Facebook cover photo size: Meta recommends uploading 851×315 pixels as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, with a minimum of 400×150. For a sharper result on modern screens, upload a 2× version such as 1702×630. Facebook crops the cover differently on computers and phones, so keep text and logos in the middle of the image.
The cover photo is the widest piece of free advertising space your business Page has, and it's the image most often ruined by cropping: a headline cut off on mobile, a logo hidden under the profile picture, a product squeezed into a thin strip. This guide covers the upload size, how the cover displays on desktop and mobile, a safe area that works on both, and how to make a wide cover from a square product photo.
- Upload size: 851×315 px (Meta's recommendation), or 1702×630 px for high-density screens. Same 2.7:1 shape.
- Minimum: 400×150 px. Smaller covers are rejected or look blurry.
- File: sRGB JPG under 100 KB loads fastest; PNG often looks better for logos and text.
- Crop: desktop and mobile show different parts of the image. Keep key content in the center and away from the bottom-left, where the profile picture overlaps on phones.
- Text: keep it short and large; a cover is read in about a second.
What is the Facebook cover photo size in 2026?
Upload Facebook cover photos at 851×315 pixels, or a larger image with the same proportions. That's the size Meta's Help Center recommends for the fastest loading. On high-resolution phone and laptop screens, an 851-pixel image can look slightly soft, so many designers upload at double size (1702×630) and export as a compressed JPG or PNG.
| Spec | Value | Source / note |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended upload | 851×315 px | Meta Help Center |
| High-resolution upload | 1702×630 px | Same ratio at 2×; common designer practice |
| Minimum | 400×150 px | Meta Help Center |
| Best format | sRGB JPG under 100 KB | PNG for logos and text |
| Desktop display | Wide, full-bleed, left-aligned | Meta lists a 16:9 ratio for computers |
| Mobile display | Full-bleed, left-aligned | Meta lists a 2.4:1 ratio for phones |
| Profile picture overlap | About 40 px on mobile | Bottom-left of the cover |
Facebook's cover photo sizes were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
A note on the numbers you'll see elsewhere: many guides quote the cover as displaying at 820×312 on desktop and 640×360 on mobile. Those were measured from older layouts, and Meta's own help page now describes the display by aspect ratio instead. Facebook adjusts its layout often, so the reliable approach isn't chasing exact display pixels; it's designing with a generous center safe area and checking the preview on both a computer and a phone.
How does the Facebook cover display on desktop vs mobile?
On a computer, the cover spans the full width of the Page header. On a phone, the cover is shown at a different shape, the edges can be trimmed, and the profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner. The same upload therefore shows slightly different areas on each device.
| Computer | Phone | |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Full width of the Page header | Full width of the screen |
| What gets cropped | Top and bottom edges may be trimmed | Left and right edges may be trimmed |
| Overlaps | Profile picture sits below / beside the cover | Profile picture overlaps ~40 px, bottom-left |
| Design rule | Don't put text at the very top or bottom | Don't put text at the far left or right |
What is the safe area for a Facebook cover photo?
Keep text, logos and the product inside the central area of the image, roughly the middle 70% of the width and 80% of the height. On an 851×315 canvas that's about 600×250 pixels in the center; on a 1702×630 canvas, about 1200×500. Use the outer edges for background only: sky, texture, a table surface, a color gradient.
On phones the profile picture sits over the lower-left part of the cover. A logo or offer placed there will be partly hidden. Put your main message center or center-right.
Most design apps let you add guide lines. Set the canvas to 1702×630, add vertical guides at about 250 and 1450 px and horizontal guides at about 65 and 565 px, and keep anything important between them.
How to make a Facebook cover photo for a business Page
You can make a good cover with free tools you probably already use. The steps are the same in Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop or a phone design app:
- Create a 1702×630 canvas (or 851×315). Add the safe-area guides above.
- Pick one image. A wide product scene, your shop, or your product on a clean brand color. One clear subject beats a collage.
- Place the subject center or center-right, leaving the bottom-left clear.
- Add at most one short line of text: what you sell or the current offer. Use a large, bold font with strong contrast.
- Export as JPG (or PNG if it's mostly text and flat color). Keep the file small.
- Upload and reposition. On your Page, choose Edit cover photo, upload, and drag to adjust before saving.
- Check on your phone. Open the Page in the Facebook app and confirm nothing is cut off or hidden.
Our design templates include covers and sale banners you can drop a product photo into; set the canvas to the sizes above before exporting. A brand kit keeps colors and fonts the same across your cover, posts and ads.
How do I make a square product photo fit a wide Facebook cover?
Extend the background instead of stretching or cropping the product. A square product photo is about 2.7 times too narrow for a cover. Cropping it to 851×315 slices off the top and bottom of the product; stretching distorts it. There are two clean fixes:
- Plain color background (free): place the photo on a cover-sized canvas filled with a matching color. Our free marketplace image resizer accepts custom sizes, so you can pad a photo to 1702×630 with a color you pick. Works best when the photo already has a plain background.
- Extended scene (AI): the AI image extender continues the scene around the product. Pick the website banner size (1920×1080) so the scene is filled out sideways, then crop a 2.7:1 strip around the product with the free resizer's custom size (8 credits for the extension). This works best when the product doesn't fill the whole height of the original photo. The product itself stays exactly as photographed.

- One message. The cover is seen for a second. "Handmade soy candles" works; three lines of copy don't.
- Show the product. A real product shot tells visitors what you sell faster than a logo.
- Match your ads. Use the same colors and style as your Facebook ad images so people recognize you.
- Update it seasonally. Swap in a holiday or sale cover, then switch back.
- Don't rely on the cover for links. Put links in the cover photo's description and the Page's action button.
- Check contrast. Text over a busy photo is hard to read; add a soft gradient behind it.
- Background color. Neutral or brand colors keep the profile picture and header clean; see choosing a background color.
Why does my Facebook cover photo look blurry?
Usually because the upload is too small, was saved with heavy compression, or contains small text. Facebook recompresses covers, and text suffers most. Fixes:
- Upload at 1702×630 instead of 851×315.
- Use PNG for covers that are mostly text, logos or flat color.
- Make text larger; thin fonts blur first.
- If your source photo is small, enlarge it first with the AI image upscaler (3 credits) rather than stretching it in a design app.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Facebook cover photo?
Meta recommends 851×315 pixels as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, with a minimum of 400×150. Many designers upload 1702×630, the same shape at double size, so it looks sharp on high-resolution screens.
What is the Facebook cover photo size for mobile?
There's no separate mobile upload. The same cover is shown at a different shape on phones, with the sides possibly trimmed and the profile picture overlapping about 40 pixels at the bottom-left. Keep important content in the center.
What is the safe zone for a Facebook cover?
Keep text and logos in roughly the middle 70% of the width and 80% of the height. On a 1702×630 canvas that's about 1200×500 pixels in the center. Avoid the bottom-left corner.
Why does Facebook crop my cover photo?
Facebook displays the cover at different shapes on computers and phones, so part of the image is trimmed on each. Upload at the recommended ratio, keep key content central, and drag to reposition before saving.
Should a Facebook cover photo be JPG or PNG?
JPG loads fastest and is best for photos. PNG often looks sharper for covers with logos, text or flat colors, because it avoids compression blur around edges.
What is the minimum size for a Facebook cover photo?
Facebook cover photos must be at least 400×150 pixels. That's only a floor; at that size the cover looks blurry on most screens, so upload 851×315 or larger.
Extend a square product shot into a wide scene, or put it on a clean brand-color background, then crop it to your cover size.
