How to Increase Shopify Conversion Rate (2026): Product Page Checklist

How to increase Shopify conversion rate: find the step where shoppers drop off in Shopify's conversion funnel, then fix that step. Most gains come from product pages with 5 to 8 sharp, zoomable images, shipping costs shown before checkout, visible reviews and returns, a page that loads its main image in under 2.5 seconds, and a layout tested on a phone.

Conversion rate is the share of sessions that end in an order. It's the number that tells you whether your store turns visitors into buyers, and it's usually cheaper to raise than traffic. There's no universal "good" rate, because it varies with price, niche and where visitors come from, so the useful comparison is your store against itself last month. This guide covers how to find the leak, then a product page checklist, images, speed, trust, shipping and mobile.

The short version
  • Measure first: Shopify's analytics show sessions, added to cart, reached checkout and completed. The biggest drop is where to start.
  • Product page: clear title, price, variants, add-to-cart button above the fold on mobile, and a description that answers size, material and delivery.
  • Images: 5 to 8 photos at about 2048×2048 with zoom: main shot, angles, details, scale and in use.
  • Speed: aim for Google's "good" Core Web Vitals: main content in 2.5 s or less, INP 200 ms or less, CLS 0.1 or less.
  • No surprises: shipping cost, delivery time and returns shown on the product page, not first revealed at checkout.

How do I find out why my Shopify store isn't converting?

Open Analytics in Shopify admin and look at the conversion funnel: sessions, sessions with an add to cart, sessions that reached checkout, and sessions that completed checkout. The step with the steepest drop tells you what to fix.

Where shoppers drop offWhat it usually meansFix first
Visit, but no add to cartThe product page doesn't convincePhotos, price, description, reviews
Add to cart, but no checkoutDoubt about total cost or deliveryShow shipping and delivery time earlier
Checkout started, not completedSurprise costs or friction in checkoutShipping rates, payment options, fewer fields
Mobile far worse than desktopLayout or speed problem on phonesTest the page on a real phone

Also compare products. Sort your product report by sessions and look for pages with plenty of visits but few orders: those are the cheapest wins, because the traffic is already there.

What should a high-converting Shopify product page have?

Everything a shopper needs to decide without leaving the page or messaging you. Work through this checklist on your top five products by traffic first.

  1. Clear title that says what the product is, not a brand slogan.
  2. Price, sale price and any per-unit price next to the title.
  3. Variant pickers (size, color) with a photo that changes to match each color.
  4. Add to cart button visible without scrolling on a phone, in a color that stands out.
  5. Short benefit summary of 3 to 5 lines above the fold; full details lower down.
  6. Specs: dimensions, materials, weight, what's in the box, care instructions.
  7. Shipping and returns in one line near the button, with a link to the full policy.
  8. Reviews with star rating near the title and full reviews further down.
  9. Size guide or FAQ for anything where fit or compatibility is a question.

For copy structure, see our Shopify product description template. If writing descriptions is slow, the listing copy writer drafts them from the facts you give it, which you then edit.

What images help Shopify conversion?

Use 5 to 8 sharp, consistent images per product at about 2048×2048, with zoom turned on, so shoppers can see the product as well as they would in a shop. Images are where online buyers make up for not being able to touch the product.

ImageWhat it showsWhy it helps
1. MainProduct alone on a clean backgroundClear in collection grids and ads
2. AnglesBack, side, topAnswers "what does the rest look like?"
3. DetailTexture, stitching, ports, finishShows quality up close
4. ScaleIn a hand, on a person, next to an objectPrevents size surprises and returns
5. In useLifestyle sceneHelps shoppers picture owning it
6. VariantsEach color or optionAvoids guessing
7. VideoShort clip of the product in useShows movement, fit or function

Most current Shopify themes let you choose how product images zoom (lightbox or hover) in the theme editor; check that it's on, and that a tap opens a full-screen view on mobile. Keep the same background, lighting and framing across products so collection pages look tidy. For exact dimensions, see our Shopify product image size guide, or resize a photo in your browser with the free Shopify image resizer.

Get a clean main image and matching lifestyle shots for every product page, from the photos you already have. Your product is kept as shot; only the background changes.

Does page speed affect Shopify conversion rate?

Yes. A product page that's slow to show its main image or jumps around as it loads loses shoppers before they see the product. Aim for Google's "good" Core Web Vitals thresholds, which Shopify's web performance reports measure from real visitors.

MetricWhat it measuresGood (Google)
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)How fast the main content, often the product image, appears2.5 s or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)How fast the page responds to taps and clicks200 ms or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)How much the layout jumps while loading0.1 or less

Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds and Shopify's web performance reports were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

  • Compress images. Upload product photos around 2048 px and a few hundred KB, not 8 MB straight from a camera. The free image compressor shrinks and converts up to 20 images at once in your browser.
  • Remove apps you don't use. Many apps add scripts to every page, even after you stop using them; check your theme code after uninstalling.
  • Limit homepage sliders and autoplay video on pages where they don't help sell.
  • Check after changes. Shopify's web performance report shows how a theme update or app install affected speed; Google PageSpeed Insights tests a single page.

Our website image sizes guide lists sizes for banners, collection images and blog images so nothing is larger than it needs to be.

How do I make a Shopify store look trustworthy?

Show shoppers who you are, what happens if something goes wrong, and what other buyers thought. A first-time visitor has never heard of your store, so every trust signal has to be visible, not buried in the footer.

  • Reviews with photos where possible, from a reviews app, shown on product pages.
  • Clear policies: returns, refunds and shipping on their own pages, linked near the add to cart button. The free return policy generator and shipping policy generator give you a template to edit.
  • Contact details: an email address, a contact page and, if you have one, a business address.
  • An About page with real photos of the people or workshop behind the store.
  • Familiar payment options such as Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay, shown at checkout.
  • Honest claims: no fake countdown timers, invented stock counts or made-up reviews; shoppers notice, and fake reviews can break consumer protection law.

How should Shopify stores show shipping costs?

Show shipping cost and delivery time on the product page and in the cart, before checkout. An unexpected shipping charge at the last step is one of the most common reasons shoppers abandon checkout.

  1. Pick a simple rule you can state in one line: flat rate, free over a threshold, or free on everything.
  2. Set up the matching shipping rates in Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
  3. Add the line to the product page near the button ("Free shipping over $50. Ships in 1–2 business days").
  4. Repeat it in an announcement bar and in the cart.
  5. Set the free-shipping threshold a little above your average order value, so it encourages adding one more item.

How do I improve Shopify conversion on mobile?

Open your own product pages on a phone and try to buy something; for many stores most visits come from phones (your Analytics sessions-by-device report shows your split), and problems that are invisible on a laptop are obvious on a 6-inch screen.

  • The main image, price and add to cart button should all be visible without scrolling.
  • Text at least 16 px so it's readable without zooming.
  • Buttons and variant pickers large enough to tap accurately.
  • Images swipe smoothly and zoom with a tap.
  • Express checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) appear where your theme supports them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?

There's no single good number, because conversion rate depends on price, niche, device and traffic source. A store selling $20 items to returning customers will convert very differently from one selling $500 items to cold ad traffic. Compare your store with its own past performance and with the same traffic sources.

How is Shopify conversion rate calculated?

Shopify reports conversion rate as the share of online store sessions that end in an order. Its analytics also show the steps in between: sessions with an add to cart and sessions that reached checkout.

Why do people add to cart but not buy on Shopify?

Most often because of surprise shipping costs, slow delivery times, a missing payment option or a long checkout. Show shipping and delivery on the product page and in the cart, and offer express checkout options.

Does page speed affect sales on Shopify?

Yes. Slow pages lose shoppers before they see the product, especially on mobile. Compress images, remove unused apps, and check Shopify's web performance report after theme or app changes.

How many product images should a Shopify product have?

Five to eight is a good range for most products: a main image, other angles, details, scale, an in-use shot and each variant. Use about 2048×2048 pixels so zoom stays sharp.

Do reviews increase Shopify conversion rate?

Reviews help shoppers who have never bought from you trust the product. Show the star rating near the title and full reviews lower on the page, and collect real reviews by emailing customers after delivery. Never add fake ones.
