The best Instagram Shop product image size is 1024×1024 pixels (1:1) for catalog images, with 500×500 the minimum Meta accepts. For feed posts that tag products, use 1080×1350 (4:5) or 1080×1440 (3:4). For Stories and Reels, use 1080×1920 (9:16). Save catalog images as JPEG or PNG under 8 MB.
Instagram uses your product photos in two different ways, and that is where most of the confusion comes from. Your shop and product detail pages pull images from a product catalog in Meta Commerce Manager, while your posts, Stories and Reels are ordinary uploads that you tag products in. Each has its own best size. This guide covers both, plus the grid crop, safe zones and a checklist.
- Catalog images (shop and product pages): square 1:1, at least 500×500, 1024×1024 or larger recommended, JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB.
- Feed posts: 1080 pixels wide. 4:5 (1080×1350) takes the most screen space in the feed; 3:4 (1080×1440) matches the profile grid tile exactly.
- Stories and Reels: 9:16 at 1080×1920. Keep the product and any text away from the top and bottom edges, where the app's buttons sit.
- The profile grid now shows 3:4 tiles, so 4:5 posts lose a thin strip from each side and square posts lose more of their sides.
- Catalog photos should be clean: the real product, no promo text, prices, watermarks or coupon codes.
What size should Instagram Shop product images be?
For the images in your catalog, use a square image of at least 1024×1024 pixels. These are the photos shoppers see on your shop, on product detail pages and in product tags, and they also feed catalog-based ads on Facebook and Instagram.
Instagram doesn't host its own separate catalog. Products come from a catalog in Meta Commerce Manager, which you fill by hand, by a data feed or through a platform connection such as Shopify. Whatever image you set there is what Instagram shows. Here are the specs commonly published for Meta catalog images:
| Catalog image spec | Requirement | What to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum size | 500×500 px | Treat this as a floor, not a target |
| Recommended size | 1024×1024 px or larger | 2000×2000 px gives room for zoom and crops |
| Aspect ratio | Square 1:1 is the safe choice | Square, with the product centered |
| File format | JPEG or PNG | JPEG for photos, PNG if you need transparency elsewhere |
| File size | Up to 8 MB | Usually well under 2 MB at 2000×2000 |
| Additional images | Up to 20 per product (additional_image_link) | 4–6 angles and a lifestyle shot |
| Content | The actual product; no promo text, watermarks or placeholder images | Clean product photo |
Meta's catalog image specs and Instagram's post and Story sizes were checked in October 2026. Marketplaces change their rules, so confirm the current requirements in your seller dashboard before you upload a large batch.
Square works best because the same catalog image gets reused in many placements: the shop grid, carousel ads, collection ads and product tags. Meta may crop, pad or extend an image to fit each placement, and a centered square product survives all of them. Leave a small margin around the product so a slight crop never cuts off an edge. If a photo isn't square yet, our free square image maker pads it with white or a color instead of cropping the product. For tagged feed posts and Stories, the free Instagram image resizer makes 4:5 and 9:16 versions of the same photo in your browser.
In 2025 Meta moved US shops from in-app checkout to website checkout, so most shoppers now tap through to your own store to buy. Product tagging and catalogs still matter for discovery, but features vary by country and account. Check what's available to you in Commerce Manager before you plan a big catalog update.
Instagram product photo size for posts, Stories and Reels
Posts and Stories are separate uploads, so you size them for the screen, not the catalog. All of them should be 1080 pixels wide; only the height changes.
| Placement | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed post (portrait) | 4:5 | 1080×1350 | Most screen space in the feed; the usual default |
| Feed post (grid-friendly) | 3:4 | 1080×1440 | Matches the profile grid tile exactly |
| Feed post (square) | 1:1 | 1080×1080 | Fine, but smaller in the feed and cropped on the grid |
| Feed post (landscape) | 1.91:1 | 1080×566 | Rarely the right choice for products |
| Story | 9:16 | 1080×1920 | Keep key content out of the top and bottom edges |
| Reel cover and video | 9:16 | 1080×1920 | The grid shows a 3:4 crop of the cover |
| Carousel | Set by the first slide | Use one ratio for every slide | Mixed ratios get cropped to match |
If you upload a larger image, Instagram scales it down to 1080 pixels wide, so there's no gain in posting 4000-pixel files. Going smaller than 1080 wide is the bigger risk: the photo gets stretched and looks soft. If your only copy is small, run it through an AI image upscaler first.
4:5 or 3:4 for product posts?
Use 4:5 if the feed is where people see you most, and 3:4 if your profile grid acts as your shop window. Since early 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles instead of squares. A 4:5 image loses a thin strip from each side on the grid; a square image loses more of its left and right edges. Neither is a big problem if the product sits in the middle with some space around it, which is a good habit anyway.
How Instagram crops product photos in the grid
Instagram crops the grid preview to the center of your image, so anything near the edges can disappear. Tap a post and it opens at full size, but most people judge your shop from the grid first.
- Center the product. The grid crop is centered, so a centered product is never cut.
- Keep text in the middle. If you add a price or a short headline to a post, keep it inside the central 3:4 area.
- Leave margin. About 10% empty space on each side protects against every crop.
- Check the preview. After posting, look at your profile on a phone and fix any tile where the product is cut off. You can adjust the grid thumbnail for many post types.
Stories and Reels: where to keep the product
Keep the product and any text in the middle of a 9:16 frame. The profile name and progress bar cover the top of a Story, and the reply box, captions and action buttons cover the bottom. Meta's own ad guidance for Stories says to keep key elements out of roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% of the frame, which is a sensible rule for organic Stories too.
A product photo shot square doesn't fit a 9:16 frame on its own. You can place it on a plain or branded background, or extend the scene around it. Stretching or zooming until the product is cut off looks worse than either.
Turn one product photo into a 4:5 feed post and a 9:16 Story, with AI filling the extra space instead of stretching the photo.

Use clean, true-to-life photos for the catalog and save the styling for posts. Shoppers tap a product tag expecting to see exactly what they'll receive, so the catalog image should be accurate above all. Posts are where you show mood, scale and use.
| Where it appears | Best image type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog main image | Product on white or a light, plain background | Clear, consistent shop grid; fits every placement |
| Catalog extra images | Other angles, close-ups, scale, in-use shots | Answers questions before the click to your site |
| Feed posts | Lifestyle scenes, flat lays, styled shots | Looks like content rather than a catalog |
| Stories and Reels | Vertical scenes, short clips, behind the scenes | Fills the full screen |
A consistent background across your catalog makes your shop look organised. White is the easy default; a soft brand color can work too, as long as every product uses it. Our guide to the best background color for product photos compares the options, and our list of lifestyle product photography ideas has scene ideas for posts.

How to make Instagram-ready product images with AiArter
AiArter can produce the catalog image and the post sizes from one phone photo. The product is cut out of your photo and kept as it is, so labels and colors stay true.
- Catalog image (4 credits). The product on pure white, centered and filling about 85% of a 2000×2000 square, with an optional soft shadow. That comfortably clears Meta's recommended size.
- Brand color backgrounds (4 credits). Put every product on the same color or gradient for a consistent shop grid. Brand-kit colors show up as one-click swatches.
- Lifestyle scenes (8 credits) for posts: ten presets such as Marble counter, Wooden table and Living room, or describe your own. Only the background is generated.
- Channel sizes (8 credits). Instagram post at 1080×1350 (4:5) and Story, Reel or TikTok at 1080×1920 (9:16). AI fills the extra space instead of stretching.
- Whole catalogs. The bulk background remover handles up to 50 photos per batch with one ZIP download; failed photos aren't charged.
- Text posts. For sale announcements and price posts, drop your cut-out into a design template.
AiArter doesn't post to Instagram or sync with Commerce Manager. You download the images and upload them to your catalog or your store, which then syncs to Meta. If your catalog comes from Shopify, our Shopify product image size guide covers the store side, and the Facebook ad image size guide covers ads that use the same catalog.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for Instagram product photos?
Use 1080×1350 pixels (4:5) for feed posts and 1080×1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. For catalog images that appear on your shop and product pages, use a square image of at least 1024×1024 pixels.
What is the minimum image size for an Instagram Shop catalog?
Meta's catalog minimum is generally given as 500×500 pixels, with 1024×1024 or larger recommended. Smaller images can be rejected or look blurry, so 2000×2000 is a safe choice.
Should Instagram Shop photos be square?
Catalog images should be square, because the same image is reused in the shop, product tags and catalog ads, and a square crop fits all of them. Feed posts can be 4:5 or 3:4 instead to take up more of the screen.
Why does Instagram crop my product photos on my profile?
The profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 tile, cropped from the center. A 4:5 post loses a thin strip from each side, and a square post loses more of its sides. Keep the product centered with some space around it.
Can I put prices or text on Instagram Shop images?
Keep catalog images clean: no prices, sale text, coupon codes or watermarks, since Meta can reject them and prices are already shown from your catalog. Text is fine on ordinary feed posts and Stories.
Where do Instagram Shop product images come from?
From the product catalog in Meta Commerce Manager. You can add products by hand, upload a data feed or connect a platform such as Shopify, and the image set there is the one Instagram shows.
Upload a phone photo and get a clean square catalog image, a 4:5 feed post and a 9:16 Story, with your product kept exactly as it is.
