Gigapixel Personal is $149 a year.

Disclosure: AiArter is our product, so read our entry with that in mind. We've tried to show where Gigapixel and others are the better pick. Every competitor price below comes from the vendor's own pricing or product page, checked in October 2026. Check current pricing before you buy.

The short version
  • Gigapixel is subscription only now: Personal is $12/month with $149 billed yearly, $19/month on a 12-month plan billed monthly, or $29 month to month. Pro is $42/month with $499 billed yearly.
  • Free alternative: Upscayl runs on Windows, macOS and Linux at no cost.

  • For listing photos, AiArter pairs a 4× upscale with white backgrounds, scenes and channel sizes; it doesn't match Gigapixel's model choice or output control.

What does Topaz Gigapixel do well?

Gigapixel is a desktop upscaler with a wide set of models. Its product page lists Standard, High Fidelity, Low Res, Text & Shapes, Art & CG and Recover models, a Face Recovery model, and generative models including Redefine and Wonder. Topaz says it can upscale images up to 16× in pixels. All plans include unlimited cloud image rendering, with two image jobs at a time on Personal and four on Pro. There's also a Topaz Studio bundle at $33/month with $399 billed yearly.

So why look elsewhere? The common reasons: the yearly price is high for occasional use, you'd rather not install software, you need an API, or the upscale is one step in a product photo workflow that happens elsewhere.

Which Gigapixel alternative is best for each need?

1. Upscayl: the free desktop alternative

Upscayl is free, open-source software for Linux, macOS and Windows. Its site says it enhances images up to 16× and handles several images in one go. Because it runs locally, speed depends on your computer. It has fewer specialized models than Gigapixel, but for many sharp, small photos the result is good enough. A paid Upscayl Cloud version also exists; check its site for pricing.

Suits: people who want Gigapixel-style offline upscaling without a subscription.

2. Let's Enhance: the web alternative with big outputs

Let's Enhance runs in the browser and charges 1 credit per image. Starter is $9/month billed yearly ($12 monthly) for 100 credits, Pro $24 ($32) for 300 and Max $34 ($45) for 500. Maximum output is 256 megapixels on Starter, 350 on Pro and 512 on Max. Paid plans include background removal and roll unused credits over, and there's a business API.

Suits: print and large-format work where you don't want to install software. More options in our Let's Enhance alternatives guide.

3. Pixelcut: unlimited upscales on a phone or browser

Pixelcut Pro is listed at $10/month, or $8/month billed yearly, with unlimited upscales and unlimited background removal, 1,000 batch exports a month, 3 team seats and a commercial license. The free plan has limited upscales. It runs on iOS, Android and the web.

Suits: sellers who want a cheap flat plan and edit on a phone.

4. Claid.ai: upscaling at scale through an API

Claid.ai lists upscaling at 2–8 credits per operation and a free trial with 50 credits. Its Essentials plan allows up to 250 upscales a month and Pro up to 1,000 at the lowest credit cost; check Claid's pricing page for current dollar prices. It also offers background removal, AI backgrounds and other catalog tools through the same API.

Suits: stores or agencies that want images processed automatically on upload.

5. AiArter: upscale as part of a listing workflow (our product)

AiArter's AI upscaler increases resolution four times and sharpens details for 3 credits. It's built for sellers: after the upscale you can make a pure white main image (4 credits), a lifestyle scene or channel-sized versions, with the product cut out and kept as shot.

  • Upscale 4×: 3 credits, about 333 upscales on the $12 Starter plan.
  • AI sharpener for soft images and photo restore for old, scratched or faded prints.
  • Runs in the browser; nothing to install.

Where Gigapixel beats it: Gigapixel has many models, face recovery, scale choices and local processing. AiArter has one 4× setting, no desktop app, no public API and no permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial whose output carries a small “Made with aiarter” mark.

Is Gigapixel cheaper than per-image upscalers?

It depends on volume. Gigapixel and Pixelcut charge a flat price; Let's Enhance and AiArter charge per image. Here's what a year of upscaling costs.

OptionYearly costUpscales a year at full useCost per upscale
Topaz Gigapixel Personal$149UnlimitedFalls with volume (1,000 images = 15 cents)
Pixelcut Pro (yearly)$96UnlimitedFalls with volume (1,000 images = 9.6 cents)
Let's Enhance Starter (yearly)$1081,2009 cents
AiArter Starter (monthly)$144about 4,000 (3 credits each)3.6 cents
Upscayl$0Unlimited (your hardware)Free

If you upscale thousands of images a year, Gigapixel's flat price is reasonable, especially with its model choice. AiArter's figure assumes you spend every credit on upscales; most sellers split credits across white backgrounds and scenes too.

Upscale once, from the best original

Always upscale the original file, not a compressed download or an image that was already upscaled. Errors compound, and a second pass often invents texture your product doesn't have.

How to choose a Topaz Gigapixel alternative

  1. Decide if you need a desktop app. Offline and private: Upscayl. Browser: Let's Enhance, Pixelcut, Claid.ai or AiArter.
  2. Estimate a year of volume. Under a few hundred images, per-image plans cost less than $149; above a few thousand, flat plans win.
  3. Check output size. Large prints need big outputs (Let's Enhance, Gigapixel); marketplace listings usually need around 2,000 px.
  4. Check commercial terms, including revenue caps and trial-use limits.
  5. Test your hardest image in two or three tools and compare text, textures and edges at 100% zoom.
  6. Check marketplace fit with our free Amazon image checker, and read how to make a picture higher resolution for when to reshoot instead.
