Photoshop Alternatives for Product Photos (2026): Free and Paid Editors Compared

The best Photoshop alternatives for product photos in 2026 are GIMP (free desktop editor), Photopea (free in a browser, opens PSD files), Affinity by Canva (free for individuals since late 2025), Canva (listing graphics), Pixelmator Pro (Mac, one-time purchase or Apple's $12.99/month Creator Studio) and AiArter (ours: white backgrounds and scenes in bulk). Pick by job, not by feature count.

Disclosure: AiArter is our product, so weigh our entry with that in mind. We say where the other tools are better, and every third-party price and feature below comes from the vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026. Prices and plans change often, so check current pricing before you buy. Most product photo work is light, color and background, which our free product photo editor handles in a browser; this guide covers the wider choice when you need more.

The short version
  • Free and full-featured: GIMP (desktop) and Photopea (browser) cover layers, masks, healing and color. Both take some learning.
  • Biggest change in 2025: Affinity became one free app for individuals; its AI tools need a paid Canva plan.
  • Mac users: Pixelmator Pro is the closest Photoshop feel, now owned by Apple.
  • Listing graphics, not retouching: Canva is faster for infographics and sale banners.
  • Repetitive product edits: a product-photo tool beats any general editor when you need 50 white-background images, not one perfect composite.

Do you actually need Photoshop for product photos?

Usually not. Photoshop is the most capable editor, but a typical online seller needs five things: brighten and color-correct, crop to a size, remove or replace the background, clean up dust or a small mark, and export a sharp JPG. Every tool in this guide does at least three of those.

Photoshop is still the right choice if you do advanced compositing, retouch jewelry or cosmetics at the pixel level, work with print files for packaging, or share layered PSDs with a designer who uses it. Adobe sells it only by subscription, either alone or in the Photography plan with Lightroom, with a 7-day trial. Its generative features such as Generative Fill draw on Adobe's generative credits.

Third-party prices, platforms and plan details were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Is GIMP a good free Photoshop alternative?

Yes, if you are willing to learn it. GIMP is free, open source and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. The 3.2 series arrived in March 2026, with point releases since (3.2.6 in September 2026), and it supports layers, masks, paths, the Heal and Clone tools, curves and levels.

  • Good for product photos: careful cutouts with the Paths tool, removing dust with Heal, fixing color with Curves, batch-free precision work.
  • Less good: no one-click AI background removal or generative fill built in, and menus differ from Photoshop, so tutorials don't transfer directly.

Is Photopea really free?

Yes. Photopea runs in a browser, looks and works much like Photoshop, and opens PSD, XCF, Sketch and common image files. The free version shows ads; a Premium plan removes them. Its site lists one-click background removal and an AI tool that replaces part of an image from a text description.

Photopea is the easiest switch for anyone who already knows Photoshop shortcuts, and the best way to open a PSD a designer sent you without paying for Adobe. Very large, many-layer files can feel slow in a browser.

Is Affinity free now?

Yes, for individuals. In late 2025 Canva merged Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher into one app called Affinity and made it free, replacing the old one-time licences. You need a free Canva account to download it. It runs on Mac and Windows, with an iPad version announced. AI tools inside Affinity, such as generative fill and background removal, need a Canva premium plan.

For product sellers, Affinity is the strongest free option if you want professional retouching and also lay out catalogs, labels or line sheets, since the photo and layout tools now live in one app.

What about Pixelmator Pro and Photomator?

Pixelmator Pro is the closest thing to Photoshop on a Mac, and it is now Apple's. Apple's Creator Studio subscription ($12.99/month or $129/year, per Apple's page) includes Pixelmator Pro on Mac and iPad, and Apple says the standalone Mac apps are still available as a one-time App Store purchase. It has machine-learning tools for background removal and upscaling.

Photomator, from the same team, is a Lightroom-style editor for color, light and batch adjustments. It remains a separate App Store purchase and is not part of Creator Studio. Apple has said little about its plans for it, so check the App Store listing before committing.

When is Canva better than Photoshop?

When the job is a graphic, not a photo. Canva is the faster tool for Amazon infographics, Etsy shop banners, sale graphics and social posts, with templates, fonts and brand colors in one place. Its free plan covers most of that. The background remover is on paid plans only, and Canva's Pro price has changed more than once in 2026, so check Canva's pricing page. For retouching the product itself, use one of the editors above.

Our guide to removing a background in Canva covers the paid tool and the free workarounds.

Where does AiArter fit?

AiArter is not a Photoshop replacement. It has no layers, brushes or manual retouching. It does a narrow set of product photo jobs that take the longest by hand:

  • White main images (4 credits): pure white RGB 255,255,255, product centered at about 85% of a 2000×2000 frame, optional soft shadow.
  • Transparent PNG cutouts and brand-color backgrounds (4 credits each).
  • Lifestyle scenes (8 credits): your product is cut out of your photo and kept as-is; only the background is generated.
  • Bulk: the bulk background remover handles up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download, and failed photos aren't charged.
  • Free browser tools (no sign-up): the photo editor for brightness, contrast, warmth and sharpening, the image cropper and the marketplace image resizer.

The trial includes 50 credits, but trial images carry a small mark, so they aren't ready for marketplaces that ban watermarks. GIMP, Photopea or Affinity is the better choice for one-off creative edits; AiArter is faster when the same edit repeats across a catalog.

How do I pick the right Photoshop alternative?

  1. List your weekly edits. If it's mostly light, color and crop, a free phone app or browser editor is enough.
  2. Check your files. Receiving PSDs from a designer points to Photopea or Affinity.
  3. Check your computer. Mac only: Pixelmator Pro. Linux: GIMP. Chromebook: Photopea.
  4. Count the repeats. Fifty identical background swaps a week is a product-photo tool job, not an editor job.
  5. Try before paying. Every tool here has a free version or trial.
Keep the product honest

Whatever you edit in, marketplaces expect the photo to match the item. Clean the background, fix the light and remove dust, but don't change the product's color, shape or label. Our guide to product photo color accuracy explains how to check.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to Photoshop for product photos?

GIMP and Photopea are the best fully free options; Affinity by Canva is free for individuals and closer to professional software. Photopea is easiest if you know Photoshop, since it runs in a browser and opens PSD files.

Is Affinity Photo still available?

Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher were merged into one free app called Affinity in late 2025. You need a free Canva account to download it, and its AI tools require a Canva premium plan.

Can GIMP remove backgrounds from product photos?

Yes, with manual tools such as Paths, Fuzzy Select and layer masks. It takes longer than a one-click AI remover, but it gives precise edges on simple products.

Is Photopea safe and legal to use?

Yes. Photopea is a legitimate browser-based editor that is free with ads, with an optional Premium plan. It's a good way to edit PSD files without an Adobe subscription.

Is Pixelmator Pro better than Photoshop?

Not more capable overall, but it covers most product photo edits on a Mac with a simpler interface. It's available as a one-time Mac App Store purchase or through Apple's Creator Studio subscription.

Do I need Photoshop to sell on Amazon or Etsy?

No. Marketplaces care about the result: size, background and accuracy. A free editor plus a white background tool meets Amazon and Etsy photo rules for most products.
