Gumroad Cover Image Size (2026): 1280×720 Covers, 600×600 Thumbnails and File Types

Gumroad cover image size, in short: Gumroad recommends cover images of 1280×720 pixels (16:9) at 72 DPI or more, and thumbnails of at least 600×600 pixels (square). Covers can be PNG, JPEG, GIF or MOV files or a YouTube or Vimeo link, must be under 50 MB, and you can add up to 8 per product. Images over 4096 px on the long side are resized.

More on this topic: Marketplace image requirements, every guide in one place.

Gumroad sells digital products, so the cover and thumbnail do the job that product photos do on a marketplace: they're the first thing a buyer sees on the product page, in Discover and on your profile. This guide covers the official sizes, how Gumroad displays covers of different shapes, what to put on each cover, and how to make covers and thumbnails from the files you already have. The free image cropper locks to 16:9 and 1:1, the two shapes Gumroad uses.

The short version
  • Cover: 1280×720 px (16:9), at least 72 DPI.
  • Thumbnail: at least 600×600 px, square. Optional, shown in Library, Discover and your profile.
  • File types: PNG, JPEG, GIF or MOV, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. Under 50 MB.
  • Up to 8 covers per product; Gumroad suggests an image first, video in the description.
  • Big images over 4096 px on the long side are resized; GIFs aren't, so animation is kept.

What size should a Gumroad cover image be?

1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels tall, at 72 DPI or more, which is Gumroad's rule of thumb for image covers. That's a 16:9 landscape shape, the same as a YouTube thumbnail, and it fills the cover frame edge to edge on the product page.

Gumroad's cover and thumbnail guidance in its help center were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Because 1280×720 is a minimum rule of thumb, many creators export 1920×1080 for extra sharpness on large and high-density screens; it's the same 16:9 shape. DPI only matters for print, so 72 DPI is fine; what counts on screen is the pixel size. See 16:9 aspect ratio for all the common 16:9 sizes.

Do Gumroad covers have to be 16:9?

No. Gumroad shows each cover in a frame that matches its own shape. Wide covers like 1280×720 fill the frame edge to edge, and tall covers, such as a phone video, are shown tall rather than stretched or cropped, but never taller than 80% of the browser window.

Cover shapeHow Gumroad shows itUse it for
16:9 landscape (1280×720)Fills the frame edge to edgeMost products; the safe default
Square (1:1)Shown at its own shapeArt packs, presets, social templates
Portrait (4:5, 9:16)Shown tall, capped at 80% of the window heightPhone screen recordings, ebook covers
Mixed shapesPage shifts slightly between coversAvoid; keep covers one shape

Gumroad's advice is to keep multiple covers the same shape for the best look, since the page shifts a little as buyers move between covers of different shapes. Pick 16:9 unless your product is clearly better shown tall.

What size is a Gumroad thumbnail?

At least 600×600 pixels, square. Thumbnails are optional and separate from covers; when you add one, it appears in customers' libraries, in Gumroad Discover and on your profile page. Without one, your product still has a cover, but a dedicated square thumbnail lets you design for that small square tile instead of relying on a crop of a wide cover.

  • Design for small: the thumbnail is shown much smaller than the cover. Use one bold image and at most three or four words.
  • Export larger than the minimum: 1200×1200 px stays crisp on high-density screens.
  • Keep a margin: leave space around text so it isn't tight to the edges.
  • Match the cover: same colors and title style so buyers recognise the product across Discover and the product page.

To turn a wide cover into a square thumbnail without cutting off the title, pad it to a square with the free square image maker, or crop the key part with the cropper locked to 1:1.

What should you put on a Gumroad cover?

Show what the buyer gets, not just a title card. Digital products are hard to picture, so the covers that convert best are previews of the actual content.

Gumroad recommends using an image as the first cover and putting videos in the product description, because the carousel's dots that tell buyers more covers exist are hidden while a video plays. For mockup ideas, see digital product mockups, which applies to Gumroad just as well.

Before-and-after covers for presets

Selling presets, filters or editing templates? A split before-and-after image is the clearest first cover. The free before and after image maker exports side-by-side or slider-style images in your browser.

How do I make a 1280×720 cover from my files?

Start from a page, screenshot or mockup, fit it into a 16:9 frame, add a short title, and export at 1280×720 or larger. You don't need design software for any step.

  1. For a PDF product, turn a page into an image with the free PDF to JPG converter.
  2. If your image is square or tall, give it a 16:9 shape: pad it with the free resizer (custom size 1280×720 or 1920×1080), or let the AI image extender generate matching background at 1920×1080 for 8 credits.
  3. Add a short title or benefit with the free add text to image tool. Keep it to a few words.
  4. Check it at the size it displays on a phone; if the text is hard to read, make it bigger or shorter.
  5. Export as PNG for flat graphics and text, JPG for photo-heavy covers.
