eBay Listing Tips (2026): Titles, Item Specifics, Photos, Pricing and Returns

eBay listing tips that matter most in 2026: use all 80 title characters with the words buyers search, fill in every item specific, add 8 to 12 clear photos (up to 24 are free), price from sold listings, turn on Best Offer with auto-accept and auto-decline limits, offer fast handling with tracking, and accept returns for 30 days.

eBay search, called Best Match, decides which listings show first. It looks at how well a listing matches the search, how complete it is, its price and shipping, and how buyers respond to it. That means most of what helps your listing rank is also what helps it sell. This guide goes field by field through the listing form, with a checklist at the end.

The short version
  • Title: up to 80 characters. Brand, item, model, key specs, size and condition, in the words buyers type. No unrelated brand names.
  • Item specifics: fill every one that applies, not just the required ones. Buyers use them as filters.
  • Photos: up to 24 per listing at no charge, at least 500 px, about 1600 px recommended, no text or borders.
  • Price: check sold listings, not asking prices. Best Offer with auto limits saves back-and-forth.
  • Shipping and returns: short handling time, tracking, and a 30-day return policy make buyers more comfortable bidding.

How do I write a good eBay title?

Use as much of the 80 characters as you can with the exact words a buyer would search: brand, item type, model, key features, size, color and condition. eBay titles are matched word for word against searches, so every useful word you leave out is a search you won't appear in.

BrandNikeThe most common first search word

Key specsMen's US 10, whiteSize and color are the main filters
Condition or extrasNew in boxAnswers the first question

Result: "Nike Air Max 90 Running Shoes Men's US 10 White CN8490-100 New in Box" (69 characters). Check length with the free listing character counter, which knows eBay's 80-character limit.

  • Skip filler words like "L@@K", "wow", "amazing" and "rare" unless the item really is rare. Nobody searches for them.
  • No keyword spam. eBay's search policy bans adding brand names or terms that don't describe your item ("not Gucci", "like Apple").
  • Use the subtitle carefully. The optional subtitle (up to 55 characters) costs an extra listing fee, so it's rarely worth it on low-priced items.
  • Write it like a label, not a sentence. No need for punctuation between terms.

For general title formulas across marketplaces, see how to write product titles and listing character limits.

Do item specifics matter on eBay?

Yes. Item specifics are the structured details (brand, size, color, material, model, condition) that buyers use to filter search results, and a listing with blank specifics disappears as soon as a buyer ticks a filter. Some categories make certain specifics required before you can publish.

  1. Pick the most specific category; eBay shows the specifics for that category.
  2. Fill every required specific first (marked in the form).
  3. Then fill the recommended ones too. eBay suggests the values buyers use most.
  4. Use eBay's suggested values where they fit ("Multicolor" rather than your own word), so filters match.
  5. Add custom specifics for anything buyers ask about that the form doesn't cover.
  6. If you sell a product with a catalog entry (a UPC, ISBN or MPN), match it to the eBay catalog so the standard details fill in automatically, then check they're right.

How many photos should an eBay listing have?

Use 8 to 12 for most items and up to 24 for used, complex or collectible ones. eBay allows 24 photos per listing at no extra cost, requires at least 500 pixels on the longest side and recommends about 1600 pixels. Photos can't have added text, borders or watermarks.

  • Main photo: the whole item, face-on, on an uncluttered background. It's what shows in search.
  • All sides: front, back, sides, top and bottom.
  • Labels and numbers: brand tag, model number, serial plate, size label.
  • Every flaw: its own close-up in good light. This prevents "not as described" returns.
  • Scale and contents: next to a ruler or hand, and everything included laid out.

How do I price items on eBay?

Price from what the same item actually sold for recently, not what other sellers are asking. Search the item, then use the Sold items filter (under Show only, or in Advanced search) to see completed sales with prices and dates. Terapeak product research in Seller Hub shows more sales history and is free for sellers.

FormatBest forTip
Buy It Now (fixed price)Most items, especially ones with a known market valuePrice near recent sold prices
Buy It Now + Best OfferUsed, vintage, higher-priced itemsSet auto-accept and auto-decline limits
AuctionRare or in-demand items where buyers competeStart low enough to attract early bids
  • Best Offer with limits. Set an auto-accept price (offers at or above it are accepted automatically) and a minimum (offers below it are declined automatically). You only handle offers in between.
  • Count the costs. Final value fees, shipping, packaging and any promotion fee all come out of the sale. The free profit margin calculator shows what you keep.
  • Revisit stale listings. If an item gets views but no sales after a few weeks, compare it with sold prices again, or send an offer to watchers.

Should I use eBay Promoted Listings?

They can help in crowded categories, but treat them as a cost of sale. With the General strategy, you choose an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the total sale amount, and you pay it only if the item sells within 30 days of a buyer clicking your ad. The fee is on top of normal selling fees, so build it into your price.

eBay's title length, photo limits, Promoted Listings rates and Top Rated Plus terms were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

What shipping should I offer on eBay?

Offer a short handling time, tracked shipping and either free shipping built into the price or calculated shipping so distant buyers aren't overcharged. Shipping cost is part of the price buyers compare in search results.

  • Handling time: same day or 1 business day if you can. It's one of the conditions for eBay's Top Rated Plus fee discount and badge, together with free 30-day returns.
  • Free vs calculated: free shipping is simplest for small, light items; calculated shipping is fairer for heavy or bulky ones.
  • Weigh and measure the packed item. Carriers charge for size as well as weight; the free dimensional weight calculator shows which one applies.
  • Upload tracking within your handling time; buying labels through eBay does this automatically.

What return policy should I offer on eBay?

Offering 30-day returns makes most buyers more comfortable, and free 30-day returns are needed for Top Rated Plus. eBay lets you choose no returns, 30 days or 60 days, and whether you or the buyer pays return shipping.

Return optionProsCons
No returnsNo change-of-mind returnsBuyers can still return items not as described; may deter buyers
30 days, buyer paysReassures buyers at low costSome returns to process
30 days, free returnsNeeded for Top Rated PlusYou pay return shipping
60 daysUseful in the holiday seasonLonger exposure to returns

Even with a no-returns policy, eBay's Money Back Guarantee lets buyers return items that don't match the listing, which is another reason to photograph and describe every flaw. If you sell on your own site as well, the free return policy generator writes a matching policy page.

Describe condition honestly

Choose the right condition (New, Open box, Used, For parts) and add a condition note such as "Light scratches on the back, see photos 6–8." Honest condition notes reduce returns and negative feedback more than any other change.

What should an eBay description include?

The facts a buyer needs that aren't already in the title, specifics or photos: condition in words, what's included, measurements, compatibility and anything you tested. Keep it short and scannable; many buyers read on a phone, where eBay shows a summary first.

  1. One-line summary of what the item is.
  2. Condition in plain words, pointing to the flaw photos.
  3. What's included and what isn't ("No charger included").
  4. Measurements or size details.
  5. Compatibility, tested functions or authenticity details.

The listing copy writer can draft a description from your notes, which you then check against the item.

eBay listing checklist

  1. Title uses the 80 characters with brand, item, model, size and condition.
  2. Most specific category chosen.
  3. Every required and recommended item specific filled.
  4. 8 to 12 photos (more for used items), main photo on a plain background, no text or watermarks.
  5. Price checked against sold listings; Best Offer limits set if used.
  6. Short handling time and tracked shipping.
  7. Return policy set (30 days recommended).
  8. Condition and flaws described in words and photos.

Cleaner eBay photos with AiArter

AiArter keeps the item pixels from your photo and replaces only the background, which suits eBay, where photos must show the real item.

  • White or light grey main photo (4 credits), centered in a 2000×2000 frame, above eBay's 1600 px recommendation.
  • Upscale (3 credits) an older, small photo so it stays sharp on zoom.
  • Bulk: up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download.

Leave flaw close-ups unedited. Trial images carry a small mark, and eBay bans watermarks, so use a paid plan for photos you list. If listings still aren't selling after these fixes, our guide to why products aren't selling walks through the diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an eBay title be?

eBay titles can be up to 80 characters. Use as many as you can with words buyers search for, such as brand, model, size, color and condition. An optional subtitle of up to 55 characters costs extra.

What are item specifics on eBay?

Item specifics are structured details like brand, size, color, material and model that buyers use to filter search results. Some are required in certain categories. Filling every one that applies keeps your listing visible when buyers use filters.

How many pictures can you put on an eBay listing?

Up to 24 photos per listing at no extra cost. Photos need to be at least 500 pixels on the longest side, and eBay recommends about 1600 pixels. Most items do well with 8 to 12 photos.

Should I turn on Best Offer on eBay?

Best Offer works well for used, vintage and higher-priced items where buyers expect to negotiate. Set an auto-accept price and an automatic decline minimum so you only handle offers in between.

How do I find what an item sold for on eBay?

Search for the item and use the Sold items filter to see completed sales with prices and dates. Terapeak product research in Seller Hub shows more sales history.

Do I have to accept returns on eBay?

You can choose a no-returns policy, but eBay's Money Back Guarantee still covers items that arrive not as described. Offering 30-day returns reassures buyers, and free 30-day returns plus fast handling are needed for Top Rated Plus.
