Pixlr Alternatives (2026): 6 Photo Editors Compared

The best Pixlr alternatives in 2026 are Photopea (free browser editor that opens PSD files), GIMP (free, open-source desktop editor), Fotor (free Basic plan plus AI tools), Canva and Adobe Express (design suites with free plans) and AiArter (marketplace product photos from $12/month). Pixlr itself has a free version, with Plus from $1.99/month billed yearly.

Full disclosure: AiArter is our product, so read our entry with that in mind. It isn't a general photo editor like Pixlr, and we say where the others are the better fit. Competitor prices and features come from each vendor's own pricing, help or product pages, checked in October 2026. Prices change, so check current pricing before you pay.

The short version
  • Pixlr is already cheap. It has a free version with no account needed, Plus at $2.49/month ($1.99 billed yearly) and Premium at $9.99/month ($7.99 billed yearly). Switch for features, not price.
  • Closest like-for-like: Photopea for a free browser editor with PSD support, GIMP for a free desktop editor.
  • For design work: Canva and Adobe Express are better for templates, social posts and ads; Fotor sits between an editor and a design tool.
  • For product listings: AiArter makes white, scene and channel-sized product images from your own photo, and has free no-sign-up browser tools for basic edits.

What does Pixlr offer, and what does it cost?

Pixlr is a browser-based photo editor with two main apps, Pixlr Editor and Pixlr Express, plus mobile and desktop apps. Its free version needs no account, and it's free for education. Paid plans:

  • Plus: $2.49/month or $1.99/month billed yearly, with 80 AI credits a month, ad-free editing and unlimited saves.
  • Premium: $9.99/month or $7.99/month billed yearly, with 1,000 AI credits a month, access to all image, video and audio models, and Pixlr's fonts and templates.
  • Ultra: $24.99/month or $19.99/month billed yearly, with more credits, unlimited “fast” image generations under fair use and a priority queue.

Pixlr's background remover is listed as a free online tool with batch processing, and its batch editor takes up to 100 photos (a trial account is needed). People look for an alternative when they want PSD support, an offline desktop editor, stronger design templates, or images made specifically for marketplace listings.

Which Pixlr alternative is best for each job?

1. Photopea: free Photoshop-style editing in a browser

Photopea runs in the browser, fully supports opening and saving PSD files and has one-click background removal. A Premium account removes ads; the price is shown in its account window, so check current pricing there.

Suits: anyone who knows Photoshop or receives PSD files from designers. Also see Photoshop alternatives for product photos.

2. GIMP: free desktop editing

GIMP is free, open-source software for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows; version 3.2.6 was current when we checked. It's a full desktop editor, so it works offline and handles large files without a browser.

Suits: people who want a powerful editor at no cost and don't mind a learning curve.

3. Fotor: editor plus design templates

Fotor combines a photo editor, design templates, a background remover, an AI image generator, AI video tools and a batch editor, with apps for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac. Its Basic plan is free forever with limited credits; Pro, Pro+ and Max add HD export, transparent PNG and AI batch background removal. Prices didn't display on its pricing page when we checked.

Suits: people who want one app for edits and simple designs. See Fotor alternatives for a closer look.

4. Canva: templates and marketing graphics

Canva has a free plan for basic design and a Pro plan that includes its background remover. Canva's pricing page blocked our check, so confirm current pricing on its site.

Suits: sellers who mainly make social posts, banners and ads. Compare in Canva alternatives for product photos.

5. Adobe Express: quick graphics in the Adobe world

Adobe Express has a free plan, and Premium includes 250 generative credits per month. Its pricing page showed regional prices when we checked, so confirm the US price on Adobe's site.

Suits: teams already using Adobe fonts or apps. See Adobe Express alternatives.

6. AiArter: product photos for listings (our product)

AiArter isn't a general photo editor. It makes the images a listing needs from your own photo, with the product cut out and kept as shot while only the background changes.

Where Pixlr beats it: Pixlr is a full photo editor with mobile and desktop apps and a free version. AiArter is web only, has no public API, and its AI tools need the 14-day trial or a paid plan.

How do Pixlr alternatives compare on price?

Most of these tools have a free tier, so the real question is what the paid plan adds.

Tool and planPriceWhat you get
Pixlr Plus$2.49/mo or $1.99/mo billed yearly80 AI credits a month, ad-free
Pixlr Premium$9.99/mo or $7.99/mo billed yearly1,000 AI credits a month, all models
PhotopeaFree; Premium check current pricingFull editor free; Premium removes ads
GIMPFreeFull desktop editor
Adobe Express PremiumCheck current pricing250 generative credits a month
AiArter Starter$12/mo1,000 credits = 250 white backgrounds or 125 AI scenes

For general editing, Photopea and GIMP cost nothing. AiArter's credits are for product outputs: a white background is 4.8 cents and an AI scene 9.6 cents on Starter. Pixlr and AiArter credits measure different things, so don't compare them one for one.

Fix light and color before any AI edit

Background removal and AI scenes look better when the source photo is bright, sharp and neutral. Correct exposure and white balance first in whichever editor you choose. Our guide to fixing white balance shows how.

How to choose a Pixlr alternative

  1. Name what Pixlr lacks for you: PSD files, offline use, templates or listing images.
  2. Check where you work: browser, desktop or phone.
  3. Check the free tier: ads, watermarks and export quality.
  4. Check file support if you trade PSD or layered files with a designer.
  5. Edit the same three photos in two or three tools and compare the time and result.
