A Shopify product description template that works: a one-sentence benefit opening, 3–6 bullet points of specs, a short “how to use” or “who it's for” line, then sizing, care and shipping in collapsible tabs. Keep the visible part to 50–150 words, the SEO title to about 60 characters and the meta description to about 160.
Shopify gives you a blank text box and a lot of freedom, which is why so many store pages end up as one long paragraph or a pasted supplier spec sheet. Below are copy-paste templates for seven product types, how to format them in the Shopify editor, how to use tabs or accordions, and how to fill in the search engine listing fields so the page shows up properly in Google.
- Structure: benefit sentence, spec bullets, use line, then details in tabs or accordions.
- Length: 50–150 words visible above the fold; put the rest in collapsible sections.
- SEO fields: page title up to 70 characters (about 60 shows in Google), meta description around 160, short URL handle.
- Formatting: use the editor's bullet list and headings, not bold text everywhere or pasted images of text.
- Don't forget alt text on every product image: it's set separately in the media section.
What should a Shopify product description include?
Everything a buyer needs to decide without messaging you: what it does, the key specs, who it's for, sizing or compatibility, care, and what's in the box. On your own store you also need to build trust, because shoppers don't have a marketplace's familiar layout and review system to lean on.
| Section | Where it goes | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit opening (1–2 sentences) | Top of the description | Says why it matters |
| Spec bullets (3–6) | Right below the opening | Facts buyers filter by |
| Use or audience line | After the bullets | Helps them picture it |
| Size guide or dimensions | Tab or accordion | Prevents returns |
| Materials and care | Tab or accordion | Answers practical questions |
| Shipping and returns | Tab or accordion (same on every product) | Removes last doubts |

How do you format a product description in Shopify?
Use the description editor's built-in formatting: paragraphs for the opening, the bulleted list button for specs, and headings sparingly. Avoid pasting from Word or Google Docs directly, which can bring hidden styles along; paste as plain text and format in Shopify instead.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
- In Description, type or paste your opening sentence as plain text.
- Select your spec lines and click the bulleted list button.
- Use bold only for the label in each bullet (“Material:”), not whole sentences.
- If you need custom HTML, use the editor's Show HTML (<>) button, and keep it simple.
- Save, then preview on your phone. Most of your shoppers will see it there first.
How do you add tabs or accordions to Shopify product pages?
Most current Shopify themes, including the free Dawn theme, have a collapsible content (or collapsible tab) block you can add to the product page in the theme editor. Each block has a heading and content. That content can be fixed text, a page, or a product metafield, so each product can show its own size guide or ingredient list.
- Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
- Switch to the Products > Default product template.
- In the product information section, click Add block > Collapsible row (the name varies by theme).
- Give it a heading such as “Size guide” or “Care”.
- For text that differs per product, create a product metafield in Settings > Custom data, connect the block to it, then fill it on each product page.
Menus and block names change between themes and Shopify updates, so if you can't find the option, check your theme's documentation.
Type your product details and get two Shopify-ready description drafts that open with the main benefit and use only your facts.
Write a description7 days free · 50 credits · No credit cardHow do you set the SEO title and meta description in Shopify?
Scroll to the bottom of the product page in Shopify admin and click Edit on the Search engine listing section. There you can set the page title, meta description and URL handle separately from the product title and description.
| Field | Limit | What to write |
|---|---|---|
| Page title | Up to 70 characters; about 60 shows in Google | Main keyword + product + brand |
| Meta description | About 160 characters recommended | Benefit + key specs + a reason to click |
| URL handle | Keep it short | product-type-key-feature, lowercase, hyphens |
Shopify's search engine listing field limits were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Example for a fictional moisturizer:
- Page title: Niacinamide Moisturizer for Combination Skin, 50 ml | Fernway
- Meta description: A lightweight gel-cream with niacinamide and squalane for combination skin. Fragrance-free, 50 ml. Free UK delivery over £30.
- URL handle: niacinamide-moisturizer-combination-skin
If you leave these empty, Shopify fills them from your product title and the start of your description, which is why that first sentence matters twice. For the title itself, see how to write product titles.
Don't forget image alt text and image size
Alt text describes each product image for screen readers and image search. In Shopify, click a product image in the media section and choose Add alt text. Write what the image shows, such as “Sage linen pillow cover on a grey sofa”, not a list of keywords. Our product image alt text guide has examples per category, and Shopify product image size covers the photo specs that keep the page sharp and fast.

- Specs are in a bulleted list with real numbers.

- SEO page title is about 60 characters with the main keyword near the start.
- Meta description is about 160 characters and reads like an ad, not a list.
- Every product image has descriptive alt text.
- You've checked the page on a phone.
When you have a large catalog, write one template per collection and fill it from a spec spreadsheet. AiArter's listing copy writer can draft titles, bullets and descriptions in your brand kit's tone, and the product description generator writes two Shopify options for about 5 credits. Both stick to the details you give them, so read each draft before it goes live.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a product description in Shopify?
Open the product in Shopify admin, write a one-sentence benefit opening in the Description box, add 3 to 6 spec bullets with the list button, and a short use line. Put sizing, care and shipping in collapsible tabs using your theme editor.
How long should a Shopify product description be?
Keep the visible part to about 50 to 150 words for most products. Technical products can be longer, but move the extra detail into tabs or accordions so the page stays easy to scan.
How do I add tabs to Shopify product descriptions?
Most current themes, including Dawn, have a collapsible row block for the product page. Add it in Online Store, Themes, Customize, and connect it to a metafield if the content differs per product.
What is the meta description limit in Shopify?
Shopify recommends about 160 characters for the meta description so it isn't cut off in search results. Set it under Search engine listing at the bottom of the product page.
Does Shopify product description affect SEO?
Yes. Google reads the description to understand the page, and Shopify uses its opening as the meta description if you leave that field empty. Unique, specific descriptions do better than copied supplier text.
Can I use AI to write Shopify product descriptions?
Yes. AI can draft descriptions from your product details in seconds. Give it accurate facts, check every claim, and edit the draft so it matches your brand voice before publishing.
Enter the product name and details, choose Shopify, and get two options that open with the main benefit. About 5 credits per pair.
