How to Change the Background of a Photo (2026): Phone, Canva, Photoshop and AI

How to change the background of a photo: cut out the subject, then place it on a new background. Phones (iPhone, Samsung) do the cut-out free in seconds; Canva or Photoshop take about two minutes; or describe the new background in an AI editor. Match the light direction, add a shadow, and keep the perspective the same.

There are two ways to do it, and they suit different jobs. The first is cut-out and replace: remove the old background, then drop in a color, a gradient or another photo. The second is AI prompt replacement: you type what you want ("on a marble counter in morning light") and the AI repaints everything around the subject. This guide covers both, step by step, with free options first, then the details that make a swapped background look real rather than pasted on.

The short version
  • Two methods: cut out and replace (exact, predictable) or describe a new background with AI (fast, creative, less control).
  • Free options: iPhone and Samsung phones can cut out a subject from the Photos or Gallery app; paste it into any editor to add a new background.
  • Canva and Photoshop: both have one-click background removal, but on paid plans (Canva Pro and above; a Photoshop subscription).
  • Realism comes from three things: light from the same direction, a soft shadow under the subject, and a matching camera angle.
  • For products: pure white for marketplace main images, a brand color for your store and ads, a lifestyle scene for secondary photos and social posts.

Which method should you use to change a photo background?

Use cut-out and replace when the result must be exact, and AI prompt replacement when you want a new scene quickly and can accept small changes. The table sums up the trade-offs.

How to change the background of a photo on your phone

Recent iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones can lift the subject out of a photo for free; you then paste it onto a new background in another app.

iPhone

  1. Open the photo in the Photos app.
  2. Touch and hold the subject until a glowing outline appears, then tap Copy (or Share to save it as a sticker or file).
  3. Alternatively, in the Files app, touch and hold an image and choose Quick Actions > Remove Background to save a transparent PNG next to the original.
  4. Open an editor that supports layers (Canva, Adobe Express, Picsart and similar apps all do), add your new background image or color, and paste the cut-out on top.
  5. Resize the subject, place it on the "floor" of the new scene, and export.

For a full walkthrough, see our guide on removing a background from a photo on iPhone.

Android

On Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI 5.1 or later, open the photo in Gallery and touch and hold the subject to cut it out, then copy or save it. On other Android phones, Google Photos offers AI editing tools on supported devices, but availability varies by phone and country, so a free app such as Adobe Express is the reliable route. Menu names change between versions, so look for "cut out", "remove background" or "copy subject".

How to change a photo background in Canva

Canva removes the background with one click and lets you put any color, gradient or photo behind the subject, but BG Remover is only on paid plans (Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits).

  1. Create a design at the size you need and upload your photo.
  2. Select the photo and choose BG Remover from the toolbar (on some versions it sits under Edit or Edit image).
  3. Use the Erase and Restore brushes to fix any edges the tool missed.
  4. Click an empty part of the page and pick a background color, or add a photo and move it behind the subject with Position > Backward.
  5. Add a soft shadow (the Shadows effect on the photo) and download as PNG or JPG.

How to change a photo background in Photoshop

Photoshop gives you the most control: an automatic subject mask that you can refine edge by edge, and generative tools that can paint a new scene.

  1. Open the photo and unlock the layer (click the lock icon in the Layers panel).
  2. Click Remove background in the Contextual Task Bar, or use Select > Subject and add a layer mask. Photoshop hides the background with a mask, so nothing is lost.
  3. Refine hair and soft edges with Select and Mask.
  4. Drag a new background photo into the document, place it below the subject layer, or fill a new layer with a solid color.
  5. To generate a scene instead, select the empty area and use Generative Fill with a short prompt.
  6. Add a shadow on a new layer between subject and background, then export.

How to change the background with an AI prompt

AI editors let you type the change you want in plain words, which is the fastest way to get a whole new scene from one photo.

In AiArter's AI image editor you upload a photo and write something like "replace the background with a sunny beach" or "put this on a white kitchen counter" (8 credits per result). Prompt editors repaint the area around the subject, and occasionally they nudge small details of the subject too, such as text on a label. That's fine for a social post of a person or a pet. For product photos, where the label has to stay exactly right, use a tool that cuts the product out and keeps its pixels untouched, such as our AI background generator, which builds a new scene around the real product.

Good prompts for background changes
  • Say what to keep: "keep the person exactly as they are, change only the background".
  • Name the surface and the light: "on a light oak table, soft window light from the left".
  • Keep it short. One scene, one light source, one mood.

How do you make a new background look real?

A swapped background looks real when the light, shadow and camera angle of the subject match the new scene. Most fake-looking composites break one of these rules.

EdgesWhite fringe or halo around the subjectRefine the edge, or shrink the mask by 1–2 px

Shadows do more than anything else. Our guide on adding a shadow to a product photo shows the three shadow types and when to use each.

Which background should you use for product photos?

Use pure white for marketplace main images, a brand color for your own store and ads, and a lifestyle scene for secondary photos and social posts.

  • Pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255). Required for the main image on Amazon and expected on Walmart and Google Shopping. See how to make a product photo background white.
  • Brand color or gradient. Makes a store grid and ad set look like one family. Pick one or two colors and use them on every product.
  • Lifestyle scene. Shows the product in use, on a counter, a shelf or outdoors. Our list of lifestyle product photography ideas has scene ideas by category.
  • Transparent PNG. When a designer or a template will add the background later.

Changing product photo backgrounds with AiArter

AiArter's product photo tools cut the product out of your photo and keep it as it is, so labels, colors and shape stay true; only the background changes.

  • Brand color or gradient (4 credits): presets such as Warm beige, Light grey, Sage, Sky and Charcoal, or your own colors as one-click swatches from a brand kit.
  • Lifestyle scene (8 credits): ten presets including Marble counter, Wooden table, Outdoors, Bathroom shelf and Dark luxury, or describe your own scene.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the background of a photo for free?

On an iPhone, touch and hold the subject in the Photos app and copy it; on a Samsung Galaxy, do the same in Gallery. Paste the cut-out into a free editor such as Adobe Express or Canva's free plan and place it over a new color or photo. Edges on hair and fine detail may need touching up.

Can I change the background of a photo in Canva for free?

Not with BG Remover, which is a paid feature on Canva Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits plans. You can remove the background elsewhere for free, then upload the transparent PNG to Canva and design the new background on the free plan.

How do I change a photo background to white?

Remove the background, then place the subject on a pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) canvas and add a soft shadow underneath. For product photos, check the corners with an eyedropper tool: they should read exactly 255, 255, 255.

Why does my new background look fake?

Usually because the light comes from a different direction, the subject has no shadow, or the camera angle doesn't match the scene. Fix the shadow first, then match light direction and color temperature.

Can AI change the background without changing the subject?

Tools that cut the subject out and composite it keep it pixel for pixel. Prompt-based editors repaint around the subject and can alter small details, so check text and logos before you use the result.

What is the best background for product photos?

Pure white for marketplace main images, because most marketplaces require or prefer it. Brand colors and lifestyle scenes work better for your own store, social posts and ads.
