Social media profile picture size, in short: upload a square image of at least 400×400 pixels and it will work almost everywhere. The official numbers are 320×320 for a Facebook Page, 400×400 for X (2 MB max), at least 400×400 for LinkedIn (8 MB max) and 400×400 for a LinkedIn Page logo (3 MB max). YouTube shows the picture at 98×98 and accepts files up to 15 MB. Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Threads don't publish a size, so a 1080×1080 square is a safe file for all of them.
Every network shows the picture as a small circle, so the shape matters more than the pixel count: a square file with the logo or face in the middle 70% survives every crop. Below are the sizes each platform publishes, where it publishes nothing, and how to make one master file that works everywhere. All figures come from each platform's own help or ads pages, checked in October 2026 (sources are named in the table).
- One file for everything: a 1080×1080 square JPG or PNG, under 2 MB, with the subject centered.
- Published sizes: Facebook Page 320×320; X 400×400; LinkedIn 400×400 minimum; LinkedIn Page logo 400×400 recommended.
- File limits: X 2 MB, LinkedIn Page logo 3 MB, LinkedIn profile 8 MB, YouTube 15 MB.
- Not published: Instagram, TikTok (organic), Pinterest and Threads give no pixel size.
- Circle crop: keep logos and faces inside the middle of the square, away from the corners.
What size should a profile picture be on each platform?
Use the platform's own number where one exists, and a 1080×1080 square where it doesn't. The table lists what each network publishes and the file we'd upload.
| Platform | Official size or limit | Shown as | File we'd upload | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page | 320×320 for best quality; displays at 176×176 (computer) and 196×196 (phone) | Circle | 1080×1080 PNG for logos | Facebook Help Centre |
| Not published | Circle | 1080×1080 JPG | — | |
| X (Twitter) | 400×400 recommended; JPEG, GIF or PNG; 2 MB max | Circle | 400×400 or larger, under 2 MB | X Help Center |
| LinkedIn (personal) | 400×400 to 7680×4320; PNG or JPG (no GIF); 8 MB max | Circle | 1080×1080 JPG | LinkedIn Help |
| LinkedIn Page logo | 268×268 minimum, 400×400 recommended; PNG or JPEG; 3 MB max | Square | 400×400 PNG | LinkedIn Help |
| YouTube | Renders at 98×98; JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG (no animated GIF); 15 MB max | Circle | 800×800 or larger | YouTube Help |
| TikTok | Not published for accounts; TikTok ad profile photo is 98×98, under 50 KB | Circle | 1080×1080 JPG | TikTok Ads help |
| Not published | Circle | 1080×1080 JPG | — | |
| Threads | Not published | Circle | Same file as Instagram | — |
The profile picture sizes, formats and file limits in this table were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Where a cell says “not published”, we looked for a size in the platform's help center and didn't find one. Third-party charts often quote numbers such as 110×110 or 165×165 for these networks; those are display sizes people have measured, not upload rules, and uploading at that size makes the picture look soft on high-density phone screens.
What is the Facebook profile picture size?
For a Facebook Page, Meta says the profile picture should be 320×320 pixels for best quality. It displays at 176×176 on computers and 196×196 on smartphones, cropped to a circle. Meta also notes that pictures with a logo or text may look better as a PNG.
The same help page gives the Page cover size: 851×315 pixels loads fastest, and the minimum is 400×150. Our Facebook cover photo size guide shows where the profile picture overlaps the cover on phones, which is the part people get wrong most often.
What is the Instagram profile picture size?
Instagram doesn't publish one. Its help center explains how to change the picture, and notes that you can import the one you use on Facebook or keep both in sync through Accounts Center, but it gives no pixel size. Upload a 1080×1080 square: it's the size Instagram already uses for square posts, it stays sharp on every phone, and it gives the circle crop plenty of pixels to work with.
If you sync your picture between Facebook and Instagram, design for the tighter of the two crops and test it on both apps before you commit. For feed and story sizes, see Instagram post size.
What is the X (Twitter) and LinkedIn profile picture size?
X recommends 400×400 pixels and accepts JPEG, GIF or PNG files up to 2 MB. The same help article recommends 1500×500 for the header image and warns that about 60 pixels at the top and bottom of the header can be cropped on some screens.
LinkedIn accepts a personal profile photo between 400×400 and 7680×4320 pixels, as a PNG or JPG up to 8 MB; GIFs aren't supported. Its recommended background photo is 1584×396. A LinkedIn Page logo is a separate image with stricter limits: at least 268×268, 400×400 recommended, PNG or JPEG, and no more than 3 MB. Our X image size and LinkedIn image sizes guides cover posts and banners.
What is the YouTube and TikTok profile picture size?
YouTube's channel branding help says the profile picture renders at 98×98 pixels and accepts JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG files (no animated GIFs) up to 15 MB. It doesn't name an upload size, so upload a square of at least 800×800 so the picture stays sharp wherever YouTube shows it larger. The same page sets the banner at 2048×1152 minimum and 2560×1440 recommended; see YouTube banner size.
TikTok doesn't publish an account profile picture size. The only official number is for ads: in TikTok Ads Manager, the optional profile photo on a non-Spark in-feed ad is 98×98 pixels, JPG or PNG, under 50 KB, with the key element inside the central 66×66 pixels. For your account itself, upload a 1080×1080 square.
What is the Pinterest and Threads profile picture size?
Neither publishes one. Pinterest's help center does give a size for the business profile cover (the wide image above your profile): at least 800×450 pixels, with a horizontal 16:9 image recommended. For the round profile picture itself, use a 1080×1080 square. Threads uses its own profile picture, separate from Instagram's if you want; the same 1080×1080 file works. Our Pinterest pin size and Threads image size guides cover the post sizes.
How do you make one profile picture that works everywhere?
- Start square and large: 1080×1080 pixels. If your logo file is wide, place it on a square canvas rather than stretching it.
- Keep the subject in the middle 70%. The circle crop cuts the corners, and some apps add a ring for stories or live status.
- Use a solid background. A transparent PNG can show black or white behind it depending on the app's theme.
- Export twice: a PNG for logos and text, and a JPG under 2 MB for X and anywhere with tight limits.
- Check it at 40 pixels wide. That's roughly how small it appears beside comments. If the logo is unreadable, use a simpler mark.
The free square image maker pads a wide logo onto a square canvas, the circle crop tool previews the round crop, the image cropper cuts an exact 1080×1080, and the image compressor brings a file under 2 MB. All four run in your browser without an account.
Shops with one maker behind them often do better with a face on Instagram and TikTok, where people follow people, and the logo on Facebook Pages, LinkedIn Pages and Pinterest, where buyers look for the brand. Keep the same background color on both so the accounts still look related.

Usually because the file was smaller than the space it's shown in on a high-density screen, or because the app recompressed a large, detailed file. Fixes that work on most platforms:
- Upload at least 400×400, and preferably 1080×1080, never the 110 or 165 pixel display sizes quoted in some charts.
- Keep fine text out of the picture; it turns to mush at 40–100 pixels wide.
- Save logos as PNG and photos as high-quality JPG; avoid re-saving a JPG many times.
- Stay under the platform's file limit so the upload isn't refused or heavily compressed.
Every platform's post, story and banner sizes are in our social media image sizes hub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best profile picture size for all social media?
A 1080×1080 square, JPG or PNG, under 2 MB, with the logo or face in the middle. It meets X's 400×400 recommendation, LinkedIn's 400×400 minimum and Facebook's 320×320, and it's sharp on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, which publish no size.
Is the Facebook profile picture 170×170 or 320×320?
Meta's help page says a Page profile picture should be 320×320 for best quality and displays at 176×176 on computers and 196×196 on phones. Upload at 320×320 or larger.
What is the maximum file size for a profile picture?
It varies: 2 MB on X, 3 MB for a LinkedIn Page logo, 8 MB for a LinkedIn profile photo and 15 MB on YouTube. A 1080×1080 JPG is usually well under 1 MB.
Why is my logo cut off in the profile picture?
Every network crops the square to a circle. Put the logo on a square canvas with margin on all sides, keeping it inside the middle 70% of the image.
Can I use a transparent PNG as a profile picture?
You can, but apps fill the transparent area with their own background, which may be black in dark mode. Add a solid background color before uploading.
