Facebook story size, in short: make Stories 9:16 vertical. Meta recommends 1080×1920 px for Page Stories and 1440×2560 px for Story ads. Keep text and logos out of the top 14% and the bottom 20% (35% for image ads), plus 6% at each side. Story ad videos can run 1 second to 3 minutes, but only the first 15 seconds play as one card.
More on this topic: Social media image sizes, every guide in one place.
Facebook Stories sit at the top of the app and fill the whole phone screen, which makes them a good place to show a product big. They're also unforgiving: a square photo turns into a small card on a blurred background, and a price placed near the bottom disappears behind the reply bar or the ad's call-to-action button. Below are Meta's own numbers for organic Stories and Story ads, what each safe zone means in pixels, and how to turn product photos into Stories that fill the frame.
- Shape: 9:16 vertical, full screen.
- Size: 1080×1920 px is Meta's recommendation for Page Story videos; 1440×2560 px for Story ads. Both are 9:16.
- Safe zones: keep words and logos out of the top 14%, the bottom 20% (35% on image ads) and 6% at each side.
- Video length: Page Story videos 3–90 seconds; Story ad videos 1 second to 3 minutes, split into cards after 15 seconds.
- Lifetime: a Story is visible for 24 hours, then moves to your archive.
What size is a Facebook story?
A Facebook Story is a 9:16 vertical frame, and 1080×1920 pixels is the size Meta recommends for Page Story videos, with a minimum of 540×960. For Story ads, Meta's ads guide recommends a larger 1440×2560 pixels, still 9:16. Both fill a phone screen edge to edge; 1440×2560 simply gives more detail on high-resolution phones.

Meta's Facebook Stories image and video ad specs (facebook.com/business/ads-guide) and the Page Stories requirements in Meta's developer documentation were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
A note on sources: Facebook's Help Center doesn't publish dimensions for personal or Page Stories at all. The organic numbers above come from Meta's developer documentation for publishing Page Stories, which is what scheduling tools follow. For a Story you post from the app, a 1080×1920 file is the safe choice. Meta also notes that PNG photo Stories larger than about 1 MB may look pixelated, so export photos as JPG or run a PNG through the free image compressor.
What are the Facebook story safe zones?
Meta asks you to keep the top 14% of a Story free of text and logos, plus the bottom 20% for video and the bottom 35% for image ads, and 6% at each side. Those strips are where the profile name, progress bar, reply box and call-to-action button sit. On a 1080×1920 Story, 14% is about 270 pixels; Meta's video page rounds it to 250.
| Zone | Meta's guidance | On 1080×1920 | On 1440×2560 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 14% | About 250–270 px | About 358 px |
| Bottom, video ads | 20% | About 340–384 px | About 512 px |
| Bottom, image ads | 35% | About 672 px | About 896 px |
| Each side | 6% | About 65 px | About 86 px |
Why two bottom figures? Meta's Stories image ad page says 35%, while the Stories video ad page still quotes 14% top and 20% (340 pixels) bottom. The bigger number leaves room for the call-to-action and ad labels, which take more space on image ads. If one file will run as both an organic Story and an ad, design to the stricter 35%: keep the product and price in the upper-middle of the frame.
On a 1080×1920 canvas, put text, prices and logos between about 270 px from the top and 1250 px from the top, and at least 65 px in from each side. That area is safe on Facebook Stories, Story ads and Instagram Stories. Let the background and the product's surroundings fill the rest.
How long can a Facebook story be?
A Page Story video can be 3 to 90 seconds long, according to Meta's developer documentation, and a reel shared as a Page Story can't exceed 60 seconds. Story ads accept videos from 1 second to 3 minutes. Meta's ads guide says Story ad videos of 15 seconds or less play in full, and longer ones are split into separate Story cards, with up to three shown automatically before the viewer chooses to keep watching.
| Content | Length | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Page Story video | 3–90 seconds | Meta developer docs |
| Reel shared as a Page Story | Up to 60 seconds | Meta developer docs |
| Story ad video | 1 second to 3 minutes | Meta ads guide |
| Story ad played as one card | 15 seconds or less | Meta ads guide |
| How long a Story stays up | 24 hours | Facebook Help Center |
Facebook doesn't publish how long a photo Story stays on screen; it's commonly reported as about five seconds unless the viewer holds it. For product videos, the 15-second card is the useful limit: show the product in the first second and finish your message inside one card. No video yet? You can animate a product photo into a short vertical clip with image to video (15 credits per 5-second clip).
What are the Facebook story ad specs?
Story image ads should be 1440×2560 pixel JPG or PNG files, 9:16, up to 30 MB and at least 500 pixels wide. Story video ads use the same 1440×2560 size as MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB and 1 second to 3 minutes long. Meta's text recommendations are 125 characters of primary text and a 40-character headline.
- Video settings: H.264, square pixels, fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or more.
- Captions and sound: both optional but recommended by Meta.
- Aspect ratio tolerance: 1%. A file that's slightly off 9:16 may be cropped or padded.
- Placements: one 9:16 file can serve Facebook Stories, Instagram Stories and Reels; Reels cover more of the bottom and right edge, so check each placement preview in Ads Manager.
For feed ads and the other Facebook placements, see the Facebook ad image size guide. The Instagram story size guide covers Instagram's version of the same format.
Turn a square product photo into a full-screen 9:16 Story, with AI filling the space above and below your product.
Extend to 9:167 days free · 50 credits · No credit cardHow do I make a product photo fit a Facebook story?
Change the photo to 9:16 before you upload it; otherwise Facebook places it on a background and it looks like a small card. Four ways, from quickest to most polished:
- Crop a tall photo. If you shot vertically with space around the product, crop to 9:16 with the free image cropper.
- Pad it to 1080×1920. The free marketplace image resizer (story preset, or a custom 1080×1920 size) fits the whole photo on a white or colored background.
- Add a headline in the empty space. Padding above and below is a natural place for a product name or offer; the free add-text tool does it in your browser. Keep it inside the safe zone.
- Extend the scene. AI generates more of the setting above and below the product, so a square lifestyle photo becomes a seamless full-screen Story.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a Facebook story?
9:16 vertical. Meta recommends 1080×1920 pixels for Page Story videos and 1440×2560 pixels for Story ads. Both fill a phone screen.
What is the Facebook story safe zone?
Keep text and logos out of the top 14%, the bottom 20% (35% on image ads) and 6% at each side. On a 1080×1920 Story that's roughly the top 270 pixels and the bottom 380–670 pixels.
How long can a Facebook story video be?
Meta's developer documentation gives 3 to 90 seconds for Page Story videos. Story ads accept 1 second to 3 minutes, but videos over 15 seconds are split into separate cards.
What is the file size limit for a Facebook story?
Page photo Stories can be up to 10 MB, and Meta suggests keeping PNGs under about 1 MB. Story image ads allow up to 30 MB and video ads up to 4 GB.
Is the Facebook story size the same as Instagram's?
Yes, both use a 9:16 frame and 1080×1920 works on both. The safe zones are similar, so one file can usually serve both Stories.
Why does my Facebook story look blurry?
Usually because the file is small, heavily compressed, or a large PNG. Upload a 1080×1920 JPG, or 1440×2560 for ads, and avoid stretching a small photo.
How long does a Facebook story stay up?
24 hours. After that it's only visible to you in your story archive, unless you save it elsewhere.
