Instagram ad sizes, in short: Meta recommends 1440×1800 pixels (4:5) for feed image ads and 1440×2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels image ads, as JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Carousel ads take 2 to 10 cards at 4:5 for image-only carousels, at least 1080×1080. Feed video ads are 1080×1920 (9:16), MP4, MOV or GIF, up to 4 GB. Keep roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% of a Story or Reels ad free of text and logos.
These numbers come from Meta's Ads Guide and Business Help Centre, checked in October 2026. Meta publishes them per placement, and the pages don't all agree on the minimums, so below we give the recommended size for each Instagram placement, the hard limits, and how to make one product photo fit all of them without cropping the product.
- Feed image: 1440×1800 (4:5), JPG or PNG, 30 MB max, at least 500 px wide.
- Stories and Reels image: 1440×2560 (9:16), 30 MB max, 1% ratio tolerance.
- Carousel: 2–10 cards; 4:5 for image-only, 1:1 if any card is a video; at least 1080×1080.
- Feed video: 1080×1920 (9:16), 1 second to 60 minutes, 4 GB max.
- Safe zone (Stories, Reels): keep about 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% each side clear.
What are the Instagram ad sizes for each placement?
Design two masters, a 4:5 portrait and a 9:16 vertical, and you cover every Instagram placement. The table gives Meta's recommended size and technical limits for each.
| Placement and format | Recommended size | Ratio | File and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed image | 1440×1800 | 4:5 | JPG or PNG; 30 MB; min width 500 px; ratio 1.91:1 to 4:5 |
| Stories image | 1440×2560 | 9:16 | JPG or PNG; 30 MB; min width 500 px |
| Reels image | 1440×2560 | 9:16 | JPG or PNG; 30 MB; min width 500 px |
| Feed carousel | At least 1080×1080 | 4:5 (images only) or 1:1 (with video) | 2–10 cards; image 30 MB, video 4 GB; video 1 s to 2 min |
| Feed video | 1080×1920 | 9:16 | MP4, MOV or GIF; 4 GB; 1 s to 60 min; min width 250 px |
Meta's Instagram ad specs, from the Meta Ads Guide pages for each placement, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Meta's Business Help Centre also lists a recommended minimum of 1080×1080 pixels for Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels image ads. That's a floor, not a target: upload at the recommended sizes above so the ad stays sharp on large phones.
What size is an Instagram feed ad?
1440×1800 pixels, a 4:5 portrait, JPG or PNG. The Ads Guide sets the technical limits at 30 MB, at least 500 pixels wide, and any ratio from 1.91:1 landscape to 4:5 portrait, with a 1% tolerance. Portrait wins on a phone because it takes the most screen height; a square 1:1 still works and is the easiest shape to reuse elsewhere.
Text recommendations for the feed image ad: primary text of 125 characters and a 40-character headline. Longer text is allowed but gets truncated behind a “more” link, so put the offer in the first line. If you also post organically, the shapes match our Instagram post size guide.
What size are Instagram Story and Reels ads?
1440×2560 pixels (9:16), JPG or PNG up to 30 MB, for image ads in both Stories and Reels. Stories image ads play for 5 to 16 seconds or until the viewer swipes. Meta recommends primary text of 125 characters for Stories and 44 characters for Reels image ads.
The safe zone matters more than the pixel size here. Meta advises leaving roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and key elements, because the profile icon, caption and call-to-action button sit over those areas. On a 1440×2560 canvas that's about 360 px at the top, 900 px at the bottom and 86 px on each side.
| Area on a 1440×2560 ad | Keep clear | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Top | About 360 px (14%) | Profile icon and “Sponsored” label |
| Bottom | About 900 px (35%) | Caption and call-to-action button |
| Each side | About 86 px (6%) | Cropping on narrower screens |

What size are Instagram carousel ads?
At least 1080×1080 pixels per card, 2 to 10 cards. Meta recommends 4:5 for carousels made only of images; if any card is a video, the carousel currently has to be 1:1. Images can be JPG or PNG up to 30 MB; videos MP4, MOV or GIF up to 4 GB and 1 second to 2 minutes long.
Carousels suit product catalogs: one product per card, the same background on every card, and the price or benefit in the first line of text. Meta may show the card a person is most likely to respond to first, but keeps the overall order, so don't build a carousel that only makes sense in sequence.
What size are Instagram video ads?
Meta's Ads Guide recommends 1080×1920 (9:16) for Instagram feed video ads, as MP4, MOV or GIF files up to 4 GB and between 1 second and 60 minutes long, at least 250 pixels wide. Captions and sound are optional but recommended. In practice, product video ads perform best short: hook in the first second, product in hand by the third.
A 9:16 video with the safe zone respected runs in Feed, Stories and Reels. Put captions in the middle third of the frame so the CTA button doesn't cover them.
AiArter's UGC video ads make 9:16 creator-style product videos with a script and captions, sized for exactly these placements.
How do you make one product photo fit every Instagram ad size?
- Shoot or pick a photo with space around the product. Tight crops can't become 9:16 without cutting the product.
- Make the 4:5 master at 1440×1800 for feed and image carousels.
- Make the 9:16 master at 1440×2560 for Stories and Reels, with the product and any text in the middle band.
- Check the safe zones by overlaying Meta's template or simply leaving the top and bottom plain.
- Export JPG at high quality; a 1440 px wide JPG is far under 30 MB.
The free Instagram image resizer makes 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16 versions in your browser, and the aspect ratio calculator works out pixel sizes for any ratio. When cropping to 9:16 would cut the product, AiArter's AI image extender adds matching background instead, for 8 credits per size.

Mostly. Both feed image ads use 1440×1800 (4:5) and both Stories and Reels use 9:16, so one set of files covers both when you run Advantage+ placements. The differences are in the details: the Facebook feed image ad lists a 600 px minimum width and a 3% ratio tolerance, and Facebook feed carousels are recommended at 1:1. Frequently asked questions

1440×1800 (4:5) for feed image ads and 1440×2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels image ads, according to Meta's Ads Guide.
Can Instagram ads be square?
Yes. Feed image ads accept ratios from 1.91:1 to 4:5, so a 1:1 square works. It takes less screen height than 4:5, so most advertisers use portrait.
What is the maximum file size for Instagram ads?
30 MB for images and 4 GB for videos, per Meta's Ads Guide.
How many cards can an Instagram carousel ad have?
From 2 to 10 cards. Use 4:5 when all cards are images and 1:1 when the carousel includes a video.
How much text can an Instagram ad have?
Meta recommends primary text of 125 characters and a 40-character headline for feed image ads, and 44 characters of primary text for Reels image ads. Text on the image itself should stay out of the Stories and Reels safe-zone margins.
