remove.bg vs Canva Background Remover (2026): What Changes When remove.bg Moves to Canva

For most people the answer is now Canva. remove.bg says its standalone website will close on 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET, with background removal moving into Canva (paid plans) and its self-service API moving to Leonardo.ai. Until then, remove.bg still wins on resolution (up to 50 MP), but don't buy credits you can't use before December.

A note on sources: remove.bg's shutdown details, prices and limits come from its own pricing page and FAQ, and Canva's from its Help Centre and pricing page, all checked in October 2026. AiArter, our product, is mentioned once as a third option for marketplace white backgrounds. Prices change, and Canva's vary by region, so check current pricing before you buy.

The short version
  • remove.bg is closing as a standalone product on 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET. Its FAQ names Canva's Background Remover as the replacement and says it uses the same technology.
  • Existing subscribers: plans keep working until 1 December, then end automatically. Annual plans get a pro-rata refund; monthly renewals on or after 1 November are free.
  • Pay-as-you-go credits expire on 1 December 2026, so use them before then.
  • Developers: the self-service API stops accepting requests on 1 December; remove.bg points to Leonardo.ai's API. Enterprise API contracts continue as normal.
  • Canva's remover today: paid plans only, up to 50 images per folder, photos under 9 MB, and results from photos over 10 MP downscaled to 10 MP.

What is happening to remove.bg?

remove.bg, part of Canva since 2021, is folding its background removal into the Canva platform. From 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET the standalone website and accounts won't be accessible. Background removal moves to Canva, and API access moves to Leonardo.ai, which Canva also owns. remove.bg's FAQ says Canva will add more functionality before 1 December, so some of Canva's current limits below may change.

What remove.bg's FAQ says existing users should expect:

  • Annual subscriptions work normally until 1 December, then end. Unused time after that date is refunded pro rata to the original payment method, with no action needed.
  • Monthly subscriptions work until 1 December and end automatically. Any final renewal on or after 1 November is free. You can cancel earlier from your remove.bg dashboard.
  • Pay-as-you-go credits expire on 1 December 2026.
  • Account data stays accessible until the shutdown. Export your credit usage report and invoices before then; they can't be downloaded afterwards.
  • Desktop app users are pointed to Canva's bulk background removal, on the web or in Canva's desktop app.
  • API users: the self-service API stops on 1 December; the same background removal is offered through Leonardo.ai's API, which also adds upscaling and scene generation. Check Leonardo's pricing and migration guide for details.

remove.bg's and Canva's prices, limits and shutdown terms, taken from their own pages, were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Should you still buy remove.bg credits?

Only for work you'll finish before 1 December 2026. Subscriptions end on that date and pay-as-you-go credits expire then, so a large credit pack bought now is likely to be partly wasted. If you need 50 MP cutouts for a print job this month, remove.bg is still the higher-resolution option.

remove.bg optionPriceCreditsCost per image
Personal subscription$9/mo ($8.10/mo yearly)40/mo22.5 cents
Professional subscription$39/mo ($35.10/mo yearly)200/mo19.5 cents

Pay-as-you-go$33$1.00
Pay-as-you-go$91090 cents

Subscription credits are valid only within their month and can't be carried over, per remove.bg's pricing page. On Canva's paid plans there's no per-image charge, subject to fair-use limits, so if you already pay for Canva the remover adds nothing.

Is Canva's background remover free?

No. Canva's Help Centre says Background Remover is included with paid plans, and removing a background through Canva AI is paid-only too. Free users can tidy an image by hand with the Pixel Eraser brushes, but not use the one-click remover. Canva offers a free trial of Pro and Business, and prices vary by country, so check Canva's pricing page for your region.

Is Canva's cutout quality the same as remove.bg's?

remove.bg's FAQ says Canva's Background Remover uses the same background-removal technology. The measurable difference today is resolution. remove.bg outputs up to 50 MP, while Canva downscales results from photos over 10 MP to 10 MP and won't take photos of 9 MB or more. For marketplace images that rarely matters (a 2000×2000 image is 4 MP), but it can for print or heavy cropping.

Canva has erase and restore brushes for fixing edges after removal. Hair, fur, lace and glass are the usual trouble spots; see how to make a product image transparent for tips, and how to remove a background in Canva for the steps.

How do you remove backgrounds in bulk after remove.bg closes?

In Canva, open Projects, then either run Remove background on a whole folder of 50 images or fewer, or tick images inside a folder and choose BG Remover. Canva saves the results to a new “Edited” folder (or the same folder for a selection) and leaves your originals unchanged. It processes only uploaded images and skips Canva library photos and designs. For larger or automated volumes, remove.bg points to Leonardo.ai's API. Our guide to removing backgrounds from multiple images covers other bulk workflows.

Is there a third option for marketplace white backgrounds?

Both tools give you a cutout; a marketplace main image still has to be placed on pure white, centered and padded. If that's your goal, AiArter's bulk background remover does all three in one step (4 credits per photo, about 4.8 cents on the $12 plan): pure white, product at about 85% of a 2000×2000 frame, batches of 50, failed photos not charged. It's web-only and has no API, so developers should look at Leonardo.ai or another API. For products already shot on white, our free remove-white-background tool runs in the browser without an account.

Upload a batch of product photos and download pure white, Amazon-sized main images as one ZIP.

Before 1 December: export and use up

If you have a remove.bg account, download your invoices and credit usage report, spend any pay-as-you-go credits, and re-run any high-resolution cutouts you'll need later. After the shutdown the account can't be opened.

How to choose a replacement for remove.bg

  1. Already on Canva Pro or Business? Switch to Canva's remover; it's the official replacement and costs nothing extra per image.
  2. Check your file sizes. If you rely on photos over 9 MB or output above 10 MP, test Canva now and watch for the changes it says are coming before December.
  3. Using the API? Read Leonardo.ai's migration guide and pricing, or contact remove.bg if you have an Enterprise contract.
  4. Need marketplace-ready white images rather than cutouts? Consider a tool that outputs the finished white main image directly.
  5. Test your hardest images (glass, hair, white on white) in your chosen replacement before your remove.bg access ends.
