For most sellers in 2026, Photoroom is the better choice: Pro costs $7.50/month billed yearly for 1,000 exports, with AI backgrounds and mobile apps. remove.bg is a cutout-only tool at 1 credit per image ($9/month for 40), and its standalone website closes on 1 December 2026 as background removal moves into Canva. Use remove.bg now only for short-term, high-resolution cutouts.
Disclosure: neither tool is ours. AiArter, our product, is mentioned once below as a third option. Every price, limit and date here comes from Photoroom's and remove.bg's own pricing pages, checked in October 2026. Both change, so check current pricing before you buy.
- remove.bg is closing as a standalone site. Its own banner says the website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET, and its background removal is moving to Canva. Check remove.bg's FAQ for what happens to the API, apps and credits.
- Price per cutout: Photoroom Pro is about 0.75 cents per export at full use; remove.bg subscriptions run 17.8–22.5 cents per image and pay-as-you-go up to $1.
- Resolution: remove.bg outputs up to 50 megapixels; Photoroom's export limits apply up to 2K, with 4K on its Ultra plan.
- Beyond cutouts: Photoroom adds AI backgrounds, shadows, retouching, resizing, batch editing and AI fashion models. remove.bg does one thing: remove the background.
- Verdict: Photoroom for sellers and anyone starting fresh; remove.bg only to finish existing work before the cutoff.

What's happening to remove.bg?
remove.bg became part of Canva in 2021. Its pricing page now carries a banner saying its background removal is moving to Canva and that the standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET. Its FAQ page says Canva is migrating remove.bg's background removal into the Canva platform.
What that means for you depends on how you use it. If you use the website, plan to move before December. If you call the API, use the desktop app or hold unused credits, read remove.bg's FAQ and updated terms now, because those details decide how much time you have. We compare the two Canva-era options in remove.bg vs Canva's background remover.
Which is cheaper, Photoroom or remove.bg?
Photoroom, by a wide margin, if you use a meaningful share of its exports. remove.bg charges per image; Photoroom charges a flat monthly price for an export allowance.
| Plan | Price | Images included | Cost per image at full use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photoroom Pro | $7.50/mo billed yearly | 1,000 exports | 0.75 cents |
| Photoroom Max | $20.99/mo billed yearly | 3,000 exports | 0.70 cents |
| remove.bg Personal | $9/mo | 40 | 22.5 cents |
| remove.bg Professional | $39/mo | 200 | 19.5 cents |
| remove.bg Professional | $89/mo | 500 | 17.8 cents |
| remove.bg pay as you go | $3 | 3 | $1.00 |
| remove.bg pay as you go | $49 | 75 | 65 cents |
| remove.bg pay as you go | $199 | 500 | 39.8 cents |
remove.bg's subscription credits don't roll over, and its pay-as-you-go credits suit one-off jobs. Photoroom's monthly-billed price is higher than its yearly rate; check its pricing page for the monthly figure. With remove.bg's standalone site closing, a yearly remove.bg plan bought today makes little sense.
Which gives better cutouts?
Both are mature background removers, and we haven't run our own benchmark, so we won't claim one cuts out hair or glass better. The practical differences are elsewhere:
- Resolution: remove.bg returns full-resolution cutouts up to 50 megapixels from uploads up to 22 MB. Photoroom's export allowances apply to images up to 2K; 4K output is on Ultra ($82.50/month billed yearly).
- Refining: remove.bg's Photoshop plugin returns a layer mask you can refine. Photoroom has its own editor with retouch, AI fill and shadow tools.
- What comes next: a remove.bg cutout is a transparent image; in Photoroom you can add a background, a shadow and resize in the same place.
For print or very large images, remove.bg's resolution ceiling was a real advantage. For marketplace listings, which usually need around 2,000 px, Photoroom's 2K limit is enough.
Which is better for e-commerce product photos?
Photoroom. A listing needs more than a cutout: a white or styled background, consistent framing, often a shadow and several sizes. Photoroom includes background removal, shadow presets, AI expand/resize, retouch and an image enhancer as core tools on every paid plan, within fair use. AI backgrounds and AI fashion models draw on AI credits. Max adds a Shopify integration and a video generator. It also has native iPhone, iPad and Android apps, so you can shoot and edit on one device.
remove.bg fits a different workflow: designers and developers who wanted a clean transparent PNG and did everything else in Photoshop, Figma or their own code.
Is there a third option?
If you work in a browser and mostly need marketplace images, AiArter (our product) is one more option. It makes a transparent PNG, a pure white 2000×2000 main image or a brand-color background for 4 credits, about 4.8 cents each on its $12 plan, with batches of up to 50 photos. It has no mobile app, no public API and no permanent free plan, so it isn't a fit for phone-first sellers or developers.
Upload a product photo and get a transparent PNG or a pure white main image, with the product kept exactly as shot.

- Need very large cutouts? Check the replacement's maximum output; Photoroom's export limits cover 2K, with 4K on Ultra.
- Need an API? Photoroom has one with a separate allowance; compare its rates with other API providers.
