Luminance weighs green most and blue least, close to how bright each color looks to the eye. Average treats all three the same. The preview is a smaller copy so the sliders stay fast. Downloads are converted at full size, and transparent PNGs stay transparent. Saving a new copy drops the photo's EXIF data.

FAQ

Questions about black and white photo

Is the converter free?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up, no credits and no watermark.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.
Which grayscale method should I use?
Luminance looks natural for most photos because it follows how bright each color looks to the eye. Average can look flat. The channel mixer lets you decide: more red lightens skin and warm products, more blue lightens skies and cool colors.
Is the result truly black and white?
Yes. In black and white mode every pixel gets the same red, green and blue value, so there is no color tint left. Sepia and duotone add color on purpose.
Does it lower the quality?
The photo keeps its full size. PNG saves every pixel exactly. JPG uses the quality you pick, 92 by default.
Can it add color to an old black and white photo?
No. This tool removes color. The AI photo restorer repairs scratches and fading in old photos and can bring back color. That tool uses credits.
