Type the rate that applies to your product. Presets are examples only and are checked against official pages.

The starting numbers are only an example. US sales tax isn’t one rate: it depends on the state, county and city, and in many states marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy and eBay collect it for you under marketplace facilitator rules. Check your state’s revenue department or your tax adviser for the rate and rules that apply to you. Currency changes the symbol only.

How it’s calculated
  • The rate r is your percentage ÷ 100. 20% is 0.2.
  • Adding tax: tax = net × r and gross = net × (1 + r). 100 at 20% is 20 tax, 120 gross.
  • Removing tax: net = gross ÷ (1 + r) and tax = gross − net. 120 at 20% is 100 net, 20 tax.
  • Tax as a share of the gross price is r ÷ (1 + r). At 20% that’s 16.67%, which is why taking 20% off a gross price gives the wrong net.
  • Amounts are rounded to the cent on each line, and list totals add up the rounded lines. Your invoicing or accounting system may round on the total instead, so totals can differ by a cent.

FAQ

Questions about vat calculator

Is the VAT calculator free?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up.
Are my prices saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Your prices never leave your device.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so the VAT is £20. Taking 20% off £120 gives £96, which is wrong, because the tax was 20% of the net price, not of the gross.
Which rate should I use?
The one that applies to your product where you sell it. Many countries have a standard rate and lower rates for some goods. The example presets were checked in October 2026: GOV.UK lists a 20% standard and 5% reduced UK rate, § 12 of the German VAT Act sets 19% and 7%, and the Canada Revenue Agency lists 5% GST and 13% HST in Ontario. Rates change, so check the official source or a tax adviser.
Does it work for US sales tax?
It does the arithmetic for any rate you enter, but US sales tax isn't one rate. It depends on the state, county and city, and in many states marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy and eBay collect and pay it for you under marketplace facilitator rules. Check your state's revenue department for the rate and rules that apply to you.
Why is my total a cent different from my invoice?
The calculator rounds tax to the cent on each line and adds up the rounded lines. Some invoicing systems round on the total instead, which can change the last cent.
Is this tax advice?
No. It does the arithmetic for the rate you enter. Whether you need to charge tax, and at which rate, depends on where you and your customers are.
