How to Photograph Shoes for Selling Online: Angles, Prep and Backgrounds

To photograph shoes for selling online, clean and stuff them, light them with one soft window or panel, and shoot six standard angles at shoe height with the 2x lens: outer side profile, pair at 3/4, top-down, sole, heel and a close-up detail. Use a pure white background for the main image at 2000×2000 px or larger.

Shoe buyers compare listings side by side, and they want the same views every time: what the shoe looks like from the side, how the toe is shaped, what the sole looks like and how worn it is. If you sell new pairs in a store or resell used sneakers on eBay, Poshmark or Depop, a consistent set of angles answers most questions before they are asked. This guide covers prep, light, the standard angle set, condition shots for resale and when to use white backgrounds or scenes.

The short version
  • Shoot the same six angles for every pair so your listings look consistent and buyers can compare.
  • Stuff the shoes with tissue or shoe trees so they hold their shape; empty shoes collapse at the toe and ankle.
  • Get the camera down to shoe height. Shooting from standing height makes shoes look short and distorted.
  • For used shoes, show the flaws. Clear photos of sole wear, creases and scuffs reduce disputes and returns.
  • White background for the main image, scenes or on-foot shots as secondary images.

How do you prepare shoes before photographing them?

Clean them, remove or neaten the laces, stuff them so they hold their shape, and take out anything that shouldn't appear in the photo.

  1. Clean the uppers and midsoles. A damp microfiber cloth for leather and synthetics, a soft brush for suede, and a magic eraser for white rubber midsoles. Clean soles too; buyers look at them.
  2. Stuff the shoes with white tissue paper or shoe trees, firmly enough that the toe box is smooth and the heel stands up. Keep the stuffing out of sight.
  3. Lace them neatly and evenly, tucking loose ends inside, or tie a small, symmetrical bow. For boots, zip them and straighten the shaft.
  4. Remove price stickers and tags unless you are showing that a new pair is unworn with tags attached.
  5. Lint-roll fabric and knit uppers and check for dust at 100% zoom on a test shot.

How should you light shoes for product photos?

One large soft light from the side, a white board opposite and no mixed room lighting.

A window with indirect daylight, or an LED panel behind a diffuser, set 45° to the side and slightly in front of the shoe gives shape without harsh shadows. A white foam board on the other side fills in the shadow side. Patent leather and glossy sneakers reflect the light source, so move it further to the side and use white boards around the shoe; our guide to photographing reflective products explains how. Turn off overhead bulbs so white sneakers don't pick up a yellow cast.

What angles should you use to photograph shoes for selling online?

Use a fixed set of six angles: outer side profile, pair at 3/4, top-down, sole, heel and detail. Add an inner side and on-foot shot if you have room.

AngleHow to shoot itWhat it shows
Outer side profileSingle shoe, toe pointing left, camera level with the middle of the shoe.Silhouette, heel height, logo and design.
Pair at 3/4Both shoes, front shoe angled about 45°, back shoe slightly behind.Toe shape, depth and how the pair looks together.
Top-downCamera directly above, both shoes side by side.Lacing, toe box, width and insole branding.
SoleShoe on its side or held up, camera square to the outsole.Tread pattern, wear and size stamp.
HeelCamera level, shooting the back of the pair.Heel counter, heel tab, symmetry and heel wear.
DetailClose-up with the 2x lens or macro.Stitching, material, logo, special features.
Inner side (optional)Single shoe, toe pointing right.Inner design and any wear on the inside.
On foot (optional)Worn, cropped at the ankle or calf.Fit, scale and styling.
Shoot at shoe height, not standing height

Put the shoes on a table and lower the phone until the lens is level with the middle of the shoe for profile and heel shots. Use the 2x lens from about 60–100 cm. Shooting close with the wide lens from above makes toes look huge and heels look tiny, which leads to "looks different in person" complaints.

For Amazon, seller guides consistently describe the footwear main image as a single shoe, facing left, at about a 45-degree angle, on pure white. Confirm the current footwear style guide in Seller Central before you shoot a full catalog, and see our Amazon product image requirements guide for the general rules.

Amazon footwear and eBay photo rules were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

How do you photograph used shoes for resale?

Show the six standard angles plus close-ups of every flaw, the size tag and the insole, in daylight and without filters.

Resale buyers on eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Vinted and Grailed want to know exactly what they are getting. Honest condition photos protect you in a "not as described" dispute. eBay allows up to 24 photos in most categories (it has been testing a higher limit), so use the space.

  • Sole wear: a straight-on shot of each outsole, especially the heel and toe where tread wears first.
  • Creasing: a close-up of the toe box at a low angle with side light, which shows creases clearly.
  • Scuffs, stains and yellowing: one close-up per flaw, with a finger or coin pointing to it if it is small.
  • Size tag: the label inside the tongue or shaft, sharp enough to read the size and style code.
  • Insoles and lining: heel drag and worn insoles matter to buyers.
  • Box and extras: if the original box, spare laces or dust bags are included, show them in one group shot.

Don't edit flaws away or use beauty filters. You can clean the background, but the shoe itself should look exactly as it does in hand. Photo size and count rules for resale apps are in our guide to Poshmark and Depop photo size, and a free marketplace image resizer sets each photo to the exact size a site wants without cropping off the toe or heel.

Should shoe photos have a white background or a scene?

Use a pure white background for the main image and catalog grids, and a scene or on-foot shot for one or two secondary images.

BackgroundBest forWatch out for
Pure whiteMarketplace main images, store grids, comparing colors.White sneakers need a soft shadow so they don't disappear.
Light grey or beigeResale listings and white shoes.Keep the same shade across your listings.
Concrete, wood or streetSneakers, boots and casual styles.Busy textures distract from the shoe.
Outdoor trail or grassHiking and running shoes.Mud that suggests the shoes are used.
On footFit, scale and styling.Clothing that clashes or hides the shoe.

Getting a clean white sweep in-camera is hard with shoes because the sole sits right on the surface. A practical approach is to shoot on any plain surface with good light, then cut the shoe out and replace the background with white and add a soft shadow afterwards. White sneakers on white are their own problem; see how to photograph white products on a white background.

Shot your pair on the floor or a table? Turn it into a pure white main image with a soft shadow, then try the same shoes on a wooden floor or outdoors, kept exactly as you photographed them.

On AiArter, a white-background image costs 4 credits and a lifestyle scene such as Outdoors or Living room costs 8. The shoe is cut out of your photo and kept as-is, so colors, logos, creases and wear stay true, which matters for resale. If you list many pairs, the bulk background remover handles up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download. Laces and fine mesh are the hardest edges for any background removal, so check those at full size.

What camera settings work best for shoe photos?

Use the 2x lens, lock focus on the side logo or the toe, keep the flash off and use a tripod with a timer.

  • Lens and distance: 2x lens from 60–100 cm for full shoes; macro or 2x close up for details.
  • Focus: press and hold on the part closest to the camera, usually the toe in a 3/4 shot, so the front is sharp.
  • Exposure: lower slightly for white sneakers so the white panels keep their texture.
  • Consistency: mark the shoe and tripod positions on the table with tape so every pair is framed the same way.
  • Resolution: shoot at full resolution and crop later, rather than using digital zoom.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best angle to photograph shoes?

The outer side profile with the toe pointing left is the most common main angle, and a pair at 3/4 is the most popular secondary view. A complete listing also shows top-down, sole, heel and a detail shot.

How do you photograph shoes for eBay?

Shoot in daylight against a plain background, cover all six standard angles, then add close-ups of the size tag, sole wear and every flaw. eBay allows up to 24 photos, so you have room for condition shots.

What do you stuff shoes with for photos?

White tissue paper or shoe trees. Stuff firmly so the toe box is smooth and the heel stands upright, and keep the stuffing hidden inside the shoe.

Should I photograph one shoe or both?

Both. A single shoe works for the side profile and Amazon-style main images, while the pair shows how they look together in 3/4, top-down and heel shots.

How do you photograph white sneakers?

Light them from the side with a white card for fill, lower exposure slightly so the white keeps its texture, and shoot on light grey or add a soft shadow on white so the shoe has visible edges.

Do I need a white background for shoe photos?

For marketplace main images, usually yes. For resale apps and secondary images, any clean, plain background works, as long as you use the same one across your listings.
