AI Tools for Shopify Stores (2026): Sidekick, Product Photos, Descriptions, Email and Chat

The best AI tools for Shopify stores in 2026 start with Shopify's own: Sidekick, the AI assistant in your admin, plus built-in AI for product descriptions, image backgrounds and chat replies, included with plans. Add apps only for gaps such as batch product photos or video ads, and install few: each can slow your store.

Shopify has folded most of its AI features, which it used to market as Shopify Magic, into Sidekick and the “AI-powered tools” section of its Help Center. That means a lot of what used to need an app is now a button in the admin. This guide goes job by job (product photos, descriptions, email, chat and store tasks) with the built-in option first, then when an app is worth it, and how to vet apps before you install them.

Disclosure: AiArter is our product and appears in the photo section. It isn't a Shopify app; you upload images it makes like any other file. Shopify features were checked in October 2026 and vary by plan and region, so confirm in your admin and check current pricing for any app.

The short version
  • Sidekick answers questions, analyzes store data, edits products and drafts content inside your admin, and shows changes for your review before applying them.
  • Product descriptions: Shopify's built-in generator drafts copy from a title and keywords in eight languages. Edit for accuracy.
  • Product photos: Shopify's media editor can remove or replace backgrounds; dedicated tools help with batches, consistent scenes and channel sizes.
  • Email and chat: Sidekick can draft email copy, and Shopify Inbox suggests AI replies (English only) for customer chats.
  • Apps: check permissions, reviews, pricing model and speed impact before installing; remove apps you stop using.

What AI tools are built into Shopify?

Shopify includes several AI features in the admin at no extra charge on its plans, centered on Sidekick. The table shows what each does; some features roll out gradually or are in early access.

Shopify featureWhat it doesGood for
SidekickAI assistant in the admin: questions, reports, product edits, content, tasks; you approve changesStore owners without a team
Product description generatorDrafts and rewrites descriptions from a title and keywordsFirst drafts in your store's tone
Media editor background toolsRemove, replace or generate a product image backgroundQuick one-off image fixes
Sidekick content draftsDrafts blog posts, product copy and email text you can paste inCampaigns and newsletters
Shopify Inbox suggested repliesSuggests answers to chat messages from your store information (English)Common pre-sale questions
Sidekick PulseSuggestions on your admin Home pageSpotting tasks and trends

Shopify's AI features, names and availability were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

Shopify's own help pages warn that AI output can contain errors, so review descriptions and answers before publishing.

How do you use Shopify Sidekick?

Open Sidekick from any admin page and ask in plain language. It works with your store's data, so useful requests are specific:

  • “Which products sold most last month, and which had the most returns?”
  • “Write a description for the linen tote using these details: …”
  • “Create a 15% discount code for returning customers that ends Sunday.”
  • “Set up a collection of everything under $30.”
  • “Why did conversion drop this week?”

Sidekick presents changes for review rather than applying them silently, and longer tasks can run in the background. You can also save prompts you repeat as shortcuts. Check what it proposes before approving, especially discounts and bulk product edits.

Which AI tools are best for Shopify product photos?

For a few photos, Shopify's built-in media editor is enough; for a catalog, a dedicated tool saves time. Shopify's editor lets you remove a background, swap in a solid color or generate a new scene from a prompt, one image at a time.

NeedBuilt-in optionWhen to use a dedicated tool
Remove a backgroundMedia editorDozens of photos at once
Lifestyle sceneMedia editor promptMatching scenes across a whole collection
Square, consistent framingManual croppingEvery image centered at the same size
Social and ad sizesNot built inStories, Pins and ads without cropping the product
Video from a product photoNot built inShort clips and UGC-style ads

Shopify recommends square 2048×2048 images for product photos; our Shopify product image size guide covers the details. Whatever tool you use, keep the product itself real and use AI for the background; our guide to AI vs real product photos explains why.

Tool notes. Many Shopify apps edit images inside the admin, which is convenient; Photoroom and Canva are popular outside it. AiArter (ours) is a web app for listing sets: white or brand-color backgrounds (4 credits), lifestyle scenes that keep your product as shot (8 credits), a Shopify 2048×2048 size and social sizes through the image extender (8 credits), up to 50 photos per batch. It has no Shopify integration, so you download a ZIP and upload the images yourself; if you want everything inside the admin, an app or Shopify's own editor will suit you better.

Make a matching set of Shopify product images, with the same background and framing across your catalog and each product kept exactly as shot.

Can AI write Shopify product descriptions?

Yes. Shopify's built-in generator drafts descriptions from a title and keywords, and recent versions draw on your existing descriptions to match your tone. It's a good starting point, not final copy.

  1. Add the key facts as keywords: material, size, use, who it's for, care.
  2. Generate, then pick a tone that matches the rest of your store.
  3. Rewrite the first sentence so it says what the product is and the main benefit.
  4. Check every fact and remove claims you can't support.
  5. Add a meta description and image alt text while you're there.

If you want a structure to follow, our Shopify product description template has one. AiArter's product description generator (ours) also has a Shopify mode that opens with the main benefit and writes only from facts you give it, which helps if you sell on several channels.

Can AI write Shopify marketing emails?

Yes. Sidekick can draft email text and subject lines from your store's details, and Shopify has offered AI writing help inside Shopify Email; check what your admin shows. For most small stores sending newsletters and launches, that's enough. Dedicated email platforms that integrate with Shopify, such as Klaviyo, add AI features alongside deeper segmentation and automated flows; check current pricing, which usually scales with your contact list.

  • Use AI for first drafts and subject-line variations, then pick and edit.
  • Keep discount codes, dates and prices exact; AI can mix them up.
  • Send a test to yourself and check it on a phone.
  • Follow consent rules for marketing email in your customers' countries.

Can AI answer Shopify customer chat?

For common questions, yes. Shopify Inbox suggests replies based on your store's information (in English, on by default for eligible merchants), which you can send as is or edit; that covers shipping times, returns and stock questions. Sidekick itself doesn't talk to your customers; it works in your admin.

Support apps with AI agents can answer customers without you, pull order status and hand off to a human. They're worth it at higher message volumes. Before you switch one on:

  • Load it with your real policies, and test it with tricky questions about refunds and delays.
  • Make sure it hands off to a person and never invents policies, discounts or delivery dates.
  • Tell customers when they're talking to AI where your local rules require it.

How do you choose Shopify AI apps safely?

Install fewer apps and vet each one. The Shopify App Store has many AI apps, and they vary widely in quality, pricing and how they treat your data.

Before you install any AI app

Check what the app asks permission to access (orders and customer data are sensitive), read recent reviews and the developer's replies, understand the pricing model (per seat, per credit, per order or a share of ad spend), and test your store's speed before and after. When you uninstall, check that leftover code or theme snippets were removed too.

  1. Check the built-in feature first. Sidekick and Shopify's AI tools may already do it.
  2. Read the permissions on the install screen. Decline apps that ask for more than they need.
  3. Look at recent reviews, not just the star rating.
  4. Read the pricing page for usage limits and overage charges.
  5. Test on a few products before running it across your catalog.
  6. Review your app list every quarter and remove what you don't use.
