Facebook post size, in short: use 1080×1350 pixels (4:5) for a portrait photo post or 1080×1080 (1:1) for a square, saved as JPG. For link posts, Meta asks for a 1.91:1 image of at least 1200×630 (minimum 600×315 for the large preview, 8 MB max). Meta doesn't publish a size for ordinary photo posts, so these recommendations follow its feed ad specs, which put the feed at 4:5 and 1440×1800.
That gap is why size charts disagree: Facebook's help center gives sizes for Page profile pictures, covers and link previews, and the Meta Ads Guide gives sizes for ads, but there is no official page for a normal photo post from a Page or profile. Below we separate what Meta publishes from what we recommend, and show how to size product photos so the feed doesn't crop them. Figures were checked on Meta's help, developer and Ads Guide pages in October 2026.
- Portrait photo post: 1080×1350 (4:5), our recommendation; it fills the most feed height.
- Square photo post: 1080×1080 (1:1), the easiest size to reuse on Instagram and marketplaces.
- Link post image: 1200×630 (1.91:1); 600×315 minimum for the large preview; 8 MB max (Meta developer docs).
- Meta's feed ad spec: 1440×1800 (4:5), JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB.
- Page profile picture: 320×320; cover: 851×315.
What size should a Facebook post be?
For photo posts, 1080×1350 (4:5) or 1080×1080 (1:1). For link posts, 1200×630 (1.91:1). The table marks which numbers are Meta's and which are ours.
| Post type | Size in pixels | Ratio | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo post, portrait | 1080×1350 | 4:5 | Our recommendation, matching Meta's 4:5 feed ad shape |
| Photo post, square | 1080×1080 | 1:1 | Our recommendation; Meta's minimum for 1:1 feed ads |
| Photo post, landscape | 1200×630 | 1.91:1 | Shows smallest in the feed |
| Link post image | 1200×630 or larger | 1.91:1 | Meta developer docs (min 200×200; 8 MB) |
| Feed image ad | 1440×1800 | 4:5 | Meta Ads Guide (JPG or PNG, 30 MB, min width 600) |
| Story | 1080×1920 | 9:16 | See our Facebook story guide |
| Page profile picture | 320×320 | 1:1 | Facebook Help Centre |
| Page cover photo | 851×315 | About 2.7:1 | Facebook Help Centre (min 400×150) |
Meta's published sizes for link previews, feed ads, Page profile pictures and covers were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Does Facebook publish an official post size?
Not for ordinary photo posts. Meta's help center documents Page profile pictures (320×320, shown at 176×176 on computers and 196×196 on phones) and cover photos (851×315, at least 400×150). Its developer documentation covers images in link shares. Its Ads Guide covers ads: the feed image ad is 1440×1800 at 4:5, JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 600 pixels wide, with a 3% aspect ratio tolerance. Meta's Business Help Centre adds recommended minimums for feed ads of 1080×1080 for 1:1 and 1440×1800 for 4:5.
Organic posts appear in the same feed as those ads, so the ad spec is the best official guide to the shape the feed is built around. We recommend 1080 px wide for organic posts because it's sharp on phones and small enough to upload quickly; 1440 px wide is fine too.
Should Facebook posts be square or portrait?
Portrait 4:5 for single photos you want people to stop on, square for product shots you'll reuse. A 4:5 image is 25% taller than a square at the same width, so it takes more of the phone screen as people scroll. Square is the better master if the same photo goes to Instagram, a marketplace listing and a carousel ad, which Meta recommends at 1:1 on Facebook feed.
- 4:5 (1080×1350): lifestyle shots, launches, offers.
- 1:1 (1080×1080): product on white, catalogs, before-and-after pairs.
- 1.91:1 (1200×630): link posts and wide banners only.
- 9:16: belongs in Stories and Reels, not the feed.
What size is a Facebook link post image?
Meta's developer documentation for link shares says to use images of at least 1200×630 pixels for high-resolution screens, and at least 600×315 so the link shows the large image preview. Smaller images still appear, but much smaller. The minimum is 200×200 pixels and the maximum file size 8 MB, and Meta advises keeping close to 1.91:1 so the full image shows without cropping.
The link image comes from your page's og:image tag, not from the post, so set it on your product page or blog post. If you replace the image, Meta caches by URL: use a new image URL and refresh the link in its Sharing Debugger.
When you share a product link, Facebook uses the store's preview image, which is often your first product photo cropped to 1.91:1. A product centered with space on both sides survives that crop; a tight vertical shot gets its top and bottom cut.
Does Facebook crop or compress post images?
Single photos display close to their own shape on phones, but very tall images are trimmed in the feed preview and multi-photo posts are arranged into a grid that crops each photo. Facebook also recompresses uploads, so a soft or heavily compressed file gets softer. To keep product photos sharp:
- Resize to 1080 px wide before uploading instead of uploading a 4000 px phone photo.
- Save as JPG at high quality; keep PNG for graphics with text or logos.
- Keep the product in the middle 80% of the frame so grid crops don't cut it.
- Turn on high-quality uploads in the app's media settings if your version offers it.
- Preview the post on a phone before you boost it.
The free Facebook image resizer makes the 4:5, 1:1 and 1.91:1 versions in your browser, and the image compressor trims file size without visible loss.
How do you resize a product photo for a Facebook post?
Pick the shape first, then the size. A square product photo becomes 4:5 by adding height, and becomes 1.91:1 by adding width. Cropping a square to 1.91:1 cuts almost half of it, which usually removes part of the product. Adding background instead keeps the whole product in view.
AiArter's AI image extender does that: it extends the background of a product photo to a new shape, for 8 credits per size, so one photo becomes a 4:5 post, a 1.91:1 link image and a 9:16 Story without cutting the product.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for a Facebook post?
1080×1350 (4:5) for a portrait photo and 1080×1080 for a square. Meta doesn't publish an organic post size; its feed ads use 4:5 at 1440×1800.
Is 1200×630 still the right Facebook size?
For link posts, yes: Meta recommends at least 1200×630 at 1.91:1. For photo posts it shows small on phones, so use 4:5 or 1:1 instead.
What is the maximum image file size for Facebook?
Meta lists 8 MB for link-share images and 30 MB for feed ad images. A 1080 px JPG is usually under 1 MB.
Can I post a 9:16 image to the Facebook feed?
You can, but tall images get trimmed in the feed preview. Post 9:16 images as Stories or Reels and use 4:5 in the feed.
Do Facebook and Instagram posts use the same size?
Largely: 4:5 and 1:1 work on both, so one 1080×1350 or 1080×1080 file covers both feeds. See our Instagram post size guide for Instagram's 3:4 profile grid.
