How to Use Etsy Tags (2026): 13 Tags, Rules, Examples and Mistakes

How to use Etsy tags: add all 13 tags to every listing, each up to 20 characters, and make most of them 2–3 word phrases a buyer would actually type, like “linen table napkins”. Don't repeat your category or attributes, skip plurals and misspellings (Etsy matches root words), and use letters, numbers and spaces only.

Tags are the 13 slots where you tell Etsy search what else your item is: who it's for, what occasion it suits, what style it matches, what else people call it. Your title says what the item is in plain words; tags catch all the other ways buyers search for it. This guide covers Etsy's tag rules, how tags work with titles and attributes, a method for writing 13 good tags, full examples, and the mistakes that waste slots.

The short version
  • Rules: up to 13 tags per listing, up to 20 characters each including spaces.
  • Use phrases: “custom bracelet” is one tag and matches better than “custom” and “bracelet” in two slots.
  • Attributes and categories act like tags, so don't spend tags repeating them.
  • No need for plurals or typos. Etsy matches root words and corrects common misspellings.
  • Allowed characters: letters, numbers and spaces, with a hyphen or apostrophe only inside a word.

How many tags can you use on Etsy?

Up to 13 tags per listing, and Etsy recommends using all 13. Each tag can be up to 20 characters, and spaces count. That gives you roughly 260 characters of extra search terms per listing on top of your title.

RuleEtsy's limit
Tags per listingUp to 13
Characters per tagUp to 20, spaces included
Allowed charactersLetters, numbers, spaces; hyphens and apostrophes inside words; ™ © ®
Can a tag start with a hyphen or apostrophe? No
Plurals needed? No, Etsy matches root words (“diary” matches “diaries”)
Misspellings needed? No, Etsy redirects common mistakes

Etsy's tag limits and character rules were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Before you save, paste your tags into our free listing character counter with the Etsy preset. It shows each tag's length, the tag count out of 13, tags you've used twice and characters Etsy doesn't allow, and checks your title against the 140-character limit. It runs in your browser.

How do Etsy tags, titles and attributes work together?

Etsy search reads your title, tags, categories and attributes together, so each should add something the others don't. Etsy's current title guidance moved away from long keyword-stuffed titles: name the item clearly and let tags and attributes carry the rest.

FieldJobExample for a linen napkin set
TitleWhat it is, plus top 2–3 detailsLinen Napkins Set of 4, Sage Green, Stonewashed
CategoryWhere it sits in Etsy's catalogHome & Living > Kitchen & Dining > Linens > Napkins
AttributesFixed facts from Etsy's listsColor: green; Material: linen; Occasion
TagsOther phrases buyers searchdinner party decor, wedding table linen, hostess gift
Attributes are free tags

Etsy says categories and attributes act like tags, so if an exact phrase is already your category or attribute, you don't need it as a tag. If “green” is set as the color attribute, skip it as a tag, but a more specific phrase like “sage green napkins” can still earn a slot.

Older Etsy advice told sellers to repeat title phrases in tags. The newer guidance focuses on variety: make all 13 tags as different from each other as possible. A sensible middle ground is to tag your single most important phrase, and use the rest for terms the title doesn't cover.

How do you write good Etsy tags?

Think like a buyer, not a maker. If you can't imagine someone typing a phrase into Google, Etsy's own advice is that it shouldn't be in your tags. Work through these angles until you have 13.

AngleAsk yourselfExample tags
What it isWhat else is it called?cloth napkins, dinner napkins
Material and makeWhat's it made of, how?stonewashed linen, natural linen
StyleWhat look does it fit?farmhouse table, boho table decor
OccasionWhen would someone buy it?wedding table linen, thanksgiving table
RecipientWho is it for?hostess gift, housewarming gift
Use or roomWhere does it go?dining table decor, picnic napkins
Specific detailWhat's distinctive?sage green napkins, reusable napkins
  1. Fill in attributes first, so you know which facts are already covered.
  2. Brainstorm 25–30 phrases from the angles above.
  3. Check them in Etsy's search bar. The autocomplete suggestions show phrases real buyers type.
  4. Cut anything over 20 characters by dropping filler words, or split it into two phrases a buyer might search separately.
  5. Remove duplicates and attribute repeats, then keep the 13 most specific and relevant.
  6. Review after a few weeks in Shop Stats, which shows the search terms that brought visits, and swap out tags that bring nothing.

What do long-tail Etsy tags look like?

Long-tail tags are specific 2–3 word phrases with less competition and clearer buying intent. “necklace” competes with millions of listings; “birth flower necklace” reaches people who already know what they want.

Too broadBetter long-tail tagCharacters
necklacebirth flower necklace21 (too long: try “birthflower necklace” or “birth month necklace”)
candlesoy candle gift15
printbotanical wall art18
mugfunny coffee mug16
giftgift for gardener17
earringsgold hoop earrings18

The first row is a common trap: a great phrase that's one character too long. Shorten words, drop a space-heavy word, or pick a close variant. “birth month necklace” is exactly 20 characters and fits.

Notice what's missing: no single-word tags like “candle”, no plurals of the same phrase, and no repeat of the category. Every tag adds a different search angle.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags should I use on Etsy?

Use all 13 tags Etsy allows on every listing. Each tag can be up to 20 characters including spaces, and multi-word phrases count as a single tag.

What is the character limit for Etsy tags?

Each Etsy tag can be up to 20 characters, and spaces count toward the limit. If a phrase is too long, shorten a word or choose a close variant a buyer would also search.

Should Etsy tags match my title?

Not word for word. Etsy reads your title, tags, attributes and categories together, so tags work best for phrases the title doesn't cover. Repeating your single most important phrase is fine.

Do I need plural tags on Etsy?

No. Etsy matches the root words of a search, so a tag like “diary” also matches searches for “diaries”. Use the slot for a different phrase.

Do attributes count as tags on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy says categories and attributes act like tags, so if a phrase is already your category or an attribute, you don't need to add it as a tag.

Can I use symbols in Etsy tags?

Only a few. Tags can contain letters, numbers and spaces, plus a hyphen or apostrophe inside a word, and the ™ © ® marks. Tags can't start with a hyphen or apostrophe.
