Product Color Variant Photos: Platform Rules, Shooting Tips and AI

Every color variant needs its own image showing that exact color: Amazon, Google Shopping, Shopify and Etsy all link a photo to each variant. The reliable way is to photograph each color in the same setup. AI recoloring can fill gaps only if you check it against a real sample, because a slightly wrong color leads to returns.

More on this topic: Product photography, every guide in one place.

This guide covers how each platform attaches images to variants (checked October 2026), a fast way to shoot a color range so the set matches, when recoloring a photo with AI is reasonable and when it isn't, and how to keep the colors true. Our AI product photos keep each real variant as photographed and only change the background, which is the safe half of the job.

The short version
  • One image per color, linked to that variant, is what every major platform expects.
  • Shoot the range in one session with the same light, angle and camera settings, then process the batch together.
  • AI recolor is a shortcut, not a substitute. Use it only where you can compare the result with the real item, and never for a color you can't ship.
  • Check color in daylight against the product, and use the same white balance for every shot.
  • Name files by SKU and color so the right image lands on the right variant.

How do platforms show color variant images?

PlatformHow variant images work
AmazonEach color is its own child listing with its own main image showing only that color; sellers upload images to each child, plus swatch images where the category uses them.
ShopifyYou can add one image to each variant, chosen from the product's media. Variants don't take video or 3D. Group extra photos for an option in the media gallery.
EtsyLink photos to variations from the photos already on the listing, for up to 20 options, so choosing a color shows its photo.
Google Merchant CenterVariants share an item group ID and differ by color. Each needs its own image showing the exact color; giving different colors the same image is flagged.

Amazon, Shopify, Etsy and Google Merchant Center variant image rules were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.

How do I photograph a range of colors quickly?

  1. Fix the setup: tripod or phone stand, the same spot, the same window or lamp. Mark where the product sits with tape.
  2. Lock exposure and white balance if your camera app allows it, so one color doesn't shift the others.
  3. Shoot a gray or white card in the first frame as a reference for color correction.
  4. Swap colors without moving anything else: same angle, same distance, same props.
  5. Shoot the same set of angles for every color, at least front and one detail.
  6. Process the batch together. Cut them all out at once and place them on the same background, so the only difference between images is the product's color.

Upload every color at once and get matching main images: the real product on pure white, centered at the same fill. Up to 50 photos per batch.

Can I use AI to change a product's color?

Technically yes. You can describe the change ("make the mug sage green") in an AI image editor. But a prompt edit redraws the image, so the shade and finish come from the model, not your product. Treat it as a draft:

Why accuracy matters more than speed

Shoppers return items that look different from the pictures. Consumer surveys in the UK have found that more than one in ten online shoppers had returned something for exactly that reason. A color that's "close enough" in a photo can cost more in returns than the photoshoot would have.

How do I keep colors accurate across variants?

  • Same white balance for every shot. Mixed daylight and warm bulbs tint each photo differently. Our guide to fixing white balance walks through corrections.
  • Compare on screen and in hand: hold the product next to your monitor in daylight and adjust until they match.
  • Check the hex code of a flat area with the free color picker to keep the same color consistent across photos, ads and your site.
  • Export in sRGB, which is what browsers and marketplaces expect.
  • Use the real color name in the variant title, and the same name on every channel.

Our longer guide on product photo color accuracy covers lighting and calibration in more depth.

Where AiArter fits

  • Matching main images: the white background tool cuts each real variant out and places it on pure white at the same fill, 4 credits each.
  • Matching scenes: put every color in the same lifestyle scene, so the color is the only thing that changes. The product's pixels are kept, so its color stays as photographed.
  • Prompt edits (8 credits) for drafts and small fixes, checked against the real product before they go on a listing.

How should I name and organize variant images?

Most variant mix-ups happen in the upload, not the photoshoot. A naming system keeps the right image on the right variant across every channel:

ItemConventionExample
File nameSKU, color, shot numberMUG-12OZ-SAGE-01.jpg
Main imageShot 01 of each color is the white-background mainMUG-12OZ-SAGE-01
Extra anglesShots 02 onward, same order for every colorMUG-12OZ-SAGE-02 (side)
SwatchA small, flat crop of the material, where the platform uses swatchesMUG-12OZ-SAGE-SW.jpg
FolderOne folder per product, one subfolder per color/MUG-12OZ/SAGE/

Use the same color name in the file, the variant option and the listing title. If the factory calls it "#7" and your store calls it "Sage", keep a small lookup table so the mapping never depends on memory.

Swatches and thumbnails

Some platforms and themes show small color swatches next to the variant selector. A swatch should be cut from the real photo of that color, not a flat color fill picked by eye, so the dot and the photo agree. Google Shopping accepts a swatch link as an extra, but it never replaces the variant's main image.

When a new color launches

  1. Shoot the new color in the same marked spot with the same light and settings as the originals.
  2. Run it through the same background and size settings as the rest of the range.
  3. Check it side by side with an existing color at full size before uploading.
  4. Add it to every channel on the same day, so a shopper never sees the new color without its photo.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate photo for each color?

Yes. Amazon, Shopify, Etsy and Google Shopping all expect an image showing the exact color for each variant. Google flags color variants that share the same image.

How many images can a Shopify variant have?

One. Shopify lets you assign one image to each variant from the product's media. Add more photos of that color to the product's media gallery.

Can I show color variants with AI instead of photographing them?

Only as a draft you check against the real product. AI recoloring redraws the image and can change the shade, texture and pattern. Never use it for a color you don't have a sample of.

How do I make all my variant photos match?

Shoot every color in one session with the same light, angle and camera settings, then cut them out and place them on the same background at the same size.

Why do my product colors look different online?

Mixed light, automatic white balance, screen differences and non-sRGB exports all shift color. Lock white balance, use one light source and export in sRGB.
