Pixel sizes are added to every photo as they are. Percent sizes are a share of each photo's shorter side, so the border looks the same on photos of different sizes. The photo itself keeps its pixels and isn't resized. Saving a new copy drops the photo's EXIF data.

FAQ

Questions about add border to image

Is the border tool free?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up, no credits and no watermark.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The border is drawn in your browser with the canvas API. Your photos never leave your device.
Does adding a border shrink my photo?
No. The border is added around the photo, so the photo keeps all its pixels and the file gets bigger. The tool shows the output size before you download.
Should I use pixels or percent?
Use pixels when every photo needs exactly the same border, for example 40 px. Use percent when your photos have different sizes and you want the border to look the same on each.
Why does my photo save as PNG?
Rounded corners and shadows with a transparent background need PNG, because JPG can't store transparency. Pick a color for the area outside the corners to save as JPG.
Can I add a border to my Amazon main image?
Amazon's main-image rules ask for a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame, so a colored border or frame isn't allowed there; check your marketplace's rules. Borders work well for social posts, your own store and secondary images.
