) or being used (a hand pouring from a kettle). They're different from infographics, which add text and callouts, and from detail shots, which zoom in on materials. Amazon doesn't use "lifestyle image" as a formal category; it's the name sellers and designers use for these secondary photos.

TypeWhat it showsExample
Setting shotThe product placed where it lives, no people.A candle on a marble bathroom shelf.
In-use shotHands or a person using the product.Hands slicing bread on the cutting board.
Scale shotThe product next to a body or familiar object.A backpack worn by a person, showing its height.
Mood shotThe feeling or occasion the product fits.A gift box under a tree for the holidays.

Which Amazon image slots should be lifestyle images?

Put your strongest lifestyle image in slot 2 or 3 and one or two more after your infographics. Shoppers swipe on mobile, and an early lifestyle image is often the first time they picture the product in their own life. Don't fill every slot with lifestyle shots, though; dimensions, features and what's in the box need their own images.

Amazon accepts up to 9 images in most categories, and the first several show without clicking. Our secondary images plan lays out what goes in each slot, and Amazon infographic images covers the text-based slots.

What are the rules for Amazon lifestyle images?

Lifestyle images don't need a white background, but they must still represent the product accurately and follow Amazon's general image rules. Rules can vary by category, so check your category style guide in Seller Central.

  • Show the right product: the same color, variant, size and pack count the listing sells.
  • Make props obviously props. If the scene includes items that don't ship with the product (the plants next to the planter, the coffee in the mug), they shouldn't be mistaken for included parts. When in doubt, add a short "not included" note.
  • No Amazon badges or logos, such as "Amazon's Choice" or "Best Seller", and no claims you can't support, such as medical or "#1" claims.
  • Keep it appropriate: no nudity or offensive content; swimwear and underwear categories have their own model rules.
  • Same size and quality as the rest of the gallery: at least 1,000 px on the longest side for zoom, ideally 2000×2000, sRGB JPEG.
  • Keep the product big. A beautiful room where the product is a speck in the corner doesn't help on a phone screen.

Amazon's secondary image rules were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

How do you show scale in Amazon lifestyle images?

Put something of known size next to the product: a hand, a person, or an everyday object. "Smaller than expected" is one of the most common complaints in reviews, and a scale image prevents it better than any dimension in the bullets.

  • Hands are the simplest and cheapest scale reference, and don't need a model release for a face. Use clean, neutral hands without distracting jewelry.
  • People are best for anything worn or carried: bags, apparel, backpacks, furniture you sit on.
  • Everyday objects work for small items: a phone, a coffee mug, a pen or a coin next to the product.
  • Keep proportions true. Don't use wide-angle phone lenses close up, which make products look bigger, and never resize the product inside a composite to look larger than it is.
Pair the scale shot with a dimensions image

A lifestyle image shows scale; a dimensions graphic proves it. Use both. Make the dimensions image on white with clear measurement lines, and keep the lifestyle image free of text so it reads as a real moment.

Should you use models in Amazon lifestyle images?

Only where the product needs a body to make sense: apparel, bags, wearables and anything sized to a person. For most other products, hands are enough. Hiring models adds cost, model releases and reshoot risk when you change a color. If you use people, keep the product as the focus: cropping at the shoulders or showing only hands keeps attention on what you sell.

Put your own product photo into a lifestyle scene: marble counter, wooden table, bathroom shelf, living room and more. The product stays exactly as you shot it.

How to make Amazon lifestyle images without a photo shoot

Take one clean photo of the product and place it into a generated background. This works well for setting shots, where the product sits in a scene. It doesn't replace in-use or worn shots, which still need real hands or people. An image-to-image generator can also build a new scene from your product photo; check that the label, color and shape survive before you use it.

  1. Shoot a sharp source photo in soft daylight, at the angle you want the product seen in the scene (slightly above for things on a table, straight on for things on a shelf).
  2. Choose a scene that fits the buyer: a bathroom shelf for skincare, a wooden table for kitchenware, dark luxury for jewelry and watches.
  3. Check the result as a shopper would: does the light direction match, does the product sit on the surface rather than float, is its size believable?
  4. Check accuracy: label, color and shape must match the real product exactly.
  5. Export at 2000×2000 and view it at phone size before uploading.

Common mistakes with Amazon lifestyle images

  • The product is too small. On a phone, a wide room shot turns your product into a dot. Crop in.
  • Props steal attention. Bright flowers or busy patterns pull the eye away from the product.
  • Wrong variant in the scene. Showing the blue one on a listing for the green one leads to returns.
  • Scenes that don't match the buyer. A luxury penthouse for a budget dorm product feels off.
  • Inconsistent style. Five different lighting moods across the gallery looks cobbled together. Keep a consistent look.

Making Amazon lifestyle images with AiArter

AiArter cuts your product out of your own photo and keeps it as it is; only the background is generated, so labels, colors and shape stay true.

  • Lifestyle scenes (8 credits): the AI background generator has 10 presets (Studio, Marble counter, Wooden table, Outdoors, Beach, Living room, Bathroom shelf, Pastel color, Dark luxury, Holiday) or describe your own scene.
  • White main image (4 credits): pure white, centered at about 85% of a 2000×2000 frame, for slot 1. See our Amazon product image requirements for the main image rules, and run slot 1 through our free Amazon image checker before you upload.
  • Infographics and dimension images: the design templates help lay out text-based slots.
  • Bulk: up to 50 photos per batch, one ZIP download, failed photos not charged.

It doesn't generate models or put clothing on a person, so worn and in-use shots still need a real photo.

Frequently asked questions

What are lifestyle images on Amazon?

They're secondary listing images that show the product in a real setting or being used, rather than on a white background. They help shoppers picture the product in their own life and understand its size and purpose.

Can the Amazon main image be a lifestyle image?

No. The main image must show the product alone on a pure white background, filling about 85% of the frame. Lifestyle images go in slots 2 to 9.

How many lifestyle images should an Amazon listing have?

Two or three is usually right: one in slot 2 or 3 and one or two later in the gallery. The other slots are better used for features, dimensions, close-ups and what's in the box.

Can I use AI-generated backgrounds for Amazon lifestyle images?

Yes, as long as the image represents the product accurately. Keep the real product photo, with the correct color, label and size, and make sure props aren't mistaken for included items. Avoid generating the product itself.

What size should Amazon lifestyle images be?

The same as the rest of the gallery: at least 1,000 px on the longest side so zoom works, and 2000×2000 px square is the safe target. Export as an sRGB JPEG.

Do I need models for Amazon lifestyle photos?

Only for products that need a body to make sense, such as clothing, bags and wearables. For most products, hands or everyday objects show scale and use well enough, without the cost of a model.
