Squarespace image size, in short: upload images 2500 pixels wide, which Squarespace calls ideal for most images; under 1500 px wide they may look blurry. Use JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP in sRGB, keep each file under the 20 MB limit (500 KB or less loads faster) and crop to the shape of the space it fills. Favicons are the exception: 100–300 px square.
More on this topic: Marketplace image requirements, every guide in one place.
Squarespace resizes everything you upload, so you never need exact pixel dimensions. What you do control is the width you start from, the file weight and the shape, because banners, section backgrounds and store grids all crop images to fit their containers. This guide collects Squarespace's official numbers in one place, then covers product images, banners, logos and favicons, and how to stop important parts of a photo being cropped off.
- Width: 2500 px is ideal for most images; 1500 px is the practical minimum.
- Formats: .jpg, .png, .gif or .webp only. No animated WebP, and Email Campaigns doesn't accept WebP.
- File size: 20 MB maximum and 120 megapixels maximum; Squarespace recommends 500 KB or less.
- Color: RGB with an sRGB profile. DPI doesn't matter on the web.
- Products: up to 100 images per product; edit them all to one aspect ratio before uploading.
What size should images be for Squarespace?
2500 pixels wide for most images. Squarespace's help center describes that width as ideal, warns that images under 1500 px wide may look blurry, and says exact dimensions aren't required because it resizes images automatically. Height depends on the shape you need, so a 16:9 banner would be 2500×1406 and a square product photo 2500×2500.
When you upload, Squarespace stores up to seven versions of the image at 100, 300, 500, 750, 1000, 1500 and 2500 px wide, and serves the one that suits the visitor's screen. That's why going wider than 2500 px adds nothing on the page: the largest version served is 2500 px.
| Image | Recommended size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Most images (image blocks, galleries) | 2500 px wide | 1500–2500 px wide recommended for image blocks |
| Full-width banner or section background | 1500–2500 px wide, landscape | Always cropped somewhat on phones |
| Product images | 2500 px wide, same ratio for every product | Square (2500×2500) is the simplest |
| Blog and collection featured images | 1500–2500 px wide | Thumbnails crop to the layout's shape |
| Site logo | No exact size required | Start larger rather than smaller |
| Favicon (browser icon) | 100–300 px square, PNG, under 100 KB | Displays at 16×16 px |
| Social sharing image (Facebook) | At least 200×200 px | Squarespace's stated Facebook minimum |
Squarespace's image widths, file limits, formats and store settings were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
What is the Squarespace image file size limit?
20 MB per image, and no more than 120 megapixels. Squarespace recommends keeping images at 500 KB or less so pages load quickly. A full-resolution camera photo is often several megabytes, so resize it to 2500 px wide first, then compress it. Our free image compressor shrinks files in your browser without uploading them anywhere.
For product pages there's a second guideline: Squarespace suggests keeping each page under 5 MB in total. With ten 500 KB images you're already at 5 MB, which is one reason not to use every one of the 100 image slots a product allows.
Which image formats does Squarespace support?
JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP. Files such as PDF, PSD and DOC can't be used as images, and HEIC photos from an iPhone aren't on the list either, so convert them first.
| Format | Use it for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, product shots | Text in JPGs often looks blurry |
| PNG | Logos, graphics with text, transparency | Large files for photos |
| WebP | Photos and transparency at small file sizes | Not supported in Email Campaigns; no animated WebP |
| GIF | Simple animations | Large files, limited colors |
Squarespace also converts uploaded images to WebP by default to speed up your site. You can switch this off in its image settings, and images revert to their original format within 24 hours. Because you can't edit a file after it's uploaded, keep your originals on your computer. For a fuller comparison, see JPG vs PNG vs WebP; to convert iPhone photos, see how to convert HEIC to JPG.
What size should Squarespace product images be?
Use 2500 px wide images, all in the same aspect ratio. Squarespace's product image guide doesn't give a pixel size of its own (it points to the general 2500 px guidance) but it does recommend editing images to the ratio you want before uploading. Square 2500×2500 photos are the easiest choice because they look the same on store pages, in product blocks and in social shares.
- Up to 100 images per product, but keep the page under about 5 MB.
- The first image is the featured image shown on store pages, product blocks and summary blocks. To use a different one, hover over it in the product editor and click Set as thumbnail.
- Variant images can be attached to each color or size, so shoppers see the right photo when they pick an option.
- Alt text is added from the image's ••• menu > Edit Metadata, up to 200 characters.
- Product blocks keep the featured image's original shape, so crop before uploading if you need a particular one.
How to set the product image aspect ratio
The shape of store page images is a store-wide style setting, not a per-product one. Where it lives depends on your store page type:
| Store page type | Store page grid | Product details page |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced (version 7.1) | Aspect Ratio in the Products: Layout section | Products: Gallery section |
| Classic | Product Item Size and Product Image Auto Crop | Product Gallery Size and Product Gallery Auto Crop |
On advanced store pages, images are cropped automatically to the ratio you pick. Match your photos to it and nothing important gets trimmed. To get every photo to one shape, our free square image maker pads photos to 1:1 without cutting the product, and the free image cropper locks to 4:5, 3:2 and other ratios.

1500 to 2500 pixels wide, in a landscape shape. That's the guidance in Squarespace's banner article, which also says site-wide banners should never be larger than 2500 px because that can cause problems on mobile. In version 7.1 there's no separate banner field: a banner is a section background image in a section at the top of the page.
Banners and section backgrounds always crop to some degree, especially on phones, because the same image has to fill a wide desktop strip and a tall phone screen. Squarespace doesn't publish a single banner height for that reason. These three habits keep the important part visible:
- Keep the subject near the center with plenty of plain background around it. Avoid text, logos or borders baked into the edges.
- Set the focal point. Hover over the image in the editor, then drag the small circle onto the part that must stay visible. Squarespace centers the crop there.
- Adjust the section. In the section's Format settings you can change the section height and choose Full Bleed or Inset width, which changes how much of the image shows.
If your photo is too narrow for a wide banner, cropping it further only makes it lower resolution. Our AI image extender adds matching background to the sides instead, so the product stays whole. For the shapes behind these crops, see the aspect ratio guide.
Squarespace recommends adding overlay text with its own tools rather than saving it into the picture. Live text stays sharp, is readable by search engines and doesn't get cut off when the banner crops on a phone. If an image must contain text, save it as PNG, since text in JPGs often blurs.
What size should a Squarespace logo and favicon be?
Squarespace doesn't require exact logo dimensions and advises starting with a larger image, because small logos pixelate when resized; a transparent PNG a few hundred pixels tall is a sensible starting point. Some older version 7.0 templates cap the logo height, so check your template if it looks small.
The favicon (browser icon) has firm numbers: it displays at 16×16 px but works best uploaded between 100×100 and 300×300 px, as a PNG under 100 KB. Squarespace also notes that Google wants favicons in multiples of 48 px square (48, 96, 144 and so on). Our free favicon generator turns a logo into a set of square icon files, and how to make a favicon walks through it.
Image settings that cause upload problems
- CMYK color. CMYK is for print and won't display correctly in most browsers. Export in RGB with an sRGB profile.
- File names with symbols. Use only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. Accents, question marks, percent signs and ampersands may fail to upload.
- Unsupported files. HEIC, PSD, TIFF and PDF need converting to JPG, PNG or WebP.
- Huge camera files. Over 20 MB or 120 megapixels won't upload; resize to 2500 px wide with the free image resizer.
- DPI worries. DPI and PPI don't affect how images display on the web, so there's no need to change them. More on that in how to change image DPI.
If you also sell on other platforms, the numbers differ: see Shopify product image size and website image sizes for general site images.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for Squarespace?
2500 pixels wide for most images. Squarespace calls that width ideal, says images under 1500 px wide may look blurry, and resizes uploads automatically, so exact dimensions aren't required.
What is the maximum image size on Squarespace?
20 MB per file and 120 megapixels. Squarespace recommends 500 KB or less per image so pages load quickly.
Does Squarespace support WebP?
Yes, as a static image. Animated WebP isn't supported and Email Campaigns doesn't accept WebP. Squarespace also converts uploads to WebP by default, which you can turn off in its image settings.
What size should Squarespace product images be?
2500 px wide, all in the same aspect ratio, such as 2500×2500 squares. Set the store's image aspect ratio to match so nothing is cropped unexpectedly.
How many images can a Squarespace product have?
Up to 100, though Squarespace suggests keeping a page under 5 MB, so most products are better served by 5 to 10 well-chosen photos.
Why is my Squarespace banner image cropped?
Banners and section backgrounds always crop to fit the screen, especially on phones. Keep the subject central, set the focal point and adjust the section height to control what shows.
Does DPI matter for Squarespace images?
No. Squarespace says DPI and PPI don't affect how images display on the web. Only the pixel dimensions matter.
Can I upload iPhone HEIC photos to Squarespace?
HEIC isn't one of the supported formats (JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP), so convert HEIC photos to JPG before uploading.
