Chairish photo requirements, in short: every photo must be a JPEG or PNG at least 575 pixels on its width or height. Each listing needs at least 2 photos and can have up to 18. Chairish automatically removes the background of the first photo on most listings to show the piece on white; the rest stay as you upload them. No watermarks; shoot in natural light, not direct sun.
More on this topic: Marketplace image requirements, every guide in one place.
Chairish is a curated marketplace for vintage and designer furniture, lighting, art and decor, and its listing review is stricter than a general marketplace. Photos that are blurry, cluttered, filtered or watermarked can hold a listing back. This guide sets out the official requirements, what the automatic white background means for your first photo, the shot list for furniture, lighting and art, and how to prepare files. The free marketplace image resizer and image cropper help you hit the size and framing.
- Size: at least 575 px on the width or height; aim for 2000 px or more.
- Format: JPEG or PNG.
- Count: minimum 2 photos, maximum 18 per listing.
- First photo: Chairish removes its background on most listings, so make it a clean, complete view of the piece.
- Banned or discouraged: watermarks, filters, clutter and blurry photos.
What are Chairish's photo requirements?
JPEG or PNG files, each at least 575 pixels on the width or height, with 2 to 18 photos per listing. Chairish's photo guide adds a set of style rules covering angles, lighting, clutter, damage, watermarks, filters, scale, texture and maker's marks.
| Requirement | Chairish rule | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| File format | JPEG or PNG | JPEG for photos; keep files under a few MB |
| Minimum size | 575 px on width or height | 2000 px or more on the long side |
| Photos per listing | At least 2, up to 18 | 8–12 for most furniture |
| First photo | Background removed automatically on most listings | Full piece, straight on, nothing touching it |
| Other photos | Left exactly as uploaded | Room shots, details and condition |
| Watermarks | Not allowed | Leave your logo off |
| Filters | Discouraged | Correct color only |
| Lighting | Natural light, avoid direct sun | Overcast daylight or a bright room |
Chairish's help center blocks automated reading, so we checked these rules through its published photo guide as shown in search results. Confirm them in the listing form before you upload a large batch.
Chairish's photo size, count and editing rules were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
What does Chairish do to your first photo?
On most listings, Chairish automatically removes the background of the primary (first) image and places the piece on a clean white background. It leaves every other photo exactly as you uploaded it, with no enhancements or edits.
- Shoot the first photo for cutting out: the whole piece in view, nothing overlapping it, on a plain background that contrasts with it.
- Clear the area: remove accessories, rugs and objects touching the piece, since an automatic cutout may keep or chop them.
- Glass and acrylic: Chairish suggests a white background behind clear pieces to improve clarity and cut reflections.
- Check the result: look at the listing preview; legs, chair spindles and thin lamp arms are where automatic cutouts usually fail.
Usually not for Chairish, because it does it for the first photo. If you also sell the same piece on your own site or other marketplaces, a consistent white image of your own is still useful; see how to make a product photo background white.
What photos should a Chairish listing have?
A clean first photo of the full piece, then several angles, close-ups of materials and upholstery, maker's marks, a scale or room shot, and every flaw. Chairish's own guide asks sellers to capture multiple angles, the entire item, damage, texture and marks, and complete sets.

How do you photograph furniture for Chairish?
Pull the piece away from the wall, shoot at the height of its middle with the camera level, and use soft daylight from the side. Keep the camera straight so verticals stay vertical; tilted lines make a piece look crooked.
- Clear the area around the piece and clean it.
- Place it a meter or more from the wall, with a window to one side.
- Set the phone on a tripod at the piece's mid-height, level.
- Shoot the first photo straight on, with space around the whole piece.
- Shoot the three-quarter view, sides, back and details.
- Photograph upholstery, joints, marks and every flaw close up.
- Add a room shot with a familiar object for scale.
If verticals still lean, straighten them with the free rotate tool.
How should you prepare photo files for Chairish?
Crop, straighten, correct exposure and white balance, and export JPEGs around 2000 px on the long side. Don't add borders, text or watermarks, and avoid filters that change the color of wood, upholstery or finishes.

| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Clutter on or around the piece | Clear accessories and rugs before the first photo |
| Part of the piece cut off | Leave space around the whole item |
| Direct sun stripes | Natural light without direct sun |
| Watermark or logo | Remove it; Chairish doesn't allow them |
| Warm filter on wood | Correct white balance instead |
| No damage photos | Photograph every flaw you describe |
How do you photograph lighting and art for Chairish?
Photograph lamps and chandeliers switched off for the first photo, so the cutout shows the true shape and finish, then add a second photo switched on. Photograph art square on, in even light, with the frame included and no glare on the glass.
- Lamps: shade straight, cord tidied behind, bulb in place; add the socket, label and base underside.
- Chandeliers and pendants: hang them if you can; a top-down shot of the canopy helps.
- Framed art: two lights at 45° to the sides, or a bright window to one side, so the glass doesn't reflect the room.
- Unframed canvas: add the edges and the back of the canvas, where labels and signatures often are.
- Scale: a photo on a wall above a sofa or console tells buyers more than dimensions alone.
