Midjourney vs ChatGPT for product photos: ChatGPT is the better pick for editing a photo of your real product, because you can upload it, chat through changes and select one area to edit. Midjourney is better for styled concept shots and ad backgrounds. Both redraw the product, so labels can change. Midjourney starts at $10/month; ChatGPT Plus is $20/month.
Full disclosure: AiArter is our product, and neither Midjourney nor ChatGPT is ours. We compare the two fairly first and mention AiArter once, where it fits. Plan details come from OpenAI's and Midjourney's own pages, checked in October 2026. Prices and limits change often, so check current pricing before you subscribe.
- Editing your own photo: ChatGPT. Upload the photo, describe the change, or use the Select tool to change one area.
- Mood, style and ad concepts: Midjourney. Its Editor and Edit Model work with uploaded images too, but its strength is the look of the picture.
- Accuracy: both generate a new image, so label text, logos and proportions can drift. Check every result against the real product.
- Price: Midjourney Basic is $10/month ($8 billed yearly) with 3.3 Fast GPU hours. ChatGPT Go is $8/month and Plus $20/month, with image use counted against plan limits.
- Marketplace main images need the real product on pure white, which neither tool is built to guarantee.

Can ChatGPT edit a photo of my product?
Yes. OpenAI's help center says you can upload an existing image and describe the change, or select part of it with the Select tool and describe what should change there. That's useful for product photos: “put this bottle on a marble counter”, then “make the light warmer”, then “remove the plant on the left”.
Two cautions from OpenAI's own notes: selections aren't pixel-exact, and edits can spread beyond the area you picked. And because ChatGPT generates a new image, a busy label can come back with changed words. Our step-by-step guide to ChatGPT product photos covers prompts that reduce drift.
- Strong: plain-language edits, fixing one thing at a time, adding text for a social graphic.
- Weak: keeping dense label text and exact brand colors identical to the original.
Is Midjourney good for product photography?
Midjourney is good at the look of a product shot: lighting, surfaces, color grading and composition. Its current model family is V8, and its Edit Model can change an image from written instructions using up to 4 reference images. In the web Editor you can upload a photo, use Erase or Smart Select on part of it, and have Midjourney regenerate only that area. Layers let you add another image and generate around it.
Where it struggles is fidelity. Every image is generated, so small text turns into nonsense and logos shift, even with your photo as a reference. Our Midjourney product photography prompts guide explains the parameters and how to keep the result closer to your item.
- Strong: hero banners, mood boards, ad backgrounds, seasonal campaign looks.
- Weak: exact labels, exact counts in multi-packs, marketplace main images.
Which keeps the real product more accurate?
Neither guarantees it. Both build a new picture that resembles your product. In practice the risk depends on the product: a plain wooden bowl survives a redraw well, while a supplement bottle with fine print, a patterned fabric or an exact brand color is likely to change somewhere.
| Product type | Risk with either tool | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| No text, simple shape (mug, bowl, candle) | Low | Generate, then compare colors |
| Bold logo, little text | Medium | Check the logo at full size |
| Dense label, fine print, nutrition panel | High | Composite your real photo into the scene |
| Exact brand color or pattern | High | Keep the product pixels from your own photo |
Marketplaces expect photos to show what the buyer receives. A redrawn label that reads differently can mean returns or a rejected listing, so treat generated product images as secondary or social images unless you've checked them closely. See Amazon's image requirements for the main-image rules.
Is there a way to get AI scenes without redrawing the product?
Yes: cut the real product out of your photo and generate only the background. That's how AiArter (our product) works. Its AI background generator makes a lifestyle scene for 8 credits, and a pure white 2000×2000 Amazon main image costs 4 credits. The product pixels come from your photo, so the label can't be misspelled. The trade-off: it won't restyle the product itself or invent creative concepts the way Midjourney can, and it has no mobile app or API.
Upload a product photo with a busy label and get a lifestyle scene where the label stays exactly as shot.

They charge differently. Midjourney sells GPU time; Midjourney's docs say one image prompt usually takes about a minute of Fast time. ChatGPT counts image creation against your plan's general usage limits rather than a fixed image count.
| Plan | Price | What you get | Rough cost per image prompt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midjourney Basic | $10/mo ($96/yr) | 3.3 Fast GPU hours | About 5 cents (about 200 prompts) |
| Midjourney Standard | $30/mo ($288/yr) | 15 Fast hours plus unlimited Relax | Under 4 cents; Relax is unmetered |
| Midjourney Pro | $60/mo ($576/yr) | 30 Fast hours plus unlimited Relax | Varies with use |
| ChatGPT Go | $8/mo | Extended image generation | Not priced per image |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | More image creation than Go | Not priced per image |
| ChatGPT Pro | From $100/mo | Unlimited, faster image creation | Not priced per image |
| AiArter Starter (ours) | $12/mo | 1,000 credits | 4.8 cents white; 9.6 cents scene |
Midjourney's extra Fast hours cost $4 an hour, and unused monthly Fast time doesn't roll over. OpenAI's pages disagree on how much image generation the Free plan includes, so check current limits if you plan to stay free. For the bigger picture, see how much product photography costs.
Open every generated product image at 100% and read the label word by word. Check the cap, stitching, edges and color against the real item. Most AI product photo problems are visible only up close.
How to choose between Midjourney and ChatGPT
- Name the output. A listing photo of the real product, or a creative ad visual.
- Check the label. Dense text means you should keep your real product pixels.
- Pick ChatGPT if you want to talk through edits on your own photo.
- Pick Midjourney if you want a strong visual style for banners and campaigns.
- Run the same photo through both with the same request and compare at full size.
- Check commercial terms, including Midjourney's rule that companies above $1 million in yearly revenue need Pro or Mega.

Frequently asked questions
Is Midjourney or ChatGPT better for product photos?
ChatGPT is better for editing a photo of your real product, because you can upload it, chat through changes and select one area to edit. Midjourney is better for styled concept images and ad backgrounds. Neither guarantees that label text stays exact.
Can Midjourney use my product photo?
Yes. You can attach up to four reference images for its Edit Model, or upload a photo to the web Editor and regenerate selected areas. The product is still redrawn, so check labels, logos and proportions against the real item.
Does ChatGPT change my product's label?
It can. ChatGPT generates a new image, so text and logos sometimes come back misspelled or reshaped, especially on busy labels. Asking it to keep the label exactly helps but isn't a guarantee.
How much does Midjourney cost?
Midjourney lists Basic at $10 a month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120, with 20% off when billed yearly. Basic includes 3.3 Fast GPU hours; Standard and above add unlimited Relax time.
How much does ChatGPT cost for image generation?
ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, Plus $20 and Pro starts at $100. Image creation counts against each plan's usage limits rather than a fixed number of images, and the Free plan's image limits are small and can change.
Can I use AI-generated product photos on Amazon?
Amazon expects the main image to show the actual product on a pure white background. Generated images that redraw the product are safer as secondary or lifestyle images, and only if they match the real item.
Upload a phone photo and get white, colored or lifestyle backgrounds with the label, shape and colors left exactly as you shot them.
