Threads image size, in short: post JPEG or PNG images 1080–1440 px wide, up to 8 MB each. 1080×1350 (4:5) fills the most feed space; 1080×1080 (1:1) is the safe square. Threads accepts shapes up to 10:1 and resizes images to 320–1440 px wide. Carousels hold up to 20 images or videos, and videos can run up to 5 minutes (1 GB).

Meta doesn't publish a Threads size chart in its help center. The firmest numbers come from the Threads API documentation for developers, which sets the limits every upload has to meet, and from the official @threads account, which announced the 20-item carousel. This guide uses those sources, marks where the numbers are our recommendation rather than Meta's, and shows how to resize product photos so they look right in the feed. If you post the same image to Instagram, our Instagram post size guide covers the overlap.
- Best size: 1080×1350 (4:5) for single images; 1080×1080 for squares.
- Files: JPEG or PNG, 8 MB or less.
- Width: 320 to 1440 px; larger or smaller images are scaled to fit.
- Shape: anything up to 10:1, but very tall or wide images get cropped in the feed preview.
- Carousels: up to 20 images or videos per post.
- Video: MP4 or MOV, up to 5 minutes and 1 GB; 9:16 recommended.
What is the best image size for Threads?
1080×1350 pixels (4:5) for a single image, because portrait images take up more of the phone screen than squares or landscapes. Use 1080×1080 (1:1) for product shots and quote graphics. Meta doesn't name a recommended size, so these are our recommendations within its official limits.
| Post type | Size in pixels | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait image | 1080×1350 | 4:5 | Most feed space; our default |
| Square image | 1080×1080 | 1:1 | Product shots, quotes, carousels |
| Landscape image | 1080×566 or 1440×754 | 1.91:1 | Wide scenes; smallest in the feed |
| Vertical image | 1080×1920 | 9:16 | Allowed; may be cropped in the feed preview |
| Video | 1080×1920 | 9:16 | Meta's recommended video shape |
| Carousel | 1080×1350 or 1080×1080 | 4:5 or 1:1 | Keep every slide the same shape |
To turn an existing photo into these shapes, the free Instagram image resizer makes 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16 versions in your browser, which suit Threads too.
What are the official Threads image limits?
JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB, between 320 and 1440 pixels wide, with an aspect ratio of up to 10:1. Those are the limits in Meta's Threads API documentation, which we read in October 2026.
| Spec | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Image formats | JPEG, PNG | Threads API docs |
| Maximum image file size | 8 MB | Threads API docs |
| Image width | 320–1440 px (scaled to fit) | Threads API docs |
| Image aspect ratio | Up to 10:1 | Threads API docs |
| Video formats | MOV, MP4 | Threads API docs |
| Video length | Up to 5 minutes | Threads API docs |
| Video file size | Up to 1 GB | Threads API docs |
| Recommended video ratio | 9:16 | Threads API docs |
| Items per carousel | 2–20 | Threads API docs; @threads announcement |
Threads' image and video limits were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
The API limits apply to scheduling tools and integrations; the app follows the same broad rules but Meta doesn't document them separately. If an upload fails in the app, the usual causes are the same: a file over 8 MB or an unusual format such as HEIC or WebP from a design tool.
Does Threads crop images?
Not the image itself, but the feed preview can be. Single images display at close to their own shape, while very tall or very wide images are shown cropped in the feed until someone taps to open them. Keep the product and any text in the middle of the frame.
- Portrait 4:5 and square 1:1 usually display without visible cropping.
- Tall 9:16 images can be trimmed in the feed preview; keep the subject centered.
- Panoramas (up to 10:1) are allowed but show as a thin strip in the feed.
- Carousels show side by side as you scroll; mixed shapes look messy, so match them.
Keep text away from the edges and at least 40 px tall on a 1080 px wide image so it stays readable on a phone. Threads posts already carry up to 500 characters of text, so the image doesn't need to repeat the caption.
How many images can you post on Threads?
Up to 20 images or videos in one carousel post. The API documentation sets a range of 2 to 20 items for a carousel, and the official @threads account announced the 20-item limit for the app.
For product posts, 3 to 6 images is usually enough: the hero shot, a detail, scale and the product in use. Keep every slide the same size, ideally 1080×1350 or 1080×1080.
What size is a Threads profile picture?
Meta doesn't publish one. Upload a square image of at least 400×400 pixels with your logo or face centered; it's shown as a small circle, so leave margin around the edges. If you also use the picture on Instagram, the same file works for both.
What video size should you use on Threads?
1080×1920 (9:16), MP4 or MOV, under 5 minutes and 1 GB. Meta's API documentation recommends 9:16 for video and accepts almost any shape from 0.01:1 to 10:1.
| Setting | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Size | 1080×1920 (9:16) |
| Format | MP4, H.264, AAC audio |
| Length | Up to 5 minutes; 15–60 seconds performs best for product clips |
| File size | Under 1 GB |
| Frame rate | 30 fps |
The same vertical clip usually works on TikTok, Reels and Shorts; see our TikTok video dimensions and Instagram Story size guides.
How do you resize a product photo for Threads?
- Pick the shape: 4:5 for a single post, 1:1 for a carousel of products.
- Resize to 1080 px wide (1080×1350 or 1080×1080).
- Save as JPEG at high quality; convert any HEIC or WebP files.
- Check the file is under 8 MB (a 1080 px JPEG usually is, by a wide margin).
- Post, then check the feed preview on a phone.
The free image resizer and image compressor do this in your browser, and the aspect ratio calculator works out the pixel sizes for any ratio. If cropping a square product photo to 4:5 would cut off part of the product, AiArter's AI image extender adds matching background to reach the new shape instead, for 8 credits per size.
Extend a product photo to 4:5 or 9:16 without cropping the product.

Frequently asked questions
Do Threads and Instagram share the same profile picture?
They can be different. Whichever you use, upload a square image with the subject centred, since both show it as a small circle.
Can I post a GIF or WebP on Threads?
Meta's Threads API lists JPEG and PNG for images. Convert other formats to JPEG before posting.
What happens if my image is wider than 1440 px?
Threads scales it down to fit its 320–1440 px width range, so there's no benefit to uploading larger files.
What size should Threads images be?
1080×1350 (4:5) for single images and 1080×1080 for squares. Meta's limits are 320 to 1440 px wide and up to 8 MB.
What is the maximum file size for a Threads image?
8 MB, in JPEG or PNG, according to Meta's Threads API documentation.
How many photos can you post on Threads?
Up to 20 images or videos in one carousel.
Does Threads crop photos?
The image isn't cropped, but very tall or wide images are cropped in the feed preview. Portrait 4:5 and square images display fully.
How long can a Threads video be?
Up to 5 minutes and 1 GB, in MP4 or MOV.
Is the Threads image size the same as Instagram?
Close: 1080×1350 and 1080×1080 work on both, so you can reuse the same files.
Can I post a PNG with a transparent background on Threads?
PNG is accepted, but transparent areas may not display the way you expect; add a solid background first.
