    Questions about sku generator

    Is the SKU generator free?
    Yes. It's free with no sign-up and no limit on use.
    Is my product list uploaded?
    No. SKUs are built in your browser and the CSV is made on your device. Your product data never leaves your device.
    What's the difference between a SKU and a UPC or GTIN?
    A SKU is your own internal code for tracking stock, and you can make it up however you like. A UPC, EAN or other GTIN is a global product number licensed through GS1, and marketplaces check it to identify the product. You usually need both: a SKU for your inventory and a GTIN for retail listings.
    What makes a good SKU?
    Keep it short and readable, use the same order of parts for every product, avoid spaces and symbols, and don't start with zeros that a spreadsheet might drop. Put the most general part, such as the brand or category, first so related products sort together.
    How long can a SKU be?
    It depends on the platform. Amazon sellers commonly cite 40 characters, and eBay's API documentation lists 50 for Item.SKU. The tool defaults to 40 and flags anything longer. Change the limit to match your platform.
    How are words abbreviated?
    The product name uses the first letters of its first words, skipping words like “the” and “with”. Common size words become S, M, L, XL. Short values such as XL or 10 stay as typed. Two-word values like Navy Blue use initials, so Navy Blue becomes NBL.
    What if two SKUs come out the same?
    The tool marks them in red. Turn on the running number, use more letters per word, or change one of the values. Blue and Blush both shorten to BLU at 3 letters, for example.
